E. EVELEIGH—WAS A VERY PROMINENT AND HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN.” [Transcribed 4 June 2002 from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.] With the death of Robert E. EVELEIGH, Bloomfield loses one of its best and most highly esteemed citizens. His death, which was due to heart disease, occurred Monday afternoon, June 26, at 1:30 o’clock, following an illness of several weeks. Robert E. EVELEIGH was born in Bloomfield, Indiana, August 20, 1848, the son of Joseph W. and Joanna (SHAW) EVELEIGH, and was one of a family of five children. His father was a native of Ireland and his mother said to have been the first white female child born in Greene County. At the age of twenty years Joseph EVELEIGH left Ireland and after a brief residence in Montreal, Canada, went to Louisville, Kentucky where he followed the trade of saddler until his removal to this county a few years later. After working at his calling for a number of years he opened a tavern and possessing all the characteristics of the ideal host, his hotel soon became widely known and a popular stopping place during the forty years he was the proprietor. Disposing of his hotel interests he retired from active business and lived quietly in his home, the present Eveleigh home, until his death in 1898. The early life of R. E. EVELEIGH was spent in Bloomfield and after completing the course in public schools he entered Indiana University, from which institution he was graduated in 1869. On finishing his college course he was for six years employed as a drug clerk at different places during which time he became familiar with every detail of the business and earned an enviable reputation as a skillful pharmacist. In the meantime he took an active interest in political matters and soon became one of the leaders of the Republican part in this county. During GRANT’S administration he received the appointment at postmaster at Bloomfield, which position he held during that administration, discharging his duties of the office in a capable and satisfactory manner. While holding this office he purchased the drug store which he continued to manage until 1907, when he disposed of the business to retire from active life. For four years he served as township trustee of Richl! and Township, in which capacity he displayed the same efficiency as in his other undertakings and was regarded as one of the best trustees the township ever had. For a number of years he was secretary of the Bloomfield Building and Loan Association, an office he resigned during his last illness. On November 13, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma FREELAND, daughter of Dr. William FREELAND, of Bloomfield, who with their son Carl F. EVELEIGH, of Indianapolis survive. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Ann GREEVES and nephew Dr. Robert E. LYONS, of Bloomington. Mr. EVELEIGH was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church and for many years held the office of elder in the church at this place. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a charter member of the Phi Psi of Indiana University. No more appropriate tribute could be paid Mr. EVELEIGH than the following, which we quote from a biographical sketch: “Happy is the man who so shapes his life that he can take a retrospective view of the whole course and find therein no blemish of noble alms and high ideals, whose courage and manliness have always been above reproach, and who, at the close of a long and eminently successful career, retires from the active arena with the affection and respect of all who know him. Such as been the simple life story of the well known gentleman and public-spirited citizen whose name appears above, whose influence has ever been exerted on the side of right and who, as one of the noted men of his day and generation in Bloomfield is entitled to a conspicuous place among those who have give character and stability to the city and won for it honorable repartee.” The funeral services were conducted at the family residence Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock under the auspices of the Masonic lodge, and the sermon was preached by the Rev. M. E. PRATHER, of Columbus, formerly pastor of the Presbyterian church here. He was assisted in the service by the Rev. R. W. FISH, of the M. E. Church. Music was rendered by the choir of the Presbyterian Church. The pallbearers were Dr. H. R. ISENHOWER, F. L. BURKE, W. V. MOFFETT, Allen G. PATE, W. B. MADDOCK and Allen WILLIAMS. The remains were laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery beneath a profusion of beautiful floral offerings. Amount the out of town relatives and friends who were here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. R. EAST, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. HENDRICKS, of Indianapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Will COURSON, of Anderson; Mrs. Ann GREEVES, of Bloomington; Mrs. Mattie CARNAHAN, Mrs. Anna BROUILLETTE, of Worthington; Dr. E. T.
