Bloomington (IN) Telephone, Jan 10, 1919, p. 1. 2 TO 21 YEARS FOR MURDER Woman Who Killed Walter Foster, Former Resident The woman who killed Walter Foster, a former resident here but then of Linton, must serve a long term in prison. A dispatch from Bloomfield gives the following details of the trial: "After deliberating since 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, a jury in the Greene County Circuit Court here today returned a verdict of manslaughter in the case of Edith Lewis McCallester of Bloomfield who shot and killed Walter Foster of Linton on the night of October 15. The tragedy occurred about midnight, a mile west of Bloomfield, when the two were out for an automobile ride. Her plea was self-defense. "According to her story, Foster drew his revolved, gave her a certain length of time in which to live, and told her to write down her last wishes, which she did. While he was preparing a cigarette, she snatched the gun from his hand and shot him and then walked back to her father's home in Bloomfield. The defendant is 26 years old and Foster was 39. He left a widow and several children. The woman will receive sentence of 2 to 21 years in the woman's prison in Indianapolis."
