[Transcribed on December 12, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Barton W. S. ARMSTRONG, eighty-six years old, native of Jackson Township, near Owensburg, this county, and one of the outstanding stockmen of Montana, died at Great Falls, {Cascade County,} Montana, recently after several months' illness. He was born June 22, 1846, the son of Ari ARMSTRONG. At an early age he turned to farming and trading and carried on an extensive business as a shipper and dealer in mules and as a cattle feeder. In 1899 he left Indiana and went to Great Falls, where he purchased a sheep ranch comprising 5, 000 acres. Later he increased his holdings to 13,000 acres, acquiring two other ranches. Most of this property is now managed by three sons, Harry, Walter and Webb. Before going west he was married to Miss Candace GAINEY, of Bedford. Mrs. ARMSTRONG died in Great Falls in 1900. Mr. ARMSTRONG was known by officials of commission firms all through the East and Middle West and two years ago the official publication of one of the commission companies was dedicated to him. In addition to the sons mentioned, two others survive, Urmey ARMSTRONG, of Medford, Oregon, and Gayton ARMSTRONG, of Mahnomen, Minnesota. Mrs. W. J. HAMILTON, of Linton, is a niece, and Mrs. J. M. MCDOWELL, who formerly conducted the old Remington hotel at Linton, was a sister. - Link to an 1884 Biography of his father, Ari ARMSTRONG [1814IN-1905IN]: http://www.angelfire.com/in4/orchidhill/armstrong1.txt - Notes-RLJ: It would appear from Ari ARMSTRONG'S Biography, Barton was probably born in Lawrence County rather than Greene County, Indiana. The land patents which Ari received were all located in Lawrence county, i.e.: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Results.asp?QryId=83650.27 - Link to Land Patent for Barton W. S.
