It is said that McGill & McGill were the first men to open a store at, Jonesboro, but Ephraim Jackson and Charles D. Rader conducted stores in this portion of the county, beginning a few years before. The McGills began the business about the year 1839. Late in the same year, William Dorch opened a grocery there, wet and dry. About this time, John Gardner was fined before a Justice of the Peace for retailing liquor without a license.
