    1. [INGREENE] Obituary of Nancy (CORBIN) ASHCRAFT [1862IN-1933CO]
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RobertLJackson29 Surnames: ASHCRAFT, BALLARD, CORBIN Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/9834/mb.ashx Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, April 20, 1933,Volume LVII, Number 25, Page 2, Columns 7 & 8, "DEATH'S HARVEST-ASHCRAFT." [Transcribed November 30, 2007 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Mrs. Nannie (CORBIN) ASHCRAFT was born March 18, 1862 to Jesse and Delilah (JACKSON) CORBIN, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Glen E. BALLARD, in Denver, Colorado, April 2, 1933, aged seventy-one years and fifteen days. She was married to Albert ASHCRAFT November 24, 1883. To this union two children were born, a boy-Claud, dying in infancy. For several years after her marriage they lived on a farm near Robison, the husband being one of Jackson Township's best schoolteachers, taught school during the winter and was engaged in farming during the summer. They later left the farm, moving to Bedford, where Mr. ASHCRAFT engaged in the merchandise business until his death on November 19, 1904. Mrs. ASHCRAFT and daughter Aria, continued to live in Bedford and the daughter was a teacher in Bedford schools for several years. Her health giving away, she went to Colorado. Deriving much benefit by the change of climate, Mrs. ASHCRAFT sold her property in Bedford and went to Colorado that she might be with her daughter. Several months ago she was stricken with valvular heart trouble from which she never recovered. But the immediate cause of her death was possibly bronchial pneumonia. Mrs. ASHCRAFT united with the M. E. church in early life, but later affiliated herself with the Baptist church, remaining true to its teachings until death. She has many relatives and friends in the community where her childhood and youth was spent and in Bedford, who mourn her passing away. - Link to the Obituary of her mother, Delilah (JACKSON) CORBIN [1827KY-1891IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=2572 - Link to the Obituary of her father, Jesse CORBIN [1821KY-1894IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=2726 - Link to the Obituary of her paternal grandmother, Sarah Hannah (BIVENS) CORBIN [1796KY-1889IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=4864 - Link to the Obituary of her sister, Amanda CORBIN [1849IN-1933IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=3806 - Link to the Obituary of her sister, Lucretia (CORBIN) DOYLE [1857IN-1936IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=4319 - Link to the Obituary of her sister, Minerva (CORBIN) ASHCRAFT [1859IN-1940IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=5345 - Link to the Obituary of her sister, Martha Ellen (CORBIN) (ASHCRAFT) HORN [1869IN-1957IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=3824 - Link to the Obituary of her sister, Cathryn (CORBIN) BRUCE [1852IN-1936IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=4320 - Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [INGREENE] Obituary of Sarah E. (COX) RUSH [1856IN-1932IN]
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RobertLJackson29 Surnames: COX, GILLILAND, HENRY, JOHNSON, RAINBOLT, READ, RUSH Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/9833/mb.ashx Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, March 10, 1932,Volume LVI, Number 19, Page 8, Column 1, "DEATH'S HARVEST." [Transcribed on November 29, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] This community was shocked when Sarah E. RUSH passed away at her home in Solsberry, where she had lived for the past few months. She had been in poor health for some time but the end was not expected so soon. She was the oldest of the seven children born to Isaac and Louisa COX, born near Hobbieville, Indiana, Mary 4, 1856, and passed through the vale of death February 29, having reached the age of seventy-five years, nine months and twenty-six days. At an early age she became a member of the Hobbieville M. E. church of which she remained a loyal member. She was not only loyal to one church, but to all. She longed to see the time when all churches would be united. She was united in marriage to George RUSH October 14, 1883. To this happy union came five children to bless the home, which can truthfully be said they were a blessing in the home, administering to every want and need, always trying to make mother happy and make father's life brighter. Although an invalid for almost eleven years she was patient, never complaining, and put forth every effort to regain health. She could be designated by both young and old as a true wife, a most loving and cheerful month. Those who knew her loved her; even the little children enjoyed being in her presence. They brought sunshine to her by the coming. It can truly be said of her that she loved to serve, not only in her own home, but where help was needed. She was always happy when making the life of a neighbor or friend better and happier. She was one of God's noble women, which was proven by her daily life, not laying up treasures on earth but in heaven. She was preceded to the Great Beyond by an infant daughter and two brothers, Morton and James H. The remaining brothers are Millard, of Hobbieville, and Quince, of Bloomington; two sisters, Louella READ, of Bloomington, and Mrs. Emma RAINBOLT, of Bloomfield. She also leaves a kind and most devoted husband, two sons, Theodore, of Oolitic; Bert, of Owensburg, and two daughters, Minnie GILLILAND and Lula JOHNSON, of Solsberry; five grandsons and one granddaughter to mourn her passing. One little grandson, Robert, who made his home with her, and Russell, who made his home with Grandpa and Grandma HENRY, passed away about two years ago. This was a great loss in each home where they became rays of sunshine - AN APPRECIATION To the dear people of Solsberry and community, we want to give expression of our heartfelt thanks for the many kindnesses bestowed upon us during the illness and death of our wife and mother. [Transcribed on November 27, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Robert P. THOMPSON, one of Greene County's old and highly respected citizens, was born at Solsberry, Indiana, January 27, 1957, and died May 2, 1941, at the home of his son, Ernest THOMPSON, in Indianapolis, where he has made his home for the past 15 years, at the age of 84 years, three months and five days. In early life he united with the Congregational Church at Solsberry and throughout his long life his faith in that fellowship never wavered. He attended school at Bloomington, Indiana, where he prepared himself for the teaching profession which he followed for several years. He was later elected to the office of township trustee of Beech Creek Township, where he proved his ability to serve the public in any capacity to which he might be chosen. He spent almost one-third of a century in and around the court house, for the most part as deputy sheriff and deputy auditor in which positions he was unusually popular. He was a Republican in politics and served his party in the capacity of county chairman and also in other connections, yet he was never an offensive partisan and held the confidence and respect of all parties. Every position to which he was called was filled with credit to himself and with complete satisfaction to his employers. On January 3, 1879, he was united in marriage with Eliza Esther HANNUM to which union seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Those who survive in the order of their ages are Orland, of Topeka, Kansas; Irwin and Ernest, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Paul NOLIN and Mary THOMPSON, of Bloomington. He spent his life in service for the betterment of the community and to make a better place in which to live, the greatest contribution he ever made was giving to the county these many noble sons who have all been a success in life and the two worthy daughters who also won the esteem and confidence of all their acquaintances. He was a kind and affectionate father and never failed to express his love and devotion to his children for their never ending care for him, which was so given by all of them, especially by those in their homes. - NOTES: (1) INDEX TO MARRIAGE RECORDS IN GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA (Online), 1939, WPA, Page 53: Escie E. [Transcribed on November 27, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Oliver Morton CORBIN was born in Greene County, Indiana, April 5, 1864; died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edna BRITT, in Bedford, Indiana, May 5, 1941, aged 77 years and one month. Mr. CORBIN was one of 15 children born to Jesse and Delilah (JACKSON) CORBIN, who were pioneer citizens of Jackson Township, Greene County, Indiana and direct descendants of the lat Mr. and Mrs. James CORBIN, among the first settlers of Greene County, having come from the Blue Grass regions of Kentucky between the years of 1821 and 1825, during the covered wagon days. Oliver Morton was brought up under the influence and teachings of Christian parents, in the fear and admonition of the Lord, and early in life obeyed the Master's call and affiliated with the Baptist church and lived a Christian through his life. As a young man he was morally clean, and it could be truly said he had not one bad habit, was a true model for his friends and associates, and was a favorite among the young people of the community. He loved music and was a talented singer. During his long illness he found much pleasure in his Christian friends calling, and singing and praying with him. One of his favorite songs was "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and recently when the writer was at his bedside and by request sang this song, and when his sweet tenor voice, clear and full of inspiration, joined the singing, it seemed the "gates of heaven" swung ajar that the angelic choir might hear his voice. About the year 1885 he was married to Miss Eliza POTTS, a schoolteacher of Dubois County and one of the most beautiful Christian ladies, with whom it has been my privilege to be associated. To this happy union two children were born, Everett and Bertha. In a few months Jesus came and took little Bertha to be His own. The family circle was broken, but a new one established in a home not built by hands, which made the way more bright for those left to mourn. In a short time the mother followed little Bertha, which added another link to the circle, and in October, 1940, when Everett passed away the third link was added, and in the death of the father May 5, 1941, the circle was made complete, never to be broken. On October 11, 1895, Mr. CORBIN was again married to Miss Nellie LEMON, of Bedford. To this union six children were born, three passing away in infancy. Mr. CORBIN was an industrious man toiling early and late, in good and bad weather, for years hauling stone by wagon and team (later a more modern way) for building contractors. Many homes and business houses were built by his labor, and almost every man in Bedford knew him, and he was held in high esteem for his honesty and friendly greeting. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances, and his friends keenly feel their loss as a Bedford citizen. Mr. CORBIN had been confined to his home for more than a year, and everything that kind hearts and willing hands could do was to on avail. During his long illness he never murmured, nor did he utter a single unkind word. Truly his children can rise up and call him blessed, and his many friends say, "This was a man." What a wonderful world this would be if all would live such a life! He is survived by the widow; three children, namely, Mrs. Edna BRITT, Mrs. Rowena VAUGHT and Mrs. Margaret SIMMONS; ten grandchildren, two brothers, William S. CORBIN, near Owensburg; James M. CORBIN, Clay City R. R. 2; one sister, Mrs. Frank HORN, Bloomfield Star Route, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the Free Methodist Church in Bedford, conducted by the Rev. BLACK and Rev. SHARP. Pallbearers were Virgil CORBIN, Jesse CORBIN, Elmer CORBIN, Homer CORBIN, Will CORBIN (nephews of the deceased), and Ray SIMMONS. Flower bearers were Mrs. Cecil ANDERSON, Mrs. Fred WHITAKER, Mrs. Mary SCHRUMP, Mrs. Byrle BEEMAN, Mrs. Dorothy GRETZAR, Miss Phyllis BRITT, Miss Sally NEW, and Miss Mildred CORBIN. The Ever Ready mal quartet of Bedford sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "In the Land Where We Never Grow," and "Going Down the Valley." Their well-trained soft melody was as a mother's lullaby to her babe. Burial was in the beautiful Green Hill Cemetery. "God has not promised skies always blue, Flower strewn pathways, all our lives through; "But God has promised strength for the day, Rest for the labor, light for the way, Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love." - We wish to thank everyone who helped in any way, for their kindness during the sickness and after the death of our loved one. Wes especially thank the ministers, the singers, those who sent the lovely flowers, the undertaker, pallbearers and flower girls. [Transcribed on November 26, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] George RUSH, one of fourteen children who came to bless the home of John C. and Mahala (HOLMES) RUSH, was born February 17, 1855, on the RUSH homestead in eastern Greene County, and departed this life October 27, 1940, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie GILLILAND, and husband, at Solsberry, aged 85 years, eight months and 12 days. His parents were sturdy, hardworking pioneers who came to Indiana from North Carolina and Maryland. George, with the other brothers and sisters, shared in the hard work and simple joys of the pioneer home and in the winter months attended the district school. He was a lad when the Civil War broke out, and the departure of his older brother, Norman, for the front left a profound impression on his mind and helped to inspire a lasting admiration for the immortal LINCOLN, an interesting biography of whom he always enjoyed reciting. In his early teens he was converted in the M. E. church at Old Union. Later he became identified with the M. E. church at Hobbieville in which he held membership the rest of his life. He loved the services of the church-all of them-but especially did he enjoy its music and was for some time chorister in the Old Union Church. In 1883 he was married to Sarah COX, of Hobbieville. To this union five children were born: Minnie GILLILAND, Oletis, who died in her second year; Theodore, Lula JOHNSON and Bert, all living near here, and who were all with him at the time of death. His faithful companion died February 29, 1932. Since then he has made his home with his daughters and their husbands, Mrs. GILLILAND and Mrs. JOHNSON, who, with the husbands and brothers, have done everything they could for his comfort and well-being. There has been no sacrifice to great for these children and children-in-laws to make for Dad, and Mother, too. Their devotion has been remarkable and untiring. For the last five years, he had suffered from heart trouble, but not until last Thursday was his condition alarming. On the Sunday before, he, Mr. and Mrs. JOHNSON and Theodore had visited with a childhood friend, Mrs. Abbie HOLMES, and family and all had a wonderful day, not realizing how near the call to come home was. He had often expressed the wish that he might die singing. The wish was almost granted, for when he was nearly too weak to be heard, they caught the words of one stanza and the chorus of a favorite song, "I'm Going Home," and on Sunday morning about the hour people were wending their way to God's house of worship, Death came so gently it was like a peaceful sleep. Survivors besides the children mentioned above are three sisters, Nancy PRICE, of Good Night, Oklahoma; Emma GASTINEAU, of Ellington, Missouri, and Artie RUSH, on the old home place, and six grandchildren, Mrs. Beatrice GARDNER, Harry JOHNSON and George, Theo, Donald and Gene RUSH. He was a man of firm convictions, honest in all his dealing, a lover of God's word, good music, his family and friends. - The family desires to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to their father's happiness all these years and who has assisted them in this sad bereavement. He was the youngest of a family of six children born to John and Nancy (HUDSON) TETRICK, all having preceded him in death. He was married to Elvira HASKETT July 27, 1893. To this union five children were born, namely: Mrs. Rant SEXSON, Mrs. Clarence MARTINDALE, Joe TETRICK and Van TETRICK, all of Indianapolis, and John TETRICK, of the Clifty community. "Rat" as he was better known, had been in failing health for more than a year and had several .{unclear}... bore his suffering with patience and fortitude, always cheerful and looking on the "sunny side." Everything that kind hearts and willing hands could do to relieve him of his suffering and stay the hand of Death proved to no avail. But they can reflect in their sadness and be comforted with the thought that they did all that human hands could do, and they weep not as those who have no hope, for he would often speak of his willingness to go, and of the many friends he had in the Glory World. He enjoyed having Christians come in and pray in his behalf. Approximately ten years ago he attended a meeting at Hobbieville, Indiana, and was truly converted, although he never affiliated with any church. He enjoyed talking to his family about his prospect of future destiny, and in conversation with his daughter, Nellie, told her of his conversion and how reluctant he was in taking the ministers, who were visiting in his home, to church that night, and it was then that he experience a change of heart, and on one occasion when the sun was shining in all its glory he remarked to his daughter, "Wouldn't this be a nice day to go?" The daughter asked, "Go, where, Dad?" And he said, "To the Glory World." He was always jolly, and his many friends were always welcome in his home; and it has been said that no one in the community fed as many people as did Mr. and Mrs. TETRICK. He will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends, but his passing will be most keenly felt by his dear companion, and brother-in-law, Gary HASKETT, who was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. TETRICK and cared for as their own. He leaves to mourn their loss, his devoted companion, his affectionate children and five grandchildren, namely: Robert, Hiram and Mary Ann Sexson, and Richard Lee and Judith Ann TETRICK, and a host of other relatives and friends." Author: Sponslerml Surnames: SPONSLER Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/9804.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have attached some censuses that list Mary E. or Laura. Mary E. was the half sister of my grandfather, Robert O. Sponsler. Laura was Robert's sister. Mary E.'s mother was Lucinda Jones who married Richard in Tuscarawas County Ohio in 1844. They moved to Indiana in late 1840's. Lucinda died there about 1861. Richard remarried and moved to Illinois. I have posted a photo of Richard and other genealogical information at findagrave.com where you can do a query for Richard. Richard and his 2nd wife Emily (Laura's mother) are buried together with Laura and her husband James. My home email is [email protected] if you would like more information, feel free to send me wire.
