[Transcribed on January 2, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] At 10 o'clock Tuesday morning John H. B. O'NEALL, a respected citizen of this place, passed away after being confined only a few days of pneumonia. He contracted a cold Thanksgiving day from which he never recovered, but he refused to give up till last Thursday when he left the store-MCCRACKEN'S hardware store-where he was employed, went to his home and it was soon found that his condition was serious. He grew rapidly worse till death came to relieve his sufferings. He was born in Cass Township, December 1, 1839; died January 2, 1906; aged 66 years, 1 month and 1 day. He was twice married. His first wife was Susan C. DYER {Book G, Page 568}, to whom he was married Mar 1, 1866. Of this union two sons-Will and Charles survive. They live at Chicago and arrived here thirty minutes after their father's death. February 9, 1882 {Book L, Page 259}, he was again united in marriage, this time to Arlena CARROLL, and she with four sons and one daughter survive. During the Civil War he was a gallant soldier, serving nearly four years as a member of COMPANY I, 4TH REGIMENT, INDIANA VOLUNTEER CAVALRY. He was with Gen. WILSON'S command at the capture of Jeff DAVIS and it always gave him particular pleasure to recount to his friends how comical Mr. DAVIS looked while disguised in female attire. He served as deputy sheriff under Daniel M. BYNUM for two terms and for one term under Sheriff Joe SEXSON. To accept the above position he moved to Bloomfield in 1876 and resided here continuously until his death. He had been a faithful employee in a number of stores and for the past ten or twelve years he had been employed at the hardware store where he kept on working till within six days of his death. He was strictly honest, honorable in all his dealings and commanded the respect of every one with whom he came in contact with. The funeral services were held from the family residence this (Thursday) morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. A. K. PRICE, and the remains laid to rest in the Bloomfield cemetery. The entire community extends its sympathy to the family in its sudden bereavement. - Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. F. Bowen & Co. Inc. Indianapolis, Indiana INDIAN CREEK TOWNSHIP Indian creek township is the center one of the three which form the western border of Lawrence county. The name is taken from the creek that enters at the northwest corner, leaving near the southwest corner. Saltcreek and the East fork of White river form the eastern and southern bound aries. The township is one of the original five, and now is much smaller than at first. A few of the men who entered land in this township during the days up until 1820 were: Henry Speed. John Towell, Simon Ruebottom, Benjamin Beeson, Silas Dixon, Jonathan Lindley, Ephraim Lee, Isaac Williams,Joseph Richardson, Seymour Cobb, Archibald Wood, Felter Hughes, James Garton, David Sears, Jesse Towell and Peyton Wilson, in 1816; David Ribelin, James Duncan. Adam Siler. John Duncan, John Cloud, John Roberts,Reuben Short, Jeremiah Boone, Elijah Boone,... Elijah Boone is enumerated in Lawrence Co., Indiana in 1920 and 1930 but can be found in Greene Co., Indiana in 1940 where he remaind with his wife (Jennie Waggoner) until their deaths, her in Mar 1845 and his on 2 Aug 1845. It is undetermined (at least by me) whether they are buried in Greene County or in the Boone Cemetery in Lawrence County. I do have a bit more info on their 10 children if, in fact, this is the Elijah Boone you're looking for. This Elijah would be my 3rd Great Granduncle, the son of Jeremiah and Joice (Neville) Boone and was born 5 May 1790 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
