[Transcribed on January 9, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Henry JACKSON, the eldest child of George W. and Jane (BOSBURY) JACKSON, was born in London, England, April 11, 1837, his parents starting to America when he was but four weeks old. They were six weeks coming over, the trip being made in the old time sailing vessels. They stopped at Baltimore, Maryland, later going to Dresden, Ohio. They remained there until his father's death, Henry being but five years old. Two years later he was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank STAFFORD, where he was reared to manhood. He was married to Sarah DAUGHERTY in 1859, moving to Ogle County, Illinois, and remaining there until 1862, when he enlisted in the army in CO H 92nd REGIMENT MOUNTED INFANTRY and served his country until the end of the Civil War. After the war he returned to Coshocton County, Ohio, remaining there until October 1872 when he moved to Greene County, Indiana, buying his late residence from Thomas HARDESTY, who had entered the land from the government. His wife ! died in May 1893, and being alone with no one to comfort him and feeling the need of a companion and helper, he married Miss Anna WELCH of Dresden, Ohio, in June 1894. He was several years his wife's senior. A short time after their marriage he had the misfortune to lose one hand by the accidental discharge of a gun. Throughout the remaining years of his life he received the constant care of a little child by his patient wife. "Uncle Henry," as he was familiarily known, was honest and upright and was respected by his neighbors and friends. And he was a friend to all. Although he passed his four-score mile post he was jolly, always had a cheerful word for old and young, and the little children were often amused by his jokes and pranks. He had been in failing health for sometime, but up to a few days prior to his death he was able to go for his daily papers, which were a great comfort to him in his declining years. He was very much concerned about the great conflict in ! which our county was engaged and often said he wished he could go and help with the victory. He was a life-long Republican, was a great reader and kept posted on the issues of the day. He united with the Latter Day Saints church in 1889 and was true to his faith until his death which occurred January 3, 1919. He was eighty-one years, nine months and twenty-three days old. He was laid to rest at Ashcraft Chapel Sunday, funeral services conducted by Rev. Shannon BAKER. Services were held at the grave by the F. E. & C. U. lodge of which he was a member. The bereaved companion has the sympathy of the entire community. M. E. H. - NOTES-RLJ: NATURALIZATION: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Thursday, May 30, 1912, Page 1, Column 5, "Applies for Naturalization": Henry JACKSON, one of Jackson township's oldest and most respected citizens, has applied to the court for naturalization as an American citizen. Mr. JACKSON was born in England and came to this country in 1837 when but a babe. He has been a voter and has voted, for over fifty years. Under the new registration law, which first date of registration was May 9, it was discovered that he was not an American citizen, and he has taken steps through the court to remedy this error. NATURALIZATION: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Thursday, September 26, 1912, Volume XXXV, No. 45, Page 1, Column 5: Henry JACKSON, of Jackson Township, was granted his final papers as a citizen of the United States. Mr. JACKSON has been a resident of this county for many years but never was naturalized. He has voted at every election, but the new registration law compelled him to take out papers as a citizen of this country. He is a native of England. Actually, I am aware of Hannibal Hood tho I don't know his relationship to Serena's husband Christopher Hood. Christopher Hood married Serena Pettiford (Daughter of Jesse Hood, 28th Indiana Colored Regiment). Christopher was killed in Indianapolis in a railroad accident in 1892. Serena moved back with her mother in North Vernon for a time, however, she disappears after that point. I found a reference to her in Grant Indiana (Greene county). I agree. Could you possibly post those pics on findagrave? I am a volunteer for findagrave.com, taking photos of my nearby cemeteries. When I traveled in Indiana last summer, the pictures I took I posted to findagrave, just in case someone else is also looking for one of my ancestors. (If the person is not listed as being in the cemetery, please add, so that other researchers can find their ancestor.) Mary in IA

Hi All, Why don't you upload your photos of gravestones to Findagrave.com. It's a wonderful genealogy site, there are already many Greene Co gravemarkers there. Many Greene County cemeteries are represented but not all stones are there. It's a great tool. You can search the entire US by surname too.
