Vernon Baptist Church, 3 1/2 miles Northwest of Worthington, Indiana. This cemetery was a family burial plot". From that description and the fact that the most recent burial shown in the inventory of grave stones at this cemetery was 1905, this is probably not an active cemetery. Under Indiana law, maintenance of inactive cemeteries is the responsibility of the Township Trustee. In this case the Trustee of Jefferson Township would be the responsible official. [Transcribed on January 26, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Daniel (Tucker) AXE, son of Jacob and Eliza (DARROW) AXE, was born at Ashland, Ohio, January 11, 1847. He obeyed the summons to life's call November 13, 1938, aged ninety-one years, ten months and three days. IN the spring of 1851 the family moved from Ohio to a farm near Old Tulip. There he grew to manhood. With the exception of his early years his entire life was spent in Greene County, where he engaged in the interest of farming. In the year 1879 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann (TERRELL) EDWARDS. To this union was born six children. Two preceded their father in death, namely, Edward and Daniel. The surviving children are Harry AXE, or Linton; John W. AXE, at whose home in Taylor Township, he passed away; Margaret, now Mrs. George CARNEGIE, of near Scotland, and Lee AXE, of Hammond. Besides these he had a step-son, Samuel EDWARDS, who was as near in his affections as his own children. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His companion preceded him in death in February 1929. Since that time he has made his home with his children. He was fond of the out-of-doors. He loved those things with which nature clothes this earth, the flowers, the trees, and the streams and the birds, that fill this earth with song. He possessed an active mind and was keenly interest in world affairs. He spent much time in reading the daily papers and could converse at length on affairs of the day. He enjoyed talking to friends and acquaintances and recalling incidents of his youth. He had a wonderful memory and was very witty in his conversation. The community will greatly feel the loss of a very respected and loyal citizen. He has gone from among us, yet his life has left lasting impressions that time will not erase. - We wish to thank our friends, neighbors, the minister, the singers, and everyone who assisted in any way during the illness and after the death of our father, Daniel AXE. Man Was Founder Of City of Tulsa." [Transcribed on January 25, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Ulysses M. BURCHAM, seventy-two years old, who died recently in the Freeman-Greene County Hospital in Linton, rightfully could be called the "founder" of the thriving city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, according to a story which has come to light here. Mr. BURCHAM died of pneumonia in the Linton hospital while visiting with relatives here and in Linton. He was born and grew to manhood near Bloomfield, but in 1885, when he was about nineteen years old, he listened to stories of fortunes being made in the gold fields of California, and decided to go to that state. Mr. BURCHAM "stuck" with the hunt for the elusive yellow metal for a period of three years, but succeeded in finding but one large nugget, and this he believed to be worthless. At the end of three years the former Greene County resident decided that his future lay elsewhere, so he left California and went to the state of Oklahoma. Here, on sudden impulse, the story continues, he took the large nugget to an assayer and was agreeably surprised to learn that it was worth $1,100. This sum of money formed the basis of his fortune, for he purchased several acres of land with this amount and began farming operations. Later a railroad company wished to run a track across his property, offering to pay Mr. BURCHAM for the right of way. The former Greene County man declined the offer, but stated that he would donate them the right of way if the company would build a shipping depot on his farm. The company accepted this offer and the depot was built. Later after the petroleum industry entered the region this depot became the center of extensive shipping operations and the city of Tulsa sprang up, with Mr. BURCHAM's farm as its nucleus. He managed to "hang on" to his holdings and at the time of his death owned twenty-eight dwellings and several business buildings in the city. [Transcribed on January 24, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Sarah Ann MASON was born in Bloomfield, Indiana, on July 20, 1859, to Thomas R. and Marietta WILLIAMS, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter JONES, in Carbon {Madison County, Illinois}, May 4, 1939, aged seventy-nine years, eight and one-half months. Her girlhood days were spent in Bloomfield where she attended school until she graduated after which she taught in the public schools of Greene County. On July 27, 1884, she was united in marriage to Jesse B. MASON, a railway postal clerk, also a native of Greene County. For a time they made their home in Switz City, later moving to Sidell, Illinois, where they lived until Mr. MASON resigned from the mail service. Returning to Greene County, they purchased a farm in Grant Township where they made their home for a number of years, Mr. MASON later being appointed postmaster at Switz City. He passed away July 29, 1918. Coming from a Christian home, she united with the Methodist church at an early age, and remained a firm and devoted member throughout life. In every field of the church she was a faithful worker, willingly carrying her share of the burdens. In the home, the church, and the community her Christian influence has been a guide and inspiration to all who knew her. She had the gift of seeing the good in all things. All the beauties of nature appealed to her in an unusual degree. In each flower and tree she recognized the handiwork of God. Much of what interested her most she expressed in verse, and often entertained and delighted her friends with her gift of reciting. Her life was full of service for others. Surviving are three daughters, Marietta JONES, of Carbon; Lydia Ellen GASTINEAU, of Switz City, and Mildred Owen, of Worthington; three grandchildren, Harriett Ann, Robert and Sherman GASTINEAU, of Switz City; one sister, Mrs. John A. CRAVENS, of Worthington, and two brothers, Morris WILLIAMS, of Bolivar , Tennessee, and Hoyt WILLIAMS, of Detroit, Michigan. We, who knew Mrs. MASON, feel that she is not dead. "Her hand is gone; her voice is stilled, for that is what the Master willed, but this can never take away the life she lived from day to day; the quiet goodly things she did which from the world were hid. Like waves from a pebble dropped in a pool was her good work throughout life's school. She is not dead; it can't be true, for she lives on in me and you." - We wish to express our sincere thanks to our friends for their expressions of sympathy and their many acts of kindness at the time of the death of our beloved mother and sister, Sarah Ann MASON.
