Thomas was the Greene Co. Delegate to the 1850-51 Indiana State Constitutional Convention and was also Justice of the Peace, yet there is no listing for he or his wife Mary in "Greene County Indiana Abstract of Wills, 1825-1904". Is this book exhaustive or is there a possiblity that he did indeed leave a will but it just didn't make it into the Abstract? If there is anyone who could do a look-up at the Greene Co. Courthouse in Bloomfield it would be geatly appreciated. Jeff Butler Winchester, VA.

George Elmer Humphreys was my Great uncle. He moved to OR. I have been trying to find the connection between the TN Humphreys and my Humprheys for a while. It always seemed so odd that they wound up In Linton at the same time. My GGrandparents William and Clarissa Lotz Humphreys originated in VA. moved to OH, and then on to IN. I know that the TN Humprheys also came from VA. There is a story in the family, "two brothers came to the Ohio River, and one went north, the other went south" However, no proof. I have some history of land transactions in TN for the Humprheys, along with some relationship discussions, and also the info regarding the ancestors of a Robert Elllis. In this, they have Martha Ellis married to Hawkins Humpreys and listed Hawkins as a son of my William and Clarissa. Of course, not true. By the way, do you know that the Rectors are descendants of the first German colony (1714) in VA......called Germanna?
Census secrets rule lifted for '30 count Personal records opened by U.S. Associated Press WASHINGTON June Hall moved her finger down the page, found her grandmother's name and smiled. After a half-hour of scrolling through microfilm of personal records from the 1930 census, Hall had hit pay dirt: the line that showed her grandmother's house, the home where Hall was born. Hall joined dozens of people Monday at the National Archives looking to fill in the blanks of their family histories as privacy protection for individual 1930 census records expired. The expiration, 72 years after each census, allows people to see information beyond the dry statistics typically available after the once-a-decade count. "It's a real high. You get into this and you just get hooked," said Hall, of Baltimore. While Hall was not yet born in 1930, she read that her grandmother lived on what was then a dirt road, while her father worked as a salesman and lived at home. Historians billed it as the largest release of such personal records by the federal government, providing a gold mine of genealogical data for family researchers. "We get a picture more revealing than any previous census," John Carlin, archivist of the United States, said before cutting the ribbon to the census research room. "The census is still the most complete record we have in our country at any single point in time," he said. Original 1930 forms have been destroyed, but not before copies were put on 2,667 rolls of microfilm in the 1940s. Those copies were made available at archives headquarters in Washington, and at 13 other offices around the country. The regional facilities are in Anchorage, Alaska; Laguna Niguel and San Bruno, Calif.; Denver; East Point, Ga.; Chicago; Waltham and Pittsfield, Mass.; Kansas City, Mo.; New York City; Philadelphia; Fort Worth; and Seattle. The National Archives' 1930 census site is at http://1930census.ar-chives.gov/. The Census Bureau is at www.census.gov/. Historians said the records would provide a more detailed look at life in America at the dawn of the Depression. The 1930 census date of April 1 came more than five months after the October 1929 stock market crash. "I'm trying to learn more about my father's house and any other things I didn't know about him," said Hunter Alexander, who was scouring records for Baltimore County. All Americans answered the same 32 questions. Some typified the times, such as "Does this household have a radio set?" No forms were mailed. Census-takers visited homes and recorded answers on an answer grid that looked like a giant report card. "I'm trying to finish a family tree," Reggie Green, of Washington, said as he scrolled through Orangeburg County in South Carolina. "This might help fill in some of the branches." http://1930census.archives.gov/ http://www.census.gov/

Yes, I would appreciate the info you have on the William Ellis family. Regarding the Humphreys connections - I have found three diffferent connections with the William Ellis family and the Humphreys. First, William's sister Mary married Hanson Humphreys. Their children included "the" Andrew Hymphreys born March 30, 1821. Second, William's daughter Martha married Hawkins Humphreys. And, third probably the one of which you speak William's son George Washinton Ellis married Mary Janet Denton whos mother was Margaret Rector, aunt Jeanette Rector, and grand father Joseph Rector. Janet's cousin/Joseph's grand daughter/Jeanette's daughter Julia Rector Moss married George Elmer Humphreys. I am not sure what the connections, if any, are between the three different Humphreys lines. I am not aware of any Humphreys in my direct ancestors. William was my ggg grand father and his son Stephen was my gg grand father.

Hi all, :) It's said that "April showers bring May flowers." Well, ships and planes bring immigrants, no matter what month/year it is or what the weather was like. There's one thing to be said about humans ~ we're a mobile species. It doesn't matter what country they came from or what country they ended up in. It also doesn't matter what the reason for emigration was. Your April challenge is to find an immigrant or an immigrant family to the area and post him/her/them to the list, whether it's your immigrant or not is irrelevant. As long as the person/family is not sitting in their country of birth during any census or a death, etc. ~ that's what we're after. Name ONLY the immigrant or immigrant family and tell where they came from and when. You can name the ancestors, but no descendants. And since two months were mentioned ('April showers/May flowers'), this challenge will involve April and May. The second half of this challenge will be disclosed of course, in May! :) But for April, you just might want to open a new folder labeled "April challenge" and keep all the challenge messages from April in it. I can give you an advance notice that you're going to be using them in May. Have fun! :) Colleen
