Bloomington (IN) Telephone, Apr 21, 1914, p. 4. WANTED TO COME TO MONROE, NOW WANTS TO GET AWAY Edward Duncan, the Linton wife murderer in jail here awaiting trial, is now very anxious to get his case out of Monroe County. Duncan took a change of venue from Greene county to this county before the Hardin murder, and figurered that there would be no special feeling against a wife murderer in this county. He fears now it is different and he wants to get out of Monroe for his trial. Duncan killed his ex-wife in a drunken rage. After his wife was divorced, she remarried and one day Duncan went to her home and found her sitting on the lap of her second husband. He opened up with his revolver, killed the woman and injured the man. The man recovered and will testify against the murderer.

To this union were born three sons, John Troy, and two sons who died in infancy. He united with the church at Bethel about thirty-five years ago and from that time did his utmost to do what was right. He was a loving husband and father , although he stayed with us many years it pained our hearts to part with him. He was always so kind and affectionate to everyone, having a smile for whomsoever he met, and always some encouraging words. He was especially kind to children in whom he took a great interest. We well know he can never come back to us but we are greatly consoled in that some day we can go to him, and surely it is our aim to do so. He leaves a wife, three children, John Troy, Mrs. Steve BLAKER and Mrs. Harley MAY, a mother, three sisters, four brothers and sixteen grandchildren, besides a host of friends and relatives to mourn his loss. He will sadly missed by the people of this community and not only this, for he was known far and wide. The funeral was held Tuesday, July 3, at Tulip church by Rev. SLINKARD. Dies at Age of Eighty-One Years and Is Buried at Newberry Cemetery.” [Transcribed 30 Apr 2002 from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.] Nathan Vincent SLINKARD, the son of Henry J. and Margaret SLINKARD, was born in Cass Township, April 20, 1836, and departed this life December 2, 1917, at the advanced age of eighty-one years, seven months and twelve days. He was the fourth child of a family of twelve children; all of whom preceded him in death except Frederick SLINKARD, of Linton, and Catherine MOORE, of Newberry. He was married to Sarah EDWARDS, of Monroe City, Indiana, April 14, 1863; who departed this life April 7, 1912. To this union were born six children, four sons and two daughters. The sons are: William L. SLINKARD and Theodore E. SLINKARD, of Bloomfield; Charles E. SLINKARD, of Worthington and Stephen W. SLINKARD, of Newberry. The daughters are Mrs. V. F. SPOONER, of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Charles T. ARMSTRONG, who lived at Evansville, and who died July 6, 1907, leaving three children-Russell ARMSTRONG, now of the U. S. Navy, Battleship Oklahoma; Estella ARMSTRONG, of Terre Haute, and Evelyn ARMSTRONG, of Worthington. Nathan SLINKARD’ S father was the owner of the old water mill on First Creek, and the deceased, early in life, learned to saw lumber with the upright saw, and make meal and flour with the burr mill. He was a carpenter, brickmason and farmer; and when his sons became helpful he farmed extensively, which occupation he followed as long as he was able to work. His limited schooling was in the old log schoolhouse with puncheon floors and greased paper windows and big fireplace, where was taught the three R’s. In early life he joined the Lutheran church, in which he lived a consistent Christian life, and devoted member. He seldom missed church or Sunday-school, as long as he could go, and in his declining days his Bible was his daily companion, in which he found constant comfort. After the death of his companion, life was lonesome, and he was only waiting for a call to the Better Country, as was frequently indicated in his Grace—“Go with us through life, stand by us in death, and, eventually save us for Christ’s sake, Amen.” The funeral was held at the Lutheran Church at Newberry at 1:30 on last Tuesday. The sermon was preached by Rev. Jacob WESNER, of Nappanee, Indiana, a playmate, schoolmate and boyhood friend, and one whom deceased had heard preach for sixty-years. He was assisted by Rev. MAY of Washington. The pall-bearers were members of the I. O. O. F. lodge at Newberry, which he joined when the lodge was instituted, and during all the years he has kept up his membership, and at one time was active in the lodge work/ He leaves a host of relatives in Green and adjoining counties. The remains were interred in the S. A. SLINKARD Cemetery. There were those present who had been lifelong friends and neighbors; some sixty-, some seventy, some eight, some eighty-five years old. There were those from a distance, men and women, who had learned to love the deceased, and who came to pay their last visit with him. His brother Frederick SLINKARD, of Linton was unable to be present. His only living sister, Mrs. Catharine MOORE, whose husband, John D. MOORE, was buried only a little more than a week ago, was present, as was also one brother of his deceased, wife, Lemuel EDWARDS, who lives at Monroe City. Another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers; another human tie is broken, yet his work was done, and well done; and, wearied with life’s duties and cares, weary of suffering and awaiting, he lay down to rest. — FATHER IS DEAD. Father is dead. He died at the age of nearly eighty-two years. His was a quiet life; an active life; a Christian life. He was a consistent member of the Lutheran church; a constant member of and participant in the Sunday school, and took an active part in all things that uplifted society and bettered the citizenship of the community in which he lived. He supported all efforts to raise the moral and Christian standard of the community. He was born in that community and lived his entire life there. He saw his children born and reared in the same community; he saw them grow and become men and women; marry and move away from the same community; he watched the light fade from mother in the same community, and also his youngest daughter pass to perfect rest; he saw them buried in the same community; he slept away, peacefully, quietly, and was buried in the same community. And that same community was all present when he left it; testifying by words, looks, and tears, the res! pect and esteem in which he was held. It was enough.

LAURA ANN EDMUNDSON CARR.” [Transcribed 30 Apr 2002 from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.] Laura Ann Edmundson (STALLINGS) CARR was born in Washington County, Kentucky, April 29, 1833, and died at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Joseph HORN, near Koleen, in Greene County, Indiana, August 20, 1917; aged eighty-four years, three months and twenty-eight days. She was the daughter of Willa W. STALLINGS and Permelia (NORTHCRAFT) STALLINGS, and had four brothers and four sisters. Of this family only one survives her—David W. STALLINGS, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, who is her junior by five years. At the age of sixteen, she came with her family to Indiana, locating first east and later southwest of Bedford, on Salt Creek, where she resided till her marriage. On February 24, 1859, she was married to James Newton CARR, of Greene County, Indiana, and resided first in Lawrence County for a few years, then in the Kentucky Ridge neighborhood, in Jackson Township, Greene County, Indiana, for nearly thirty-eight years. She was the mother of three children—John Wesley CARR, of Swarthmore, PA; Martha Ellen WALTERS, of Edina, Missouri; and Mary Permelia Dovie HORN, of Koleen Indiana. Each of her children survives her, but her husband died more than thirteen years ago. Since his death, she has made her home with her son, and was in Indiana to visit her daughter and old neighbors at the time of her death. She belonged truly to the pioneer mothers, who are rapidly passing from us. She was, by instinct and feeling, a southern woman. Her parents came from Maryland and Virginia, and in her early life they owned slaves. When the great Civil War came, she belonged to that noble band of southerners, who, though loving the South, cast their lot with the North, and her youngest brother, David, was a Union soldier throughout the entire war. Her educational opportunities were few; yet she was especially gifted in writing and continued to keep up a correspondence—not only with her children and grandchildren, but with several of her neighbors and friends, both old and young. She had a great appreciation of learning and never failed to encourage her children and grandchildren to acquire an education. Humor, romance and sentiment especially appealed to her, and as a result, she never ceased to be interested in people—especially young people. She never grew old in thou! ght and feeling and though a semi-invalid all of her life, visions of hope, joy and love were ever before her. She dearly loved company, and was never so happy as when with people of refinement and culture. She was fond of travel, and not only enjoyed but profited by what she saw. During the last thirteen years of her life, she traveled more that thirty thousand miles and became familiar with much of the scenery in the eastern part of the United States. She liked to visit great cities and was fond of the mountains and the sea; yet no place was quite so beautiful and so dear to her as the hills of Greene County, and her one request was that she might repose among their quietude and beauty until the Great Awakening. In early womanhood, she joined the Baptist church, and continued a member until her death. . She attended church whenever she had the opportunity; and loved and served the Master. She was concerned but little about creed or dogma, but believed and practiced joy, peace, temperance, love, and other fruits of the spirit. Though a constant sufferer, yet her last illness was of short duration. She was taken ill Thursday night while visiting among her old neighbors. She was brought to her daughter’s home the next day, and shortly before dawn Monday morning she entered upon the life immortal. She lived the simple life, and died lake a philosopher and true disciple of the Master. May she rest in peace. J. W. Cain Uland.” [Transcribed 25 Apr 2002 from the original newspaper on file with the Recorder of Greene County, Indiana] Mrs. Leona J. (CAIN) ULAND, wife of John R. ULAND, was born in Greene County, Indiana, August 23, 1877. Departed this life April 9, 1912, aged 34 years, 7 months and 16 days. The husband and little son Ivan, together her mother, eight sisters and three brothers with other relatives and friends mourn in her death the loss of a most devoted wife and mother, a loving daughter and sister and a kind friend. The father, one sister and brother have preceded her to the better world. Mrs. ULAND was an ideal wife and mother. Though long a great sufferer she bore her affliction with the most exemplary fortitude and patience. She early in life united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of which until her death she remained a faithful member. She had but one purpose in life, and that the happiness and welfare of her home and its loved ones who have been so sorely bereft to her death. Though the husband made every sacrifice and rendered every service within his power to stay the inevitable, nothing availed. Her deepest sympathy of appreciation never failed, always most cheerful, giving little though to her suffering self, but ever mindful of the loved ones she was called to leave in sorrow. She was good neighbor as was shown in the kind attentions her many friends paid her during her illness, and her death. The church suffers the loss of a faithful member, and the community a model woman. To the husband, the little son, and relatives the entire vicinity extends their sincere sympathy. Such devotion by a husband to his wife is seldom ever seen as Mr. ULAND gave to his wife. A busy man he quit! his work, gave up his position as a traveling salesman and devoted his entire time and constant attention to his wife. She was confined to her bed for weeks and months and during all that time, he was always at her side and attending her many wishes and desires. — NOTES—RLJ: (1) DEATH RECORDS OF GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA, Health Department, East Spring Street, Bloomfield, Indiana, Book H-6, Page 30: ULAND, Leona, female, white, age 34, died 9 Apr 1912 in Bloomfield, Father—Frank CAIN, b. At least, she would be the appropriate age and all her siblings ages in the 1850 census for Greene Co. IN go along with the dates/names that are listed in the Bible. Of course, the names/dates were listed later. The Bible itself was not published until 1869 and many of the events/births/marriages which are recorded were much earlier than that. There is one additional child listed in both the census and Bible for Andrew and Susan(bible)or Susanna (census)Weaver and that is Sarrah (bible) or Sarah (census) born July 23, 1850 than you have in your list. My query is: From which Weaver family did Andrew J. and Susan/Susanna descend? I am a great-great grandchild of Andrew Weaver and Malinda Weaver of Grayson County, Va. I know some Weaver families here in Indiana. But at the present time they have no knowledge of or interest in exploring genealogy. If I could make a connection to the Weavers of Grayson and/ or Ashe County, I would be happy to make a copy of the Bible's 4 pages to place in a genealogy resource center for those two areas as well as Greene and Monroe County in IN.

Culbertson, married to John H. Vaughn, 3 Oct, 1889, in Greene County, IN. There were Culbertsons near Jasonville. Were these Lizzie's family? Lizzie may have been married to a --------------------Setty, before she married John H. Vaughn. I have had no luck in finding any record of here, except her and John's marriage certificate. I need her parents, siblings, children, anything. Can anyone help? Email aranglen@raok.zzn.com

She had a brother named Lewis Washington Purcell, b. August 1852 in Greene County, IN. He died 1929, in Sullivan County, IN. I have him married to Mandalia Moss, 1 Oct, 1879. Could he have been married more than once? Is this the same Washington you have, I am wondering? Email aranglen@raok.zzn.com
