These records are as complete as they could be but there is always room for error or omission. We are all very grateful that these people took the time to compile this information. The older cemetery stones are decaying and next to impossible to read. If there is no stone or it was destroyed, then what? What I am trying to say is, the books are a wonderful guide but some may be missing. c http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BENHAM/
I don't have too much history but will share what I can remember. Newberry used to be a fairly busy place. All most all of the original buildings have been torn down. Since it is next to the East fork of White River, it was probably really busy before major highways came into play. My parents used to talk about going there to watch movies on the side of a building. Kind of like a "drive in" theater but without the sound, maybe. That would have been in the 30's or 40's. Griffin Industries is a rendering plant. They process dead animals. Roadkill, sick farm animals, etc. There was a grocery store. The kind that had old wood floors and the meat counter was at the back of the store. There was a New/Used Appliance store. It was owned by a man named SCOTT. There are several small cemeteries in the area. It is surrounded by rich farm land. Some of the best in the State. Once you get away from the sand bottoms, that is. I am positive that there was a mill on the Northeast side of town but do not remember the name. Hope I didn't bore you too much. It is now a place that you will literally miss if you blink. :) CJ
Where exactly is the Newberry Cemetery located?

I started with Taylor Township and only found one Davis listed: Scotland Cemetery Davis, Beulah C. 23 Aug 1915 - 23 Nov 1974 Beech Creek Township has many Davis's but no Absolom or Nancy (w/correct dates) Cass Township only has Blanche Quackenbush Davis 1894 - 26 Apr 1978 Center Township has many Davis's but no Absolom or Nancy. Highland Township has a few Davis's but no Absolom or Nancy. Jackson Township has quite a few Davis's but no Absolom or Nancy. Richland has a few Davis's but no Absolom or Nancy. Sorry, but it appears they aren't buried in Eastern Greene county or their graves are among the "lost". You might want to check the Western Greene County listings. I don't have them but perhaps someone else on the list might. While visiting Newberry I went to the New Slinkard Cemetery and the Newberry Cemetery. I took some random pics of familiar names from this list. I intended to post them to the list but Rootsweb won't let me. So, I am going to describe the pics and if any are of interest to you send me your personal email address and I will send them privately. One pic is the sign at the entrance of the town just as you cross over the White River. You will see by the sign the town is quite small. I spoke to a number of folk and most don't live in Newberry they just come to town to work in the bank, post office and gas station/market. The only industry in Newberry is a place a local called "The Stink Plant" (Griffin Industries), I never did quite discover what the plant manufactured besides the smell. You have to pass this plant and then cross the "crick" to get to the New Slinkard Cemetery. Apparently, this is the same route to the Old Slinkard, but you have to walk back to the site! and I didn't. According to the book "Cemeteries of Eastern Greene County, the Old Slinkard Cemetery is described as follows: "CASS TOWNSHIP, Section 36. Turn east off State Road 57 in Newberry and follow the signs south to Griffin Industries, which is on County Road 400W. About 200 yards northeast of the water meter at Griffin Industries is a pile of broken marble, which is all that is left of the Old Slinkard Cemetery, said to have contained at least 40 graves at one time. Among the jumble of badly broken markers, two fragments were legible with the names of Samuel Hughen and Samuel Skomp. Searched for and found by Sandra Uland Taylor and Mildred Uland, September 1993." The following list of burials are recorded in the original book "Cemeteries of Eastern Greene County." Slinkard, John Apr 1824 - Apr 1828 Slinkard, John 1821 Slinkard, Catherine Wentz Slinkard, Frederick 1860 Slindard, Catherine 67 yr 5 Aug 1875 Slinkard, Cynthia 1 Oct 1851 Skomp, Samuel 23 Sep 1775 - 1847 Skomp, Susanna Switzer 16 Apr 1776 - 21 Apr 1851 Skomp, Isaac 2 Dec 1804 - 9 July 1874 Skomp, Sally Wesner 11 Aug 1812 - 25 Jan 1851 Skomp, Rebecca C. 20 Jan 1851 - 1 Sep 1851 Bogard, Harriet d/o Abner & Jane 7 yr 9 mo Dec 1841 Hughen, Samuel 2 Nov 1782 Additionally, in the Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of American Revolution Buried in Indiana records the name REANY (REINEY), JOSEPH, Revolutionary War. Joseph Reany was born about 1754 near Burlington New Jersey, died 8 Sep 1846, buried in Old Slinkard Cemetery, Cass Township. Service - served as private in NC troops as follows, Oct 1779, 5 months in Capt John O'Donald's Co in John Locke's Regt; July 1780, 3 months in Capt Peter O'Neals Co under Col. Paisley and was in the battle of Camden; from Oct 1780, 3 months in Capt James Robinson's Co in Col John Littrel's Regt; in 1781, 2 months in Capt Thomas Dugan's Co. What this indicates is that there are at least 20 "lost" ancestors in the Old Slinkard. Now to the pics. Mary E. Slinkard Daniel E. Skomp Charlotte Weaver Harriet E. Morse Julia Imogene Knight Mussleman Calvin & Beryl Miller John E. Slinkard Jesse S. Mercer Moses & Sara Slinkard Quackenbush Sipes Della & Henry Slinkard Henry & Sara Bryant Gail, Iva, Emil Slinkard Harley Nickless Robert Craft Oliver & Madeline Craft Basil & Maranda Hindman Sibyl Craft Glynn Anna Craft J. Winfield Craft Doris Craft Deck Emery Quackenbush Iva Grace & Alva Hindman Emma Jan Knight Melvin Hindman I also took some shots of the New Slinkard from the road to show the condition of the cemetery. Some of the headstones are hidden in and amongst the trees and shrubs. Some are in pretty bad condition. Some are in great condition. The really good ones appear to be recent additions to the cemetery, probably replacements for badly damaged ones. It's great to see descendents care enough to go to the expense of replacing badly damaged headstones. Peggy

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Carmichael, Weaver Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4423.1.2 Message Board Post: I just recently purchased the John C.Carmichael Bible thru E-Bay because of the Weaver info, which is my family. The Bible has a publishers date of 1869. Some of the info was recorded after the fact. On the inside of the bible it states John Calvin Carmichael, his bible. Under Birth section it states that John Calvin Carmichael was born August 29, 1843. Mary Carmichael was born August 11, 1842. Mary Susan Carmichael was born 10/19/1865. William Mosely Crmichael was born 11/1/1868. Malinda Jane Carmichael was born 9/4/1871. Then under that in different greenish ink is an entry: possibly Lisa or Disa Elisabeth was born 5/27/1874. I have not been to library to check these out with census. Next page Under births, it gives; William Weaver b. 7/29/1836. Nancy A Weaver b.4/1/1838, Nathan Weaver b. 5/17/1840, Polly Weaver b. 8/17/1842, Matilda Weaver b. 6/20/1846; John Weaver b. 11/20,1847; Sarrah J. Weaver b.7/23/1850 Archabald Carmichael b. 4/17/1819. I believe the Archabald Carmichael was John Calvin's father born in Surry County, NC who moved to Indiana in 1830 or so and married Lizzie Sparks who was probably born in Wilkes Co.NC They were married in IN although the Bible doesn't have her name. Indiana Marriages before 1850 state that Elizabeth Sparks married Archibald Carmichael 11/22/1842 in Greene Co. IN. The Greene Co IN GenWeb site has an obituary for Archabald. I believe the listing of Weavers are the siblings of Mary. The Polly could be Mary. Birth dates are similar. One is 11/11/1842 birth the other is 11/17/1842 birth although the 7 of the 17 is much darker, as if it has been gone over. According to the 1850 Census of Greene County,In the parents of these Weaver children were Andrew and Susanna Weaver. In the deaths section of the bible, Mary Carmichael died 7/19/1888. John Calvin Carmichael died 3/16/1923. then a space and Wm Weaver died 6/22/1852 Nancy A.dyer died 3/27/1885, Matilda Arthur died 5/30/1876, Martha A.Weaver died 1/25/1882. another space then; Susan Weaver was born 1/6/1813 and died 1/21/1862 Andrew Weaver was born 11/4/1810 and died 3/4/1868. The first page had: John Calvin Carmichael married Mary (hard to tell how it is spelled..could be Weaver, Midrer,Wedrer but I believe it is Weaver. Married 1/21/1864. Under that is Mary S. Carmichael, William F. Bunger was married 5/31/1891 (This is proven by the marriage records of Greene Co. IN. ..I'm just not positive who they are yet) Just below that is John C. Carmichael 8 Mary El(not sure about middle initials) Carmichael married 10/20/1889. Not sure what the 8 after John C. Carmichael means, either. So I don't know whether this was the original John Calvin or someone else who married a little over a year after the original Mary died in 1888.
