I found it on Ancestry.com Submitter: Diane Drogich Subject: Andrew Clinton Mullis Message: Andrew Clinton Mullis The following brief sketch of Andrew Clinton Mullis does not tell all the important deeds in the various walks of this useful man's life, but it will serve to show what one of grit can do in the face of obstacles. He was born in Taylor township, December 9, 1832. He had no chance to go to school. His father dying when he was twelve years old, he was compelled to stay at home and work on the farm, where he remained until he entered the army in defense of his country. Enlisting in 1862 in Company E, Ninety-seventh Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, he served as a private for one and one-half years, then re-enlisted in Company I, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served as brigade teamster until he was discharged in 1865. After the war he rented land in Taylor township, where he lived for sixteen years. Then he bought forty acres in said township and built a home in 1895 and made many substantial improvements, until he now has a fine home and an excellent farm of three hundred acres. He is engaged in general farming and stock raising. He is a Republican and a member of the Church of God. He married Martha Thompson in 1867. She lived in Bloomfield. They have three children, namely: Indiana, who married Willis Leggwood, of Bloomfield; Lulu, who married Lucian Chancy, of Mineral City, Indiana; he was in the Spanish-American war; Winona, who lives at home. Mrs. Mullis is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. Mr. Mullis is the son of Reuben Mullis, a native of Rush county, Indiana. He married Nancy Knox, of Ohio. They came soon after they were married to Greene county, where they secured one hundred and sixty acres of land. He was a hard worker and soon had the land cleared and a good home on it, in which he lived until his death. He was a Whig and a member of the Methodist church. He made his influence felt wherever he went. They had ten children, nine of whom are still living. They are: Robert, a farmer at Koleen, Indiana; Margaret, widow of Benjamin Haywood, of Mineral City; Sarah Ann, wife of James Chaney, also of Mineral City; Sophia, who married Daniel Pruett, both now deceased; Andrew Clinton, the subject of this sketch; Thomas, a farmer of Taylor township; Eli, of Taylor township; Alfred, of Taylor township; Malissa, who married Charles Hasler, of Taylor township. Surnames: BURCHAM, CROSS, MARMON, MCLAUGHLIN Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4667 Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, November 16, 1950, Volume XXXVI, Number 4, Page 1, Column 2, “A. W. McLaughlin Services Held Here Monday—County Auditor Stricken With Heart Attack; Dies Saturday Afternoon.” Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Christian Church here for Albert W. MCLAUGHLIN, lifelong local resident and auditor of Greene County. Rev. Jack MASTERS officiated at the services and special music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Courtland M. CHAMBERS accompanied by Mrs. Orval D. HUNTER at the piano. Members of the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge conducted graveside rites at Grandview Cemetery. Mr. MCLAUGHLIN, who on Tuesday was elected treasurer of Greene County for the coming two years term of that office, was suddenly stricken Saturday and died shortly after being admitted to the Freeman Greene County Hospital in Linton. Death which was attributed to a heart attack came at 5 o’clock. Born in Greene County on August 2, 1887, he was the son of Robert and Kathryn (BURCHAM) MCLAUGHLIN. He had spent his entire life in Bloomfield where for 30 years he had been engaged in the grocery business. He had served as president of the Bloomfield Production Credit Association here for eight years, and as president of the National Farm Loan Association office here for seven years. An active worker in the Republican party, Mr. MCLAUGHLIN was concluding his eighth year as county auditor at the time of his death. On January 1, he would have been sworn in as county treasurer had he lived. He was a member of the local Christian Church, of the K. of P. Lodge, the Masonic Lodge, and the Scottish Rite. Surviving him are the wife, Mrs. Bess MCLAUGHLIN; two daughters, Mrs. Robert CROSS, of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Joe MARMON, of Indianapolis, and four grandchildren. The Lester Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the final arrangements. — Link to the Obituary of his father, William Robert MCLAUGHLIN [1856IN—1912IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=4666 — Link to the Obituary of his Grandfather, Joseph MCLAUGHLIN [1801IRE—1896IN]: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene&m=3622 — Link to the Obituary of his Uncle, George E. Surnames: ANDERSON, BURCHAM, EDWARDS, HODGES, LAWHEAD, MCLAUGHLIN Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4666 Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, June 12, 1912, Volume LI, Number 24, Page 1, Columns 4 & 5, “William Robert McLaughlin.” The subject to this memoir was born in Center township, Greene County, Indiana, March 13, 1856 and departed this life at his late home at this city, Monday morning June 10, 1912, age 56 years 2 months and 17 days. Robert, as he was familiarly known, was the eldest son of the family of eight children of Joseph and Margaret MCLAUGHLIN. Of this family there remain three of his sisters, Mrs. Riley EDWARDS of Smith township, and Mrs. Charles HODGES, of Ridge Farm, Illinois, and two brothers John, of our city and George of Nebraska. The father and mother and the remaining members of the family, in the years past, have gone before. Robert’s first marriage was to Adeline LAWHEAD, November 25th, 1875. Four children were born to this union, one of whom has preceded him to the better world. The surviving members are Dalton and Heston of Bloomfield, and Floe of David City, Nebraska. His second marriage was to Catherine BURCHAM who departed this life a few years later leaving one son Albert of Bloomfield. His third marriage was to Louise ANDERSON, August 5, 1891. No children were born to this union. Robert MCLAUGHLIN was the soul of goodness as is attested by his loved ones, and his large circle of friends. Charity never appealed to him in vain. There was no service within his power that he would not, and did not, grant to those that required or sought it. He will be missed by a large number of the farmers of this community with whom he transacted business in the purchase and selling of stock. These men who dealt with him ever held him in high regard as a man of absolute honor and honesty. Kindness marked his relation to his family and relatives. In his death there has come to them the loss of a good husband, a fond father and a dear friend. The community has lost a good and useful citizen. The sympathy of all who knew him goes out to the bereaved in their loss and sorrow. May the Good Father who ever is able and willing to bring consolations in our hours of trial, graciously remember this family and friends and deal with them in his watchless way, through his infinite mercy and love. May we all in kindest charity inter with his mortal remain this day whatever of faults he may have held in common with our poor humanity, and may we earnestly strive to retain in our loving remembrance his virtues to emulate them in our own living. The funeral was at the M. E. church by Rev. REIBOLD and Rev. MARSHALL. The remains were taken charge of by Bloomfield Lodge No. 457 I. O. O. F., conveyed to Grand View cemetery where the body was buried by the order. There was a large concourse of relatives and friend of which Mr. MCLAUGHLIN had many. So quickly ended the life of an active, honest and excellent citizen. – Resolutions – We, The Committee on whom was conferred the duty of preparing resolutions of respect and sympathy by Bloomfield Lodge, No. 457, I. O. O. F. on the death of Brother William R. MCLAUGHLIN, beg leave to submit the following report:– Whereas, in the course of nature, death has taken from our midst and association Brother William R. MCLAUGHLIN, and taken the spirit to God who gave it, and We testify to the memory of our deceased Brother, that he was a man active in the affairs of life, faithful to his day and duty, and honest with his fellow men, and a man whose activities and life will be missed in his home, in business and in the Lodge. Resolved that we extend our sympathies to his many relatives and friends, and expresses our respect for his acts and life of kindness and charity. Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes, be published in the papers, and presents to the family. Committee: W. L. SLINKARD, David F. He had been sick for three weeks. All that medical aid and loving hands could do was of no avail. His funeral was the largest ever held in Cincinnati, except that of Kenneth BURCH, the eleven-year old son of Mrs. Nora BURCH, who stepped off the school bus in front of a car and was killed four years ago. Mr. HUDSON’s funeral was conducted by Rev. Logan HATFIELD, of Owensburg. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Hobbieville, and this lodge officiated when he was laid to rest in the Rainbolt Cemetery beside his wife, who died thirteen years ago. The pallbearers were E. A. MEREDITH, N. R. HARDISTY, Theodore CARMICHAEL, Sam LODER, William SCOTT and one other whose name we failed to get. Flower bearers were his six granddaughters. Starling HUDSON spent nearly all his life in Center township and has been one of the outstanding and progressive citizens of the county. He was an honored and upright citizen, always fair with his neighbors, practicing the golden rule throughout his life. He is survived by the following children: Albert HUDSON, Avery HUDSON, Cyrus D. HUDSON, Joseph E. HUDSON, AND Mrs. Savada ARTHUR, all of Center township. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: HUDSON, HOLMES, LEWIS, MCMILLAN, MULLIS, WHITE, YOCKEY Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4663 Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, March 14, 1935, Volume LIX, Number 14, Page 7, Columns 3 & 4, “DEATH’S HARVEST. HUDSON.” Death has again entered our midst and another home has been made sad and lonely and hearts are torn and bleeding and another link has been removed from the family circle of one of our highly respected citizens. Samuel HUDSON, the subject of this sketch, was the last of a family of eleven children born to David and Charlotte (LEWIS) HUDSON. He was born in Center Township, Greene County, Indiana, December 23, 1854, and died at his home near Robison, Indiana, March 5, 1935, aged eighty years, two months and twelve days. When about thirteen years of age he came with his parents to Jackson Township, locating near the place of his death, where he spent almost all of his life. He was married to Margaret YOCKEY, October 4, 1882. To this union eleven children were born, five dying in infancy. The remaining six, with their aged mother, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted father and an affectionate husband. This long wedded life was one of peace and contentment, and for more than fifty-two years they walked hand in hand along life’s rugged pathway, sharing each other’s joys and sorrows, toiling in sunshine and rain, heat and cold, early and late, never giving up to discouragements and adverse circumstances of pioneer life, but pressing on with the determination to win. He not only provided a home for his own family but adopted an orphan girl who mourns his death the same as his own, and his aged father-in-law, and an aged widowed sister were tenderly cared for in their declining years. Mr. HUDSON united with the Methodist Church at Ashcraft Chapel approximately forty years ago. Lived a happy Christian experience for several years. We are told he drifted for a time from the path of righteousness but never lost his faith in his religious experience and like the prodigal son, he saw his mistake and said “I will return unto my father’s house.” He then affiliated with the Pentecost Church, remaining there until death. Mr. HUDSON had been in failing health for several years but was confined to his bed but a few days. His suffering was great but borne with Christian fortitude, and he expressed his readiness to go when the “Master calleth.” The writer has known him for almost half a century, and when as a clerk in a general store in which he was a regular customer always found him to be an honest upright man. He was a good neighbor, held in high esteem by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his passing his companion who is now in the twilight of her life, and evening bells are ringing and she, too, is waiting the call of the Master. Six children, namely, Asa, near Robison; Grover, Winchester; Midas, Koleen; Mrs. Ina MULLIS, Mineral; Mrs. Connie MCMILLAN, Newcastle; Mrs. Ed WHITE, Detroit, Michigan, and Mrs. Quince HOLMES (adopted daughter), of Hobbieville; fourteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. TUTTLE, of Linton, at the home Thursday at 1 p.m. and he was laid to rest in the Robinson Cemetery, in sight of the home where he spent almost all of his life. — To the neighbors and friends who so kindly helped us, and Undertaker LEHMAN for his efficient service and Rev. TUTTLE for his consoling words, the family extends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation. THE FAMILY. — NOTES—RLJ: DEATH RECORDS OF GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA, Health Department, E.
