    1. [INGREENE] James Cemetery Indian mound
    2. Fellow genealogists and anyone concerned with preserving our sacred cemeteries, The History Channel and Time Warner are sponsoring a 'Save Our History' grant award for which anyone can go online and cast their vote. Voting ends THIS FRIDAY April 27th, so time is short. We were fortunate that our restoration project was chosen as a finalist. The JCOGS is the only genealogy society or cemetery project to be chosen as one of the five finalists, so I truly hope that you will go to the Time Warner website and cast your vote for the James Cemetery project. If awarded this grant, we will use 100% of the grant to begin installing an antique-style aluminum alloy fence around the perimeter in order to help halt further desecration of this sacred and historic burial ground. You can read more about our James Cemetery project at the Time Warner 'Save Our History' voting website. Please unite with us as a group of genealogists concerned about the ever-increasing destruction of our cemeteries by VOTING for us at the website below. And note also that ANYONE with Internet access can VOTE so please forward this email to your genealogy circle of friends and ask THEM to vote too! Im so looking forward to visiting Greene, Martin, Monroe and Daviess Counties during my visit June 11-16. I have a few ancestors buried in Keller and Gardner Cemetery. My main research will be on John Gardner (b. 31 March 1781 Calvert Co., MD d. 08 March 1858 and buried in Gardner Cemetery. His 1st wife was Elizabeth BREEDEN (b. abt. 1785 d. 24 May 1820 and buried in Keller Cemetery). Im trying to locate any documents, wills, land records or pensions that may still exist that names Elizabeths maiden name to John. Im also searching for Mary (nee TODD) FLOOD who died 24 April 1851, first wife of Henry Flood. Then I have been requested to do a search for any probates or wills of Todd family before 1850. That should cover most of my allotted time for Greene County. That and do some tombstone pictures! I hope to meet you when there! Thank you! 3. The president is mistaken. The e-mail address of the Greene County Historical Society is: [email protected], and continues, as of this posting. The expense of the broad-band internet access ($50 monthly, for the last year) is underwritten by the Nathan Butler Funeral Home, of Worthington. They can be reached at www.forevercare.org. Of course, the president is correct in that we are a volunteer powered, contribution driven organization, which relies upon the generosity of the web community. Additionally, the staffing of the office (27 S. Washington, Bloomfield) would benefit from more volunteers. Any time you can devote would be greatly appreciated! Author: CaroleStClairGrant Surnames: Keys, Gillett, Benham, Shepherd, Sherrow, Laymon, Day, Doyle, Hayes, Smith, Shoptaw, Sinclair, Rampley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/9762/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I visited Hicks Cemetery this week in Greene County. This cemetery is west of Bloomfield on CR275W just off CR200S. You can see the stone driveway go up a hill and out of sight as you approach driving down 200S. To get to Hicks take 231 West (54) out of Bloomfield to 57 S, turn left and go to CR200S. Turn left again and follow the road until it dead ends into 275W. Turn right and right there immediately you can't miss the driveway into the cemetery. There is no sign marking it because this is an abandoned cemetery next to a fenced pasture, surrounded on three sides by farms. I think this is the cemetery that used to be part of the Hicks Presbyterian Church? There are very few headstones left in the cemetery. With the exception of a very few, all of the headstones that are remaining are severely weatherworn and most are illegible. The headstones have been broken and/or vandalized and many have been piled under trees or in piles on the ground. Many stones are lying on the ground, sinking slowly into the earth and becoming buried. I can't say how many burials were in the cemetery by my visit, but there are countless rectangular depressions everywhere, and the ground is spongy under the feet. Someone has left artificial flowers on a few of the graves. I am guessing that at one time there may have been at least 100 burials here. I took pictures of the cemetery and all of the stones. I saw the names Sinclair, Keys, Gillett, Benham, Shepherd, Dugger, Sherrow, Shoptaw, Rampley, Hayes, Smith, Laymon, Day and Doyle. As I said before, some are legible, but most names were just too worn to read. Some stones can be partially read. I have Sinclair relatives buried there.
