I can share more info if I have an email to send files to. But for now; Mattie, or Samantha Shanklin was the dau. of Mary Archer and the elusive Joab/Jacob Shanklin/Shankles. She appears living with that family in the 1860. (MO) and I think even with Nero once? She also appears living with uncle Moses Archer in Greene Co IN in the 1900,I believe. She is listed as an heir in the will of Moses Archer, dating also to 1900. I beleive he gave her the bulk of his estate. She was what we would call nowadays handicapped. His children quite agressively challanged that will. I have copies of this in my files. Samantha then moved to some kind of home where she signed over her portion for her care. She died a few years later in Greene Co IN and her death certificate in the courthouse there lists parents as Mary Archer and Jacob Shanklin.(I do not have a copy of this one file, tho.) This is how I found out that my gg grandfather had a sister named Mary. Samantha is called Mattie in some of these documents. I am guessing that she is named-- sort of-- after Mary's mother Abigail Morris Archer who was also called Mattie. Abigail is called Mattie on the death certificate of Jacob Archer, brother to Mary and Moses. As mentioned, I'd love to email you both, and anyone else interesed, copies of my files on this family. They have more details that those cited from memory here. Moses Archer, uncle to Samantha moved around quite a bit. There are huge gaps to the chronology of his life and that of his whole family that need filling in. The mystery of Mary and where she was merried might provide some clues. Oftentimes these families traveled together back and forth to various locations. For example, I have found Moses in MO, KS, IL and IN-- all info from his penion record and census. I would love any info you have on this family at all, as it may fill in gaps. I tend to collect this stuff and it usually helps a lot. I'll dig out my notes and files tonight Carolyn [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Bill and I are cousins and we cross each others research quite a bit, but I've not heard anything from him about Jacob's line. As Mattie was born in Missouri, I would guess that Jacob and Mary were also married there. There is no record of their marriage in Indiana or Illinois. What I have is that Mattie Samantha Shanklin was born in Missouri abt 1854. She was living with her uncle Abraham Shanklin in Jackson Twp., Greene Co., Indiana in the 1880 Census. 2. JoAnn Rowe
    3. My G-G-G-Grandfather Michael Ryan came to Greene County around 1845 to I believe probably to work on the canal at Newberry. He is on the 1850 census with his wife Amelia and my G-G-Grandmother Mary Ann Ryan and by the 1860 census Amelia is in Martin County remarried. I bought a book on the Indiana Canals and it says that there was a bad cholera outbreak while they were working on the canal and my guess is that he died at that time. Has anyone read about this and where these people may have been buried. I have never located his grave. JoAnn

I talked about a Richard A. Puckett, 1830-1896. His wife was Matilda Lawson Puckett. Her parents were William Lawson and Delilah Frye. I figure Delilah Frye was my wife's GGG-Grandmother. The time period when she lived straddled 1780 to 1850. (That William Lawson was my wife's GGG-Grandfather. I have the same name, William Lawson. I tell my wife "I Came Back.)" Our genealogy of them has hit a brick wall. Her G-Grandfather was Richard A. Puckett, born about 1830. We cannot find his parents with certainty. One reference says they probably were Richard Puckett and Rebecca Cleaver. I found a marriage with those names in Patrick County, VA, in 1830. Our Pucketts lived in that county back then. The minister who married them has the same name as the minister who married other members of our family back then. No other traces of either family were found until I surfed to the Burch family in Indiana. The names Richard Puckett and Rebecca Cleaver are mentioned there, but, no mention is made of a son named Richard, only four daughters. Our Richard A. Puckett was born about the same time that the Richard and Rebecca were married, in the same community. The fact that they cannot be found there led us to suspect our ancestor moved away shortly after. Now, I find the Indiana Pucketts died in between the censuses of 1! 830 and 1840. I also learn that some Burch family members in the Greene County, IN locale have ties back to Surry County, NC and Pittsylvania County, VA. That is not too far from where we are searching. In fact, we still live close by, in Rockingham County, NC, where there are hundreds of Pucketts in our extended family! I know I am responding to old message board entries. If any Pucketts, or Cleavers, or Burches can fill in the blanks for me, I would be forever grateful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
