In 1900, my ggrandmother, who was 16 years old at the time, migrated with her many siblings and parents from Birmingham Alabama to Linton Indiana so that her father could work in the coal mines. I'm sure that many miners with large families, migrating in from Ohio, Alabama, and other places had no money for train tickets so had to use their own legs and a wagon. On the other hand, my husband's ggrandfather was a telegrapher for the railroad so that family had the luxury of traveling on trains, as well as owning railroad stock. Bonnie, travel wasd not by wagon in 1901. The railroads were built in the 1850's and most place's were available in the same day. Railroads run 24/7 and if you worked for the railroads it was free. My family often went home on the morning train and came back on the evening train. Bodies were shipped by freight, it just took two people to move the casket, and these people worked for the railroad. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2007 3:00 AM Subject: INGREENE Digest, Vol 2, Issue 146 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. My 2nd great-grandparents are Hiram Page and Matilda Brewer. I have Matilda's death certificate, and it shows she died in 1912, and is buried at Bethel Cemetery in Greene County. My problem is Hiram. I can't seem to locate a death certificate on him. Family lore has him buried at Bethel with Matilda, but I couldn't locate his grave. Perhaps the headstone is missing. The Greene County death index shows that this Hiram Page did not die in Greene County, as he is not on the listing. The death date I have for him is 15 June 1901. One source says he died in Greene County, OH. If he died in OH, how can he be buried at Bethel? Is it possible for him to have died in Greene County, OH, and for his body to be shipped home for a burial in Bethel, in Greene County, IN? This sounds kind of far-fetched to me, as travel was by wagon. Can anyone help me clear up this mystery? Thanks for your help. In the 1900 census, William Sponsler is living in the next county south, Martin County, IN, Halbert Township. He is age 82, born in Ohio and moved to Indiana. 1900 Census, Series T623, Roll 392, page 64. Most likely the railroad had him pick up mail or do a job there for them. There was never any town there and he may not have owned land there, either. He was in his 70's when they gave him the job. If you check the 1900 census in Martin County, you might be able to find out whom he is living with at age 82. That area would never have been incorporated because of its small size. It was next to the Oak Grove Church, which has been gone for years. This church was founded by John Edmonson, who along with his wife, Sarah Grayson, daughter Mary Angeline Puckett, Son-in-Law George Puckett, are all buried there. These were some of my ancestors. I have visited the cemetery on two occasions. Some one places American flags on the graves of veterans on holidays, so records do exist somewhere. The cemetery sits a few feet above the road, which is very narrow and thus, no place to park a car. The cemetery does seem to be mowed on a periodic basis. There is a mobile home immediately adjacent (south) to the old burial plot and the cemetery is now privately owned. I know this as the last time I was there I was told to get out! The person was not interested in hearing why I was there. That was a few years back and I have never gotten around to pursuing ownership. The Green County Ceme! tery books, as I recall, do not list Oak Grove (the original and only name associated) in any of the three volumes. The location is in Greene County as it lies 200 yards south of Greene County Road 1000N. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great grandfather Richard Sponsler is in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Greene County. The following children are listed Susan, Lucy, Henry, Mary E., Margaret and Lizzie. A 15 year old Jonas Sponsler was living with him in the 1850 census, but he is too old to be his son. Richard owned a farm near Midland. He was married to Lucinda Jones in Tuscarawas county Ohio in 1844. Lucinda died or they were divorced shortly after 1860. We are not sure. We did see a reference to Lucinda's death in 1863 in a book by a man named Bonham, and according to the book she is buried in Lebanon cemetery near Midland, but we have never seen her name in an index of interments. Richard married Emily A. Smith Rogers thereafter, but we cannot find a marriage record for Richard and Emily or a death or cemetery record for Lucinda. We believe Emily was born in Indiana about 1839-40. We believe Emily's mothers maiden name was Elex! son. Emily was first married to a Davis E. Rogers who died in the civil war. She had a son named Davis E. Rogers, Jr. In 1862 Richard sold his Greene county farm and they moved to Illinois settling in Springfield until thier deaths. A railroad stop and former coal tipple is in Greene County named Sponsler. It is on the Indiana and county official maps, but nothing is there today...maybe a couple of houses and a cemetery. There is an old coal slurry pond called the Sponsler pond also in that area. According to land records I looked at in the Greene co. courthouse, no Sponsler ever owned land in that area, so I have no idea why it bears that name. IN` Diane, I've been searching many years for the Old Father Griffith Cemetery in Green Co. It is located near the mouth of the Eel River. This found in an old family letter about the burial of my 3rd great-grandfather, Benjamin Walker. He was living with his daughter Elizabeth Walker Howard (husband Jonathan-occup. carder). She wrote to her brothers, George, Aquilla and Jesse Walker in KY, from "Springvill L.C.Perry Twp.(I think L.C. stands for Lawrence Co which was or is part of Green Co. She said, "Our fathere left us the 23 of April, 1851. He died while walking in the lane. Fathere died in peace in his 98th year and I took him out and beried him in the old Fathere Griffin Graveyard at the mouth of the Eel Rivere. I beried him next to mothere". I have never found the name of Benjamin's wife except for the name Frances. There had been an epidemic in those parts in 1849-50 which may have caused her death. Elizabeth went on to tell her brothers that she had lost their daughter Harriot in August, 1851 and left her little babe. Her sons Jonathan and Benjimon--she wrote--have gone to the Misury Country. (Missouri) If you have the cemetery directories, would you please see if there is a Benjamin Walker and wife buried at Fathere Griffin Cemetery? I would be so grateful. While in his teen age, and having a desire to see other parts of the country, during the covered wagon days he went with some relatives to Kansas. After a short time in Kansas, his desire for seeing more of the country and seeking better opportunities and a different climate, he went to Wisconsin and for a few months worked in the timber. Still possessed with that roaming disposition he went to California and again worked in timber. Not finding California his ideal state, he went to Oregon and homesteaded and improved a tract of land, at that place he lived 52 years. That section of Oregon was very sparsely settled, was heavily timbered and inhabited by deer, bear, buffalo, and other wild game and the streams stocked with fish, all of which was pleasing to his fancy. In the summer he gardened and prospected for gold and in hunting season he trapped and fished. Truly he was a typical mountaineer. He never was married and lived a lonely life. During his many years in the west, he visited his native state twice. He appreciated getting letters from relatives and friends and as there was not way of transportation he walked seventeen miles for his mail and groceries. In 1937 his nephew, Ed HORN visited him and found him in very poor health. Being so far from medical aid and relatives, plans were made and carried out and the nephew went by automobile and brought him to Indiana. He was given the best of medical attendance and a home and board provided him with his sister, Mrs. Tom SPARKS and Mr. SPARKS. In a short time Mrs. SPARKS passed away and this sympathetic generous hearted nephew removed him to his home in Illinois, where he was admitted to the St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. This nephew deserves much praise for his devotion and untiring interest in his aged uncle. The body was prepared for burial in Illinois and accompanied by the nephew, was brought Wednesday to the Lehman Funeral establishment where it lay in state until Friday, then brought to Ashcraft Chapel Cemetery for burial. - Link to the Obituary of his father, Sampson HORN [1837OH-1919IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/3107/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his mother, Julia Ann Adeline (HARDESTY) HORN [1845OH-1923IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/3680/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, Steven Austin HORN [1865IN-1936IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/5026/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his sister, Rachel HORN [1878IN-1935IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/6015/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, James Frank HORN [1882IN-1949IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/5996/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his nephew, Edward S.
