    1. Missing Cunningham Family
    2. We am searching for the parents and siblings of our Great Grandmother, Rebecca Cunningham. She married Lemuel Franklin Eastes abt 1856/7. In the 1860 Census for Van Buren Twp, Madison Co., IN shows Rebecca age 20 and Lemuel age 22. This would place Rebecca’s birth abt 1840. Also the 1860 IN Census shows 2 more Rebecca Cunninghams in Hancock Co. - One in Green Twp and one in Brown Twp They had four sons and one daughter. Jasper Newton Eastes b: 3 March 1858, Prob. WI Charles Everett Eastes b: 18 June 1864 Prob.; WI William Holman Eastes b: 7 May 1867 - WI Anna Belle Eastes B; date unknown Joseph Frank Eastes b: 9 May 1875 - Born in WI according to family and on death certificate. Rebecca Cunningham was killed in a tragic accident 26 December 1878. She was killed when thrown from a mud boat on the Bradford Pike northeast of Marion, Indiana in Grant County. Our grandfather, Joseph Frank, her youngest son was 3 1/2 years old. Lemuel died 11 may 1903 in Landessville, Grant Co., IN In July 1977 the headstones were missing from both Rebecca's and Lemuel's graves in Tinkle Cemetery. However, I have a photo of Lemuels stone with dates. Rebecca was buried next to him. I have been told recently that Lemuel’s grave is now marked with a Military Stone. When the Civil War began, Lemuel was enlisted by Capt. Alfred Kilgore at Muncie, Indiana on 21 August 1861. He enlisted as a Private for 3 years in the Army of the United States . On the same day he joined his new unit and was assigned to Capt Hugh A. Stephens, Company B, 36th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry Volunteers. At the time of enlistment he was 25 years old, light complexion and had blue eyes. He was married and had one son, Jasper Newton. Lemuel was given an Honorable Disability Discharge on 7 May 1863 at Murfreesbrough, Tennessee. On his Discharge Certificate his home address was given as Chesterfield, Indiana. Since Lemuel was an Honorably Discharged Disabled Veteran, he was given a pension. The date of his death is confirmed as being on 11 May 1903 and was last paid $17.00 on 4 May 1903. A Disability Certificate dated 29 February 1888 shows his home in New Corner, Indiana, (later know as Gaston) in Delaware County. The certificate further states that due to illness contracted in Military Service he was now certified as being totally unable to work at his occupation as a farmer and blacksmith According to his obituary Lemuel was a Master Mason and prominent in the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) and was the Post Master at Landissville for many years. We would appreciate any information on any Cunningham family that could be related. 2. I have tried everything I can think of to get to the birth/death index and keep getting "no dns entry". I've tried using both urls that have been posted to no avail. I would like to know how is was first located as I might be able to find it that way. There is no link on the Grant Co genweb page. Thanks for the help. 3. Does anyone on the list know about the history of how the town of Landess, Indiana was named? I am researching my Landess family. I know they were born in Indiana but do not as yet have a county. I have a copy of the article on Landess Indiana which does not contain the above information. I went to the Grant County Death record site and found a Landess E. Armstrong born 11-5-24, his mother was Lily Landess. My family was a couple generations back from Landess E. Armstrong so it could be Lily's Father's generation. Does anyone have information on this family? Is there a genealogical society in Grant County that I could contact? Thank you Sharon M. Bledsoe

William Landess has a general store. There is a barber shop, a saw-mill, and the usual showing at a railroad station; also a postoffice." Also, on page 437 - "Dr. G. A. Landess came here in 1883." 3. You have to type the URL exactly, I found. http://www.GrantCounty.net Capitalize the G and C of GrantCounty. Birth records are only recent, but the death records include some folks born in the late 1800s and include parents' names if they were known at the time. I was not able to locate anything for James and Minnie (Jeffries) Tomlins(on) who lived in Gas City in 1904 so I guess they must have moved elsewhere. I am still searching for Minnie who was my gg-grandmother. Annette netandmike@nni.com

    1. HEATHS, John and John Calvin, KELLUM - Elizabeth, SHAFFER - Effie
    2. Jim Heath
    3. I am looking for descendents of John and Euphemia SHAFFER HEATH. They were married in Tuscarawas Co., OH in 1838 or 1839 and moved to Owen Co., IN by 1850. They had a number of children, Jemima, John Calvin, Peter, Francis, Hannah, Delila, James M. (Madison?), Susan and Tabitha. John was a school teacher for at least a while. I believe may have run across some of Euphemia's kin in Clay and Owen Co., but don't have their names in front of me. After Euphemia died in 1861, John HEATH married Elizabeth KELLUM and they had some more children. Peter HEATH died in a Confederate POW camp during the war. Francis and James M. HEATH had farms near their father in 1870. I am most interested in descendents of John Calvin HEATH since he was my g-grandfather. He married a Mary BOWMAN (possibly BEAMAN) in 1864. Their son, Maryfield was my grandfather. I believe they had another son, Marion, who died in Belle Union, Putnam Co., IN in the 20s or 30s. Mary died in 1867 and John C. left Maryfield with his sister, Hannah HEATH McCULLOUGH and her husband William Henry McCULLOUGH. I have no idea what became of Marion between this time and when he turned up in Belle Union. Family legend says that John C. HEATH then went off to Gas City, IN, remarried and had another family. I'm sure about the other family, but haven't been able to find out anything about them. I believe Mary BOWMAN was the daughter of John and Nancy BOWMAN who lived near John HEATH's farm in the 1860 census and had a daughter Mary aged 15 in 1860. I'm told John C. and Mary HEATH's marriage license says BEAMAN for her father, but haven't actually seen it myself. If you are related to this crew, I would appreciate hearing from you. I expect there was a family Bible, since John HEATH was a school teacher, but my branch of the family didn't get it. Does anyone know if there was a generally accepted way these were passed to the next generation? I would guess the eldest son got it. Did each couple buy their own Bible and start records when they got married? Thank you for your time and attention. Jim Heath "All these moments will vanish in time, like tears in rain." 3. Betty, Haven't gotten anything yet. It has been 3 1/2 months since I wrote to the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. The person I talked to on the phone said it would take awhile to get his papers and that I should send my request to the local VA office closest to me which is in Houston. Is 3 1/2 months too long to have to wait? If so, I will get another letter off to them right away. Thanks for checking up on the situation.
