I am researching the migration of the descendants of Richard and William INGRAM from Johnston Co NC prior to 1810. I have access to the NC Archives and to the Johnston Co History Room and have accumulated quite a bit of information so far. Some of their descendants stayed in Johnston Co, but many moved on to SC, TN or GA, particularly following the Revolution. Any help or collaboration will be welcomed. Please note that some of what I say below may not be exactly right because I am not checking my notes, but it sketches in broad strokes my research interests. Richard INGRAM died in Johnston Co NC about 1781. I assume that he was elderly at the time of his death because he had been exempted from carrying arms due to his age. William INGRAM died in Johnston Co NC about 1771. Both left Wills. In addition to tracking migration of their descendants, puzzles that I am interested in, but not optimistic about, solving are: (1) Where did Richard and/or William INGRAM come from when they showed up in Johnston Co NC fairly early in it's history? (Johnston Co was formed in 1746.) Among INGRAM researchers, there are differing opinions about where either of them came from. I am aware of no proof for any of the theories except for the similarity of given names of the known children of possible ancestors. Unfortunately, more than one candidate meets this criteria. This is particularly true if one does not assume that Richard and William were brothers. (2) Were William and Richard related? If so, how? The records that I have studied provide considerable circumstantial evidence to conclude that their children were closely connected. Was this because of blood or simply geographical proximity? As to my own INGRAM line, I descend from Richard INGRAM and from Thomas AVERA. Thomas died Johnston Co NC about 1761. (I conclude that Thomas was relatively young when he died because his wife was pregnant with his 11th known child.) Three of Richard INGRAM's children married three of Thomas AVERA's children . Two of these INGRAM/AVERA marriages are beyond dispute, but the marriage of my own direct INGRAM ancestor (John INGRAM) to Mary AVERA has not been proven. That John married Mary AVERA has been asserted by earlier INGRAM researchers, and I have no reason to assume otherwise. John INGRAM died relatively young, actually not long after his father's death around 1781. He left no Will. His wife (Mary AVERA INGRAM) survived him, but under the laws of the day their two youngest children, Thomas INGRAM and John INGRAM, were declared orphans. Later, John petitioned the Court to make Thomas his Guardian. Then by about 1800 both Thomas and John went to Lincoln Co GA. There they married daughters of Hezikiah BUSSEY. Later, both Thomas and John, along with their BUSSEY wives, moved to Putnam Co GA where they subsequently died. Both left Wills and a number of descendants. Thomas for sure also left land in AL to some of his heirs, and he had previously given at least one of his sons land in AL, all of which is recorded in Thomas's Will. Thomas and John INGRAM moved to Lincoln Co GA in the company of their Uncle Samuel AVERA and their Aunt Zilpha INGRAM AVERA. (Another of the three INGRAM/AVERA marriages) If they did not accompany Samuel and Zilpha to GA they certainly arrived at about the same time. Two other sons of Thomas AVERA, Isaac and Arthur, were already in Wilkes/Lincoln Co GA before 1800. I descend from the John INGRAM/Nancy BUSSEY union. Their son, John F. [Francis or Franklin] INGRAM married Mary HATHORN and their son, Jefferson Franklin (J. F.) INGRAM (buried in Harris Co GA), is my grandfather. J. F. INGRAM married Ida Blanche RITCH (buried in Muscogee Co GA). Ida was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson RITCH and Julia Amanda HARRIS, whose parents were Gray HARRIS and Nancy FULLER.
