FROM NOW ON, I WILL BE POSTING THESE SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THE LIST WHEN I KNOW THAT THEY ARE ALREADY SUBSCRIBED. ***************************************************************** NEVER SEND THIS ARTICLE TO A MAILING LIST. IT IS RUDE TO DO SO. ***************************************************************** VIRUS WARNING. We are grateful to <FCHarri@aol.com> for passing along this virus warning. WASHINGTON, D.C. The Institute for the Investigation of Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to believe without question every groundless story, legend, and dire warning that shows up in their inbox or on their browser. The Gullibility Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and forward copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, e-mail viruses, taxes on modems, and get-rich-quick schemes. "These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery tickets based on fortune cookie numbers," a spokesman said. "Most are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if told to them by a stranger on a street corner." However, once these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe anything they read on the Internet. "My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone," reported one weeping victim. "I believe every warning message and sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages are anonymous." Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the virus must be true." It was a long time, the victim said, before she could stand up at a Hoaxes Anonymous meeting and state, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed." Now, however, she is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she says. Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the virus, which include the following: the willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking; the urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others; and a lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a story is true T. C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost all shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using shampoo." When told about the Gullibility Virus, T. C. said he would stop reading e-mail, so that he would not become infected. Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately. Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet community. Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there is on-line help from many sources, including Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html Symantec Anti Virus Research Center at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List at http://www.mcafee.com/support/hoax.asp Dr. Solomon's Hoax Page at http://www.drsolomons.com/vircen/vanalyse/va005.html The Urban Legends Archive at http://www.urbanlegends.com Urban Legends Reference Pages at http://www.snopes.com Datafellows Hoax Warnings at http://www.Europe.Datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate themselves against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on evaluating sources, such as Evaluating Internet Research Sources at http://www.sccu.edu/faculty/R_Harris/evalu8it.htm Evaluation of Information Sources at http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~agsmith/evaln/evaln.htm Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources at http://refserver.lib.vt.edu/libinst/critTHINK.HTM Sandra [T.YLER] D.UNCAN purplevw @ sl.net {ôçô} SURNAMES may or may not be documented (ô¿ô) SEEN AT: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/3577 PROUD SPONSOR OF ROOTSWEB AS OF 11 SEP 1997 & 5 JAN 1998 Support RootsWeb! 2. Shirley
    3. Due to overwhelming popularity of the cookbook project undertaken recently by the Homespun mailing list -- and in response to scores of requests -- Homespun and the Country-Kitchen are pleased and excited to announce we are now compiling a second volume. It will have all new recipes and differs from the first in that holiday traditions will be included, which may be short essays up to 150 words and applies to any holiday celebrated around the world. Each item will include the submitter's name, city and state of residence. As with our first project, all proceeds will be used to support Rootsweb. Our first edition netted over $4,000 for them. Our goal for the second volume is to reach at least $5,000. With your support, we can achieve this! Recipes and holiday traditions for the book are being solicited through June 19, 1998, on our website at: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/7186/form.html Orders may be placed when a recipe is submitted from there, or directly at: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/7186/order.html If you do not have Internet access, you may email recipe and tradition submittals to: hcookbook@webtv.net Again, if you do not have Internet access orders only may be emailed to the following address: saundrak@m7.sprynet.com When emailing your submittal or order, please be sure to specify VOLUME 2 RECIPE or VOLUMEN 2 ORDER in the subject line. Books are $10 each, including tax and postage (US$13 for orders to Canada and Australia; pricing for other countries will be determined if orders are received). Payment must be by check or money order and received no later than July 10, 1998 (postdated checks cannot be accepted). We cannot process credit card orders. Payment not received by July 10 will result in an order being cancelled as the publisher requires their money when the order is placed (and the bank will hold out-of-state checks up to two weeks to clear). 1. Ingram Family
    2. Cori Denbaum
    3. I posted this message about a week ago, and I didn't get any positive responses. I'm reposting it in the hope that someone new will be able to identify my family's background. I am researching my family's genealogy and I have come across the name William Dixon Ingram. His information is as follows: |William Dixon Ingram |(s)Patsy Liles |-----|William Bernard Ingram |-----|(s)Cornelia Martha Crouch |-----|-----|Nicolas Dixon Ingram (July 7, 1865-March 17, 1941) |-----|-----|(s) Mary "Mollie" Florence Seago (Feb 5, 1870-Sept. 1936) There are no dates for William Dixon or William Bernard or their wives. Nicholas Dixon Ingram and Mollie Seago lived in Lilesville, NC, in Anson Co. It is my hypothesis that the two Williams lived there as well, but they could have also lived in the surrounding areas. Any information would be helpful. Thank you. Sincerely Yours, Cori

    3. These people are the "supposed' Parents of my Uriah INGRAM who lived in Plymouth, Schuyler County IL in the mid 1800s. Uriah was born abou 1814 in "Carntuckey", (listed on his IL marriage cert to Permelia BOX) but I just noticed a town in IL called "Kaintuck"......could he have meant a silly named town rather than a state? Someone told me that Uriahs parents were John and Sarah INGRAM. Uriah was born about 1814 in KY. That is the only history I have on him. The BOX family was from KY too. If anyone can help...please do! Valerie

    3. Hello; This is a friendly reminder to please post your data. Lately, I have been receiving many, many messages for persons who want to subscribe, but about half of them are "ALREADY" on the mailing list. So, I have decided that the reason is that persons think they are no longer subscribed and so are (re)subscribing. Some of these lists are very slow, and there has been a major slowdown of posting lately. Please, if you believe you are no longer subscribed, why not post a name, with a data and a place, (if you have it). If you receive your message back within 24 hours, YOU ARE DEFINITELY SUBSCRIBED. If you do get unsubscribed, you will receive an unsubscription message. CAN WE PLEASE TRY TO MAKE EVERY POST COUNT??? My apologies to those many persons on this list that are not resubscribing over and over again. Thanks for being nearly perfect subscribers. 1. INGRAM, Joseph Gaston VA or NC? b. 1771
    2. CAPTIVA96
    3. Joseph Gaston Ingram according to tombstone was born in 1771 and died in 1871 at the age of 110. He is buried in the Ingraham Cemetary in Covington County, MS. He was supposedly married three time and had at least twenty children (possible even thirty). I theorized that he might have been born in Southampton, VA near Lake Gaston, but who knows. Others in family say that they thought he was from Tar Heel, NC. He moved to AL-Sumter County by 1840 and was living in Mississippi 1850. He was a methodist circuit preacher. Any leads would be appreciated. Chris Summers CAPTIVA96@aol.com

    2. S.E.T. D.UNCAN
    3. Hello, Cyril; Yes, but I have FREEMAN and DUNCAN. With full knowledge of what I was doing, I bought the DUNCAN book and my husband, sensitive to my genealogical leanings, bought me the FREEMAN book at a flea-market for $10.00. (No FREEMAN in our lines <G>). They one and the same. For some who are knowledgeable, if you purchase this book on a credit card, you have the right to return it within 30 days. This was discussed on one other mailing list that I was subscribed to and the company (HALBERTS I believe) changed their marketing to reflect that this was not a book on "YOUR" specific genealogy. But, they did so because someone with some clout, began to pressure them for their shoddy advertising tactics. However, when the ad for DUNCAN crossed my desk, I could see why "Jane and John American Public" might believe that they were going to get their family tree in a book for $40.00. After all, if your BLOUNT book is anything like my FREEMAN & DUNCAN book, you do have one heck-of-an address book devoted to BLOUNTs of the world. So sorry you were taken in. Let the buyer beware!!! I have just visited your website and checked out the family indicated, and certainly is the right timeframe. Not sure how to proceed to try and determine a connection, so welcome any ideas. A couple of things that might serve as clues one way or the other...our Rachel INGRAM's husband, Thomas SHREVE, was the son of Samuel and Sophia SHREVE and grandson of Caleb SHREVE and Hannah THORN of Burlington Co, NJ. These families were all longtime Quakers and in the case of Shreve's and Thorn's early colonists in Mass, Rhode Island and Long Island, New York. Samuel SHREVE fought in the revolution as did some of his relatives in Burlington Co. They were all disowned by Society of Friends for fighting and many of these ended up going to Pennsylvania. The Shreve genealogy book says that Caleb Shreve, the grandfather, died in Bedford Co, PA 8 Feb 1810, and that the father Samuel Shreve died in Fayette Co, PA in 1790, although have found no confirming evidence of this. Samuel's cousins, Israel Shreve and his brother and son, both also named Samuel, all were rev vets and moved to the same area, apparently going closely after the war ended. Sophia and her children all went down the Ohio River, sometime before 1820 is all we have heard, and settled in what is now Brown Co, Ohio. One son James went back to Venango Co, PA and remained there. Don't know where Rachel INGRAM and Thomas SHREVE were married, but the date given was 9 Jan 1811. Nine children born starting in 1813. Enclosing family group sheet below as maybe names of children's spouses will provide clues. There is also a reference from History of Fayette Co, PA on a John Ingram who was an indentured servant in 1770 Anyway, I don't believe that they ever sought reinstatement to Quakers. I don't know what happened to those who were disowned at that time, whether or not they still lived around and interacted with active Quakers. Wish I had more to go on! While in the employ of Wm. Crawford in 1770 as an indentured servant, murdered Indian Stephen, a friend of Crawford. While being sent to Gov. Penn. for punishment, he escaped and was never heard from afterwards. Pretty interesting stuff, huh? The name is given 3 different spellings in the index. There is no listing for Thomas Shrieve(Shreve) , but there is for Samuel, (pp.710-712, 716). Sam was Lt.Col. of the First Batallion of New Jersey in the Continental line. He was the brother of Col. Israel Shreve. The Col. had a son Sam who settled in what is now the twp. of Perry in Fayette Co. and was one of the original proprietors of the town of Perryopolis. Their land was bought from George Washington. The Proprietors bought the land for the town from a George Meason, which is one of my lines. 3. Hi Jay, When I first posted my search for Uriah INGRAM b about 1814 in KY, who went to IL, I got the following messages. I got a message a while back from Lyle, that there was a URIAH INGRAM b about 1750 in MD? who moved to VA and then to KY by 1788 (Wvlyle@aol.com) This URIAH"s father was Abraham INGRAM who married Rhoda Collins. (common first names included Rachel, Uriah, Abraham, William, Eleanor, Jacob, Comfort, John, Jobe, Isaac, Benjamin, Naomi, Thomas, Elizabeth) Jay, this information could very well include my John b about 1780 who had a son Uriah in KY. I also suppose your JOHN (in the family chart below) could be the father of my Uriah who was b about 1814. Did any of your INGRAMS come to KY? Another poster said his John INGRAM (about the same date) was found in Clarke Co KY. (but i have lost his email..if you are out there, could you please reply?) I just have a feeling these KY INGRAMs are related somehow. Also.....egals@jps.net (Terry) is searching for a Rachel INGRAM b 1784 who ended up in Ohio, across the river from Mason Co KY. Rachels father was said to be John INGRAM. Hope we can put this all together.... 1. RESUBSCRIPTION ERRORS???
    2. S.E.T. D.UNCAN
    3. Hello list subscribers; This morning, I received a message from a lady that could not have come at a better time. She apologized for subscribing twice. For some time now, I have noticed that subscription notices will cross my desk that say...already subscribed. Now, I am almost as new at this as some of you, so I just ignored them, thinking it was the persnickety INTERNET or whatever. Lately, all of the lists have been slow and for many different reasons. Brian & Karen are still working with the archives, trying to make it all better for all of us, and sometimes, that involves holding messages back for a day or two. Other times, there can be power outages that hold our messages in the thin air??? OK, so I really do not know why things get slow. There are even times when a message floats somewhere in the air for a week and no one knows why. Lately, there has not been much activity on some of the lists and then it seems to surge. IMPORTANT: Because I had a large rash of "already subscribed" messages cross my desk, I went to the teckkie guys and this is what I learned: Sometimes, people subscribe to mailing lists and do not know anything about how they work unless I tell them. However, with over 2000 + persons subscribed to my lists, it is not always possible to tell everyone every thing all of the time. If you are new, there is a mailing list called, NEWBIE-L or NEWBY-L that you may want to join until you are feeling more secure. As I understand it, you are not only allowed to make dumb mistakes, you are also allowed and encouraged to ask dumb questions. Other than that, this is a new guideline that I am proposing... NOTE: THIS IS THE POINT OF THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE..... If you want to know if you are still subscribed to the list, and you are thinking about resubscribing, remember, when you resubscribe, the list always sends me a notice that a person is subscribing who is already on the list. SO...instead of subscribing AGAIN, just send the list a post about your family. That way, you will receive a copy and I will not have to alert you that the list is slow and that you are still subscribed. To see a list of the available lists, go to: http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html To see the best list of genealogy links, go to: http://www.CyndisList.com/ Please feel free to contact me should you have further questions about anything. 1. [INGRAM-L] My Ingram, or Ingraham Family
    2. Bill Brewer
    3. Every so often I think it is a good idea for all of us to restate what we know about our families, so with that thought in mind, here goes again: My Arthur Ingram, or Ingraham (and I've found it spelled both ways, sometimes in the same document) first appears for certain in 1817 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He took out and completed naturalization papers there in 1817, listing Indiana Township as his present residence and Belfast, Ireland as his birthplace. A deed also shows him purchasing land in Indiana township the same year. Family tradition states that he had originally migrated from Ireland to New York and that he became a sea captain, was captured by the British during the Revolution and spent eleven years in captivity before managing to escape and arriving in Pennsylvania. Obviously, the time period involved would seem to make such a story impossible. However, keeping in mind that family tradition often has some basis in fact, I have wondered if perhaps part of the story is true, that he was maybe a seaman of some rank in the War of 1812, or was impressed sometime by the British (after all, until taking out naturalization papers in 1817, he would have been a British subject), deserted whatever British ship he found himself on, and ended up in Pennsylvania in 1817. But...where did he get the money to purchase land? In any event, he seems to have prospered in Indiana township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, since when he died in about 1852, his will left a substanial estate to his children. They were, all named in the will: Arthur b. 1823, Thomas b. 1824, David b. 1825, William John b. 1827, Henry b. 1830, and Sarah Ann b. 1832. Arthur Jr married Mary Wible about 1852 and had at least one son, named for Arthur Jr.'s younger brother, William John. This son moved to Kansas. Arthur Jr. himself lived a very interesting and active life, going to California with his brother William during the Gold Rush, and having a fight with a bear on the trip, which resulted in the limited use of his right arm from that time on. When he was in his sixties, he went to Alaska and perished of starvation on an ill-fated trip in the Yukon Country. William John Ingram, son of Arthur and Sarah, married Mary Ann Silvey in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on 24 Jul 1851. Almost immediately, they moved to Morgan County, Ohio, where my great-grandmother, Loretta Jane Ingram was born in 1863. After the Civil War, they moved to Calloway County, Missouri, and then, by 1888 to Lyon County, Kansas, where Loretta Jane married John Willard Brewer. Loretta Jane and John Willard were my great-grandparents. If any of this connects with any family of yours, or any family you've heard of, I'd like very much to hear from you. I'll be happy to exchange information.

(: February was an incredible month: El Nino storms repeatedly caused us to lose power, and I wound up having to 4-wheel- drive off the mountain in a snowstorm to find and buy a generator to keep RootsWeb online. Because of our batteries and our generator, we were down only minutes even though the power was off for days. Also, Cyndi Howells' Website moved to RootsWeb right in the middle of the storms and the USGenWeb query system needed more CPU cycles and bandwidth, so we added a server and load balanced our T1 connections to the Internet right in the midst of all the snowfalls and power outages. The executive summary is that we had about 11% absolute growth during just the month of February, but that's deceptively low because February is a short month. Our actual *daily* load increased about 20%: o 29,372,613 Web files (27,751,946 in Jan) from 2,488 Websites (2,400 in Jan). - 8,602,112 were HTML pages (not images or cgi-bin) (8,308,561 in Jan). - 3,446,096 were cgi-bin database searches and such. (3,574,701 in Jan). - 17,248,967 were GIFs (15,850,655) or JPEGs (1,398,312) (15,784,790 in Jan were GIFs (14,529,204) or JPEGs (1,255,586). o 644,950 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library (618,762 in Jan). NOTE: |Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we oooooooo|shipped about 82,150,000 pieces of mail oooooooo|(88,649,000 in Jan) pieces of mail to the oooooooo|3,050+ (2,600 in Jan) mailing lists we host. (The 82 million is probably low; we had to archive a significant amount of mail before the count because of a disk space crunch on one of the mail servers ... ) o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles to hosts on three continents (same as Jan). o Approximately 505,361,000,000 bytes in total (451,786,000,000 in Jan). 1. My Ingram/Ingraham conneciton.
    2. To all: Being new to this list, I thought it would be a good idea to set out my Ingram of Ingraham connection. The furthest Ingram I can identify is Arthur Ingram, who settled in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in circa 1817. He took out citizenship papers in 1817, stating that he had been born in Belfast, Ireland. In 1820 he married Sarah Stewart. He and his family are listed on the 1850 census, in Indiana Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, with an age of 72 for Arthur, suggesting that he was born in 1777 or 1778, and an age of 60 for Sarah. They had six children: Arthur Jr., Sarah Ann, Thomas, Henry, William, and David. On the 1850 census Henry is shown as aged 20, Sarah as 18, William J. as 22. The other children are not listed on the census, but are named in Arthur's will. His will was written in January 1853, and appears to have been probated in the same month, so that must have been when he died. William John Ingram, son of Arthur and Sarah Ingram, married Mary Ann Silvey on 24 Jul 1851 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Their children were: Angelina, b. 13 Dec 1852 in Sharpsburg, PA; Alice b. 7 Jan 1855, in Sharpsburg; Mary A., b. 1 Oct 1857, in Morgan County, Ohio; John W., b. 16 Aug 1860, Morgan County, Ohio; Lauretta Jane, b. 25 Dec 1863, in Morgan County; Ida May, b. 23 Nov 1866, in Morgan County, Ohio; Eunice Estella, b. 28 Mar 1870, in Calloway County, Missouri; and William H., b. 26 Sep 1875, in Calloway County, Missouri. Sometime between 1875 and 1888, William and Mary Ann Ingram moved their family to Lyon County, Kansas, then moved to Monroe, Washington, where they both died. Lauretta Jane Ingram married John Willard Brewer on 18 Jan 1888, in Lyon County, Kansas. They were my g-grandparents. Family tradition has always held that Arthur Ingram Sr was a sea faring man, and that he had originally come to the United States in the early 1800s, living first in New York. Soon after arriving in America, he appears, again according to family tradition, to have been impressed by the British, and held by them for 11 years before escaping and returning to America, this time settling in Pennsylvania. However, since he took out citizenship papers in 1817, it would appear he had not previously been an American citizen and therefore was a British subject until 1817. How much of this is true, I have no idea. Bill Brewer
