Here is Brian's update on his progress with the server rootsweb.com ****************************************************************** Last night Karen and I finished replacing the failing drive in the old server. It was fairly tricky surgery, because the old drive had a mixture of OS, local executables, and user HTML pages on it and we carefully separated those components onto separate disks. We were down for about 7 hours while we reconfigured the server. The good news is that the failing drive is now out of the machine, and the disks are organized such that we can easily move them to a newer and faster machine. The bad news is that the old server is still overloaded. We had hoped the new drives (which are much faster than the old drive) would have helped reduce the load on the server, but we still have capacity problems. We will probably have to continue disabling server-side includes during peak hours until we get the new server online. Sorry about that. ): ### > The AOL/upstream problems affecting our listservers has delayed > this. We will possibly cut over onto the new server on Friday, but > we'll probably wait until after the weekend if the old server seems > to be operating adequately. We now expect to be bringing the new server online early next week. The transition to the new server will require some downtime, but probably no more than one or two hours. The new server should provide us plenty of capacity and room for growth. Am I ever looking forward to that! -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O.
