Whoa!! Wait a minute.... We can't stop anyone else from creating *whatever* project they want to start. We do not own the internet, and we can't take away others rights to websites simply because we don't like what they're doing. (If we could I could think of many I would like to remove, and none have anything to do with genealogy) We also cannot stop anyone from creating a link to our site, this would be similar to banning the Telephone books. I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and think about what they're saying. Darilee, are you asking the US Biographies project to close up shop? If so, what about all the biographies they have spent long hours posting? Do you feel they should just give up everything they have been working on all this time and hand it over to another project? If so, turn the tables...what if they asked us to close it up? Also, what about the many USGenWeb volunteers who do not want to post biographies, or simply don't have time? I would think most CC's would be appreciative of this. One more resource for all of the genealogists on-line....isn't that why we're here? To help them...not take things away! I started the Indiana Biographies Project. I sent numerous messages through Indytalk asking for volunteers. I received responses from many of the INGenWeb volunteers, and the first 15 or so volunteers started right away. Jerry Mounts was our first volunteer to go on-line with his pages. In the week or so that I was corresponding with INGenWeb through Indytalk about the bios project, I received not a single complaint about the project. For everyones information, I have copied and pasted a message from Deb Murray (hope you don't mind Deb)that came through Indytalk. (notice the date) This would have been a more appropriate time to voice concerns, or offer to adopt your county, or simply e-mail the current coordinator and discuss sharing information, etc. ----------------------snip--------------------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 00:00:40 -0500 From: Deb Murray <debmurray@worldnet.att.net> To: INDYTALK-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <36242FF8.D42@worldnet.att.net>Subject: Let's Talk Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-asciiContent-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Betty, I'm going to take your invite to do something I've been meaning to do for awhile. I have been adding obituaries, poems and some cemetary listings to Fulton, Lagrange and Pulaski Counties. I've also been working on the Indiana Biographies project. It's been a long time since I sent you all a list of the counties with biographies online and the list is growing. We have well over 4,000 biographies online (Suzy Sprague, my asst coordinator gets to keep the count). I have tried to put together a crude list of all the counties, the url for them (if we have one) and the name of the county coordinator. Some of these names should look real familiar to this list! The ones that say TEMP after them have online bios but no one to give them a permanent home and yes, the ones with nothing after them are still orphans with no biographies online - submissions are welcome. I hope you'll all link the site on your county pages, I encourage the Bio coordinators to link to yourpages. Please forgive the list, it's late and I've been at a 3 hour 4-H meeting on rule changes so I'm not totally functional! Good night everyone! ------------------------------snip----------------------------- (A list of counties, and their URL's and coordinators followed) Both Indytalk and INGen-L were not archiving back when I had Indiana Bios project, or I would have forwarded to you all the postings I made about the project many months previous to the above posting. Just my two cents worth.....please remember, we can't tell someone they can't make a site on whatever they want....if someone else starts a Crawford Co. site, I'm not going to get mad and throw a tantrum...I'll e-mail the person and talk to them about a joint effort....helping each other, not trying to shut each other down. BTW, Kailyn is doing great! She's up to 3lbs 8 oz...we're hoping to have her home in a few weeks! :-) (Maybe when she comes home I'll have the time to finish my transcribing and posting all of the information I have for Crawford, including Biographies....maybe not, LOL...but I'll get it done...slowly, but surely! ;-)) Thanks Dee
