Have you closed your lists? You can do this on the Rootsweb Listowners Utility Page for your list. You can do this at the bottom of the page from the Customize Settings link. This would only allow subscribers to the list to post to the list. With this setting I have not had ANY spam get through to the list. Either Rootsweb catches it, or it gets redirected to me to determine if it is legitimate or not. I can then choose to send it to the list or not.
