Hello Everyone, I am the County Coordinator for Marion County, IN. and Macon County, TN. I also have several other volunteer positions with Genealogical projects that I do. I have been doing Family Research and Genealogy for many many years and belong to several Genealogical Societies and Historical Societies. I am also the Publications Director of the "GSMC Family Quest" journal for the Genealogical Society of Marion County, Indiana. Now that I have given you a little information of myself. I want to express my concerns about all the messages that I have been reading for the past 3 days about the USGenWeb---------. I have Family Material that I could add to the County sites, but I am thinking that I should contact the CONTRIBUTOR and let them know about what is going on and ask if they still want their Family Material placed on the Web Site. I was under the understanding that when I decided to be the Coutny Coodinator for USGenWeb, that this was a NON-PROFIT service provided for Genealogist. I must have misunderstood something. I realize that anyone can copy material from anywhere and publish it for profit, but I am very concerned that as County Coordinators--- we are doing a GREAT injustice to all the WONDERFUL FAMILY GENEALOGIST out here, if we don't let them know that the Family Information (Bible Records, Family Letters, Family Stories, Family ETC) that they are contributing to all of us for the purpose of sharing and connecting to distant cousins and to Help others with their research, is being copied and published for profit. Many Family Genealogist that are contributing are doing it ---- NOT FOR THE PURPOSE OF OTHERS TO COPY AND PUBLISH FOR PROFIT !! There may be some of the Family Genealogist that may not mind if this is done with their material and that is truly okay, but there are others that are NOT aware that this is being done and will not approve. Some are not aware that their information is public domain when placed on these sites or is owned by the SITE. The OPTION should be given to the Contributing Family Genealogist. They need to be informed that: " ANY MATERIAL CONTRIBUTED TO THE USGENWEB COUNTY SITES MAY BE COPIED AND PUBLISHED FOR PROFIT. " Also the Family Genealogist should be advised that when contributing information they should be given the credit for being the submitter and also place a COPY of the Family Information in the County Library, and with any Historical or Genealogical Society in that County and State of their Ancestors. With their name and the date on the material. So, if the purpose is to share and contribute your Family material then it is there for anyone doing research in that County to find. To some this may not seem like a BIG Deal, But I have done Family Research and Genealogy for many years and I respect other Family Genealogist as I know that it is a very expensive and time consuming LABOR OF LOVE, and you should be given the credit for doing the WORK. The knowledge of what can be done to Contibutors Family Information should be given and the option should be up to them. If I am in anyway misunderstanding just what is going on with USGENWEB,. then PLEASE let me know. I have discussed this with other County Coordinators and we all share these same feelings, even though the most of us are sitting back and waiting to see just what is going to happen, and just what is happening to the material that we work hard to provide---- as we thought to be a NON-PROFIT site.
