    3. Geocities and Yahoo! merger Just in case anyone has webpages on these two sites and haven't been paying much attention to them lately, you'll want to know that Geocities and Yahoo! are combining their memberships. Visit here for more info: http://www.geocities.com/help/infocenter.html Here's a couple of their announcements: -Chris THE LATEST YAHOO! GEOCITIES SCOOP We'll soon be combining our GeoCities member database with Yahoo!'s, and when our two systems are fully synchronized, we'll unveil a brand new site called "Yahoo! GeoCities." From that day on, the first time you try to log in to GeoCities or access a GeoCities feature, you'll see something a little different: you'll be asked to complete a simple, one-time-only re-registration process before you can access the new "Yahoo! GeoCities" area. It's not as complicated as it sounds -- to get the details, go to the Yahoo! GeoCities merger Info Center: http://www.geocities.com/help/infocenter.html ---------- The Yahoo! - GeoCities merger is official, and as a result, we'll soon be making some great changes to the site and your membership. Later this month, on a soon-to-be- specified date, we will fully integrate our two sites. From that day forward, all GeoCities members will need to go through a one-time-only re-registration process. This is especially important for Homesteaders who FTP because they won't be able to FTP any files until they've re-registered. --------- ONE-TIME-ONLY RE-REGISTRATION We'll soon be combining our GeoCities member database with Yahoo!'s, and when our two systems are fully synchronized, we'll unveil a brand new site called "Yahoo! GeoCities." From that day on, the first time you try to log in to GeoCities or access a GeoCities feature, you'll see something a little different: you'll be asked to complete a simple, one-time-only re-registration process before you can access the new "Yahoo! GeoCities" area. It's not as complicated as it sounds — let's talk about it: **Who needs to re-register? Everybody in the whole wide GeoWorld — all current GeoCities members, including FTP users and anyone who wants to use Yahoo! Chat Rooms or Message Boards. **Why do I need to re-register? It's pretty important. We just want to make sure all your member information is safe and secure after we combine our two databases. The best and easiest way for us to do so is to ask you to re-register. **How do I re-register? You'll follow a simple, one-time-only process. You'll probably want to print out the last page so you'll have a hard copy of your unique member name and other vital information. **What's involved in the process? You'll be asked to verify your member name, categorize your home page and agree to Yahoo!'s Terms of Service. Don't worry — there'll be plenty of step-by-step instructions to guide you. **What's this about my member name? When we merge our member database with Yahoo!'s, we want to make sure that each of our GeoCitizens has a unique member name. Because both our companies have huge memberships, it's pretty likely that two completely different people will have the same member name (for example, there may be a "BobbyJoe" at GeoCities and a "BobbyJoe" at Yahoo!). You may know that the two of you are different people, but the merged database definitely won't. **How do I get this "unique" member name? When you re-register (remember, it's a one-time thing), you'll be asked to adopt a Yahoo! ID that will serve as your new member name. All GeoCitizens will automatically be assigned an ID that follows this format: membername.geo (for example, you'll be BobbyJoe.geo). **What if I don't like ".geo"? It's up to you whether you want to keep this name or choose a brand-new Yahoo! ID. You'll be presented with several options. We'll do our best to find the closest match to your old member name; if it's already taken, you'll be able to choose from the variations we suggest, or you can make up your own. **What if I already have a Yahoo! ID? If you wish, you can merge your Yahoo! and GeoCities accounts under your existing Yahoo! ID. Help! I'm confused! Don't worry; when you go through the actual re-registration process, we'll give you plenty of information and directions!
