I feel compelled to pass on this story to my fellow County Coordinators, as much as a "feel good" situation, in addition to being a nice addition to the Kosciusko Co site. A few weeks ago(August 17) I received the following email: >Hello! >We just acquired a family album of a family named "Mann", two of >whom it appears from cdv's and notations to have served with the 74th Indiana >Vol. Inf. One cdv is identified as John Mann, with the handwritten in >ink notation that he was killed in battle in 1864. Samuel Mann his >brother, is also pictured, serving in the same unit. >The album has various cdv's of other officers and men, and it >appears Samuel or John Mann served under Col. Morgan, as 2nd in command, and >under Gen. Rosecrans, and Gen. Sherman, noting that he fought with >Sherman in the seige of Atlanta and "his march to the sea". These are >notations in the album. >Could you please advise as to any information you have on a John >Mann, or Samuel Mann, their CW history, battles fought in, and which battle >took the life of John Mann, if you know this information. Any help >would be appreciated. >The album is full of various officers cdv's as well, and was found in an old trunk. > Thank you very much, Maureen DeLorme I forwarded the message on to a Civil War researcher within Kosciusko County who corresponded with Ms.DeLorme. Following is the outcome of the story which I received today: >Hi Gene, >Now that the whole "deal" is over... thought I would tell you the >saga of the Civil War message that you forwarded to me... >Remember a couple of weeks ago... a Maureen DeLorme who wanted >info about some Kos. Co. Civil War guys... Briefly... as briefly >as possible... she had just purchased a album... of carte de >vistes... old photos.... some 90+ of them... and of that 40 or so >were Civil War soldiers -officers in uniform. After a couple of >e-mails back & forth about A. S. Milice who definitely was a >Kos. Co. guy... I suggested that she give me an inventory of the >men... mostly, it seemed were in the 74th Ind. Inf. >In the meantime I called my friend ...in Fort Wayne... and told >him about the album... and explained that it wasn't for sale, but >that she had said that she would get us copies of the soldiers - >good copies. Then... came the inventory... an 18 page document >that was a literal description of every photo in wonderful >descriptive text. And shortly thereafter... a couple of days... >she made it known that the album would be for sale... to my >friend in Fort Wayne or me. I send back an e-mail asking what >price they were asking... and a day or so later..."we" heard from >her asking a rather high price... in fact ... it was pretty >high... although my friend thought that he might still be able to >swing it. (Since I have no interest in buying photos... I didn't >even consider it for myself) He asked for a couple of days to >think about it... and last week...talked to his friendly banker >and made arrangements for a certified check. In the meantime I >had received an e-mail with the price being lowered by $500.00 >which helped tremendously... That put the price at an >appropriate amount for an album of this nature... He sent the >bank certified check overnite express on Wednesday. They mailed >the album yesterday...overnight express... and he should have it >today!! >There are, I think, 4 pictures in it of Kos. Co. men... and >several Elkhart County men... If you are interested in putting >them in the Photo Album ... and we can do it by my scanning the >images and producing a file on each one of them on a disk... I >will certainly be glad to do that ... I probably won't get to >see it for a couple of weeks... as Fort Wayne friend is heading >out on vacation... Monday...to be gone for a week to Canada... >What an interesting deal... The California people lecture and >exhibit Victorian post-mortem images and hair weaving pieces... >morbid topic....but ties in a little to the post-Civil War era... >thus their interest in the Civil War album... >They came by the album... it was in a steamer trunk... at a yard >sale... or so they said... The gal who bought the steamer trunk >wanted the trunk but not the album... so they bought the album >from her... What a deal!!! > Thought you might enjoy what has transpired since you >"forwarded" that message to me... > And I will get some of the photos up on the Kosciusko Co site. Pretty neat what comes our way in this Internet world. Gene Andert Kosciusko Co, IN USGenWeb Coordinator genea@ctlnet.com http://user.ctlnet.com/gan155/kosco.htm Listowner: inkosciu-L@rootsweb.com
