    3. Oftentimes I see these messages about needing help -- one tip I found was if you check some of the things already out there you can "narrow down" where you are searching and then go forward and backwards. For instance -- if you start with http://www.familytreemaker.com it tells you lots of info that is found on cds as well as other sites searching that name or which has info. If you don't have the cd sometimes it will tell you info -- like which county or census time, etc. and this gives you a place to look (even if not the same person it oftentimes makes "hits". I noticed in last one about this lady searching Bowers that when I plugged in the name there it showed a book of marriages for Harrison Co, IN for him and a Martha A. Clark (she had said the wife was Martha A. C. so that "sounds" like a good hit - and you could even see the date of marriage in the results it showed). http://www.gendex.com (choose the second option then follow it to accessing the surname info then plug in the name in exact box or soundex box and then follow to the names and see what you get -- sometimes if same state you can even find others searching same surname that have webpages. WorldConnect is another one like that - so much info and can narrow down your search. The USGenWeb Project (http://www.usgenweb.net) you can put queries in the exact county or the unknown county area -- then do a GLOBAL SEARCH and see who else is searching that surname in that state Once you find the county or counties then put a query in -- you will find LOTS of persons seeking same surnames in the same area -- and sometimes older persons or persons who just love going in the records will contact you with info about them that this person found. When you do the above then you don't need to send generalized messages and MORE persons will help you on the list -- I personally usually just glance at it and ignore if if it is general, but if they say something like: Lived in Pike, Gibson Co, IN area around turn of 20th century, then it perks me up and I will even go into my massive files to see what I have. I am sure others out there also would be piqued if you mentioned their county they search or do webpages for, or even general area (they went along the Ohio River between 1840 and 1880). Just suggestion. Judy M. At 08:08 PM 9/23/2001 EDT, BPJChris@cs.com wrote: >I need some ones help. Anyone who has any info on the Christie's of Indiana >would be helpful. 3. I just noticed something that may be of interest to you: Lazarus Bowers married Jan 25, 1866 Harrison Co, IN to Martha A. Clark sounds like a possible for you -- if they were there in 66 then good chance they were there in 60 or 70 too. This would narrow down your entire state search for them possibly. (Of course they could have done like my sister-in-law did -- she went from Wheeling WVA across state of Ohio and married in Richmond IND -- and they did that even back in 1860s too.) Judy M.

    3. Why do you think they are in Indiana? I found another site showing you saying that he was born in Germany in 1841 and came around 1850 to USA to be Naturalized and married in VA -- no mention of Indiana. Reason I ask is that too many persons ask for every county stuff -- and this is almost like a spam. I did notice that if you check famiytreemaker.com that in 1900 a Lazarus Bowers is in Missouri 1900 census. Again this is not Indiana, which this forum is about. Judy M. 3. I grew up in Fairmount, Grant Co., IN. Our school use to take classes on field trips to the Ball Bros. factory (1960s). I remember it being interesting, as we used the Ball Mason jars in our house. I most likely still have a few. I believe they also had a section like a museum, showing the Ball Bros. Mason jars and other things they manufactured, also history on the Ball brothers. I hadn't thought about all of this in quite some time. Ball Memorial Hospital and Ball State University, in Muncie are both named for the brothers. I am sure that there is a lot of documentation on the Ball Bros. as well as pictures, etc. there in Muncie. You might be interested in this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/balljars.htm (Sorry, if someone else already noted this site). Ruth Hoggatt

    3. Most all larger cities and even the larger towns have Business Directories and have done so since the 1800s -- ask at the public library and the phone company there as well as the historical and genealogical libraries and see if they didn't have something telling about this company. Also, they almost always advertised in newspapers -- check them out too. Judy M.

    2. In answer to the question about Ball Brothers Company in Muncie, IN. Glass jars for home canning and preserving have been made by Ball in Muncie, IN. for most if not all of the last century. I know they were popular in the 1930 period because my mother used them. They are still available in most stores. I suspect this was your grandfather's place of employment. Max Powers from Indiana

Here is a quote from Ball's home page. "In 1887, the five <A HREF="http://www.ball.com/bhome/ball_fam.html">Ball brothers</A> - Edmund, Frank, George, Lucius and William - moved their business to Muncie, Indiana to take advantage of a natural gas boom in the Midwest. Great quantities of natural gas were necessary to make glass. Ball acquired the first of several small glass companies in 1898, and printed the first Ball Blue Book - featuring home canning recipes and techniques - in 1909." 2. I just want to thank Keith for letting us know about the Genealogy Fair in Louisville. I live only 1 and half hr from there and do plan to attend. The Fair sounds like a real treat and at a great price too. I know I will be able to learn a lot in just general genealogy know-how and research. My ancestor Colonel (Hedgman Butler) Devers enlisted in the Confederate Army at Georgetown, Scott County KY (not so far from Lousiville) at age 18 so I presume that he lived there with his family. I do find other Devers in Scott County, KY. I want to learn what then took him to Rush County, IN where he married Della Priest in Dec 1869, had two other marriages, later become a Quaker, and lived out his life as a Hoosier!! I look forward to this Genealogy Fair to maybe answer some of these questions and if not, I know I'll learn a lot. So, again I am most thankful to Keith for letting us in the southern Indiana area know about this. There are lots of opportunities out there but we depend on each other to spread the word!! 3. I'm not sure how this mailing list works so please let me know if I'm doing it right or not! THANKS! I am searching for my birth father (and birth mother - she was born in Illinois (25 at the time)). My birth father was born in Indiana and his name is R.D. Stafford. He was 24 at the time I was born and I was born in 1957. He had worked at one time as a tool and die maker. He had three children at the time I was born. A son who was 6 or 7 and two daughters. One 3 and the other 5. I was given up for adoption because he was unemployed at the time and they feared they could not raise another child. He was married to my birth mother, her last name was Estevez. Any help or ideas of where I can look for him, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! Jeanne aka (birth name Vicki L. Stafford)

    3. Notice you are searching the names Schultz and Bayles(s). Do these folks happen to live in the Jefferson County, Indiana area? I have just completed a survey of the Bayless Cemetery which was relocated in 1941, due to the Jefferson Proving Ground taking the land. The cemetery was in Section 4 of Madison Twp., Jefferson County, now it is in Section 26, same township. Yesterday, I went back out to the cemetery to recheck what I had transcribed from the tombstones, so need to add those corrections today. But, you may find the new survey at: http://www.myindianahome.net/gen/jeff/records/cemetery/bayless.html Re: Schultz family. A friend who also lives in Jefferson County is researching his Schultz family. Although the name Schultz is a pretty common surname, I thought I would throw that out there. His folks left Le Havre, France in 1854. Their names were Berhard & Margaret (Becker) Schultz. The Augustine family seems to have traveled with them to Jefferson County. 2. Hi, I am new to this list and looking for these descendants. Schultz, HInderer and Bayles. I want to say I have seen the posting the last few days. Everyone must remember that these are free sites, set up for us to use. We should follow the rules set down. Some descendants might cross from different states. There are lists for all of them. Remember, people are working for free to provide theses lists for us and giving of there time. I for one appreciate what they do. This has happen on other sites too. Remember if these people weren't here volunteering there time, you wouldn't be able to do this at all. You would have to make phone calls, by mail and purchasing a lot of documents and paying for a lot of searching. I thank them.
