Hello Indiana: URGENT REQUEST!: Now that we are over the holidays, This years is our 350th Anniversary of the landing of the Swartwout family in North America. The name has many variations such as Swarthout, Swartout, Swartwood, Swathwood, Swarthwood etc. We need help in gather lines, pictures, articles, wills, what ever you have stashed in your attic. We would really appreciated it if you shared with us what you had, there a literally thousands of us here looking for our roots, looking for connections. For our 350th Anniversary we need to updated our list of folks out there that are descendants somewhere along the line of any of those variations. We also have a family newsletter that cost only $5.00 per year, a real bargain. Just send it your mailing address. Every day I get e-mail asking me for help. Up here in Canada, there were two brothers that had huge families, all the remains of their descendants are the female sides. All the male went back to the States. I'm am the maintainer of "The Updated Swartwout Chronicles" People submit their lines-ged-coms etc. and I just drop them into the data base. It is everyone's database. Each person is responsible for their own submissions. It is not copyrighted. Kathy kathyhoeldke@sympatico.ca ldyk@hotmail.ca

Thank you so very much for your stated request to "type out instead of using initials." I have been at this genealogy thing for some months, but I still find the use of these abbreviations puzzling and questioning them embarrassing and intrusive to other and more enlightened list users. This little consideration by one-and-all will be ever so much appreciated. Linda
May your holidays be spent with family and friends and the new year bring you and yours health, happiness, peace and prosperity! For you who are veteran's of Rootsweb email lists, this might be old information. But, for those of you who haven't been a subscriber during the holidays, let me give you a hint at what is about to happen. Starting tonight, Santa, among others, will start delivering new computers, internet service, and genealogy gifts (software) to a host of new rooters! We will be having an influx of NEW subscribers to all the lists. This is GOOD! But while you will see new cousins, friends, and contacts coming on-line, joining email lists, posting surnames to databases, they will be asking all those questions you have seen posted over and over again. Unfortunate as it may be, new users mean we have to reinvent the wheel. *Grin* Please welcome the "newbies" to our lists, have PATIENCE with them, help them and hopefully send them in the right direction. For a month or so (perhaps til the end of January) it will be helpful if we can refrain from using a lot of initials and abbreviations in our responses. When discussing the FHC, let's all take a couple of seconds to type "Family History Center," and give an explanation of who, what, where, when. Please don't assume that EVERYONE knows what it is, or has one near them. I can't stress enough how important your patience and help is for the next month or two. Mistakes will be made, (like posting a message that is blank, or no subject line, or leaving entire digests in replies or my personal favorite, "Researching John Johnson. Send all information"!*LOL*) Questions will be asked like "What is the FHC, what is the SSDI, what is, can you explain, where do I find, etc...Remember that these were once OUR errors and OUR questions. We were all new once, and many current subscribers are still learning, so let's continue the spirit of cooperation throughout the year. This list is about helping each other. Let's be specific and clear in our responses to folks, and give a little extra in explanations. Also keep in mind that new subscribers may know nothing about computers, the internet, and genealogy, resulting in many extremely inexperienced researchers. If you see questions on the list regarding computers, software, etc. please respond to these questions off list if at all possible. REMEMBER these new researchers may have file cabinets full of information regarding YOUR own family tree, so let's be as cordial, helpful and informative as we can be! Happy Holidays! Pat Mount
Indiana Historical Society to Host Genealogy Lecture Genealogist Betty L. Warren to Discuss Reading and Interpreting Handwritten Records Betty L. Warren, president of the Indiana Genealogical Society, will present a lecture titled "Paleography: Historical Script" from 10:00 a.m. to noon on January 19 at the Indiana Historical Society. Warren's lecture will focus on techniques for reading and interpreting handwriting styles used in written records in English and/or European language documents from the 16th century through American colonial times and into the 19th century. She will also explore the three basic styles of old world handwriting and discuss the variable factors to consider when trying to read old documents including personal style, spellings, punctuation, abbreviations, foreign language, writing surfaces and utensils. The cost to attend Warren's lecture is $10; $5 for IHS members. Preregistration is encouraged as seating is limited. To register or to request a workshop brochure, call (317) 233-5659 or download a conference brochure at http://www.indianahistory.org/events.php?filename=January19&dates=19. Since 1830, the Indiana Historical Society has collected, preserved, interpreted and disseminated Indiana history. The independent, nonprofit organization also publishes books and periodicals; sponsors teacher workshops; provides youth, adult and family programming; and assists local historical groups throughout the state. One of the oldest historical societies in the United States, the Indiana Historical Society has more than 11,000 members, making it the third largest historical society in the country.
If you are interested, I can obtain copies of whatever you find. I can also do searches at OHS if you have other names and possible dates. Let me know. Hello, That was a quick response :-) The Ohio Historical Society has a website that you can go to. On there, you can look up what death certificates they have between, I believe, 1913 and 1938. Someting like that anyway. I can obtain printouts of any of those that you wish. For the other years, I do not believe there is any kind of index. It is all on microfilm. It would be easier if you had specific names and years in mind. Who did you write to for the marriage certificate information? OHS does not have records for all counties but they do have some. I will check to see if they have the counties you mentioned. No, I'm sorry. To my knowledge I am not connected to the names you mentioned. Please let me know what you would like for me to obtain for you. There are only a few John Williams marriages in the Indiana State database that took place in Dec of 1850. Here are two of them: WILLIAMS, John A to LUNFORD, Mary in Vigo County on 25 Dec 1850 WILLIAMS John R to DEAN, Eveline in Delaware County on 12 Dec 1850 I rather think the first one is a good possibility as someone could easily have misread the old handwriting and come up with Lunford for Tuxford. Pat Mount
Can somebody please forward any information on Mary Tuxford to John R wILLIAMS 25 December 1850 Any information please forward to Bob Tuxford
