I've recently put a lot of Indiana postcards online - some of them are quite old and may be interesting for county web pages: http://www.afn.org/~afn30091/inimages/ It is just a directory with the images all stuffed in it, so don't try to find a fancy html file (there isn't one!) They are named according to town, then the place featured, and then any date if it is known. I hope that the file name is enough description to go on...it's all the info I have! Since I don't own the postcards I have no way of knowing exactly how old the postcards are, unless noted by postmark date. **Be warned that some of the images may still be protected under copyright.** I've been finding them online at the ebay auction (http://www.ebay.com) from different people who are trying to sell their postcards. Since they're scanned by different people, the scan quality varies a lot. I add to it from time to time as I run across new images. So please don't ask me if I have any others or if I can get some for a certain town...but do check back once in a while to see if there are any new ones. Enjoy! Here is a list of Indiana Counties that are available for adoption; Dearborn , Ohio , Putnam , Boone and Marion If you would like to have one of these be sure to visti Dee's "orphan page" and she will get you set up; http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/indy/ On another note, we need less than 500 "hits" to reach two hundred thousand on the State page. Not too bad for two years,of course most of the visits occurred while Betty was in charge. Next, if you would like to transcribe a Indiana census but don't have the data check out this site for a FREE book; http://www.skpub.com/genie/ Here is what they said about a free book; SK Publications publishes books of prints of the original census schedules. Many counties in several states are available from 1800-1850 Census Books of prints of the original census schedules. SK Publications has offered to provide a free copy of one of their books containing photocopies of original census pages to those who volunteer to transcribe counties for which they have books. In return, they ask that a notice be put on the uploaded transcription crediting their donation. If you are interested in this offer, please check out their pages and make sure that they have a book for the state and county that you are interested in transcribing. I have gotten several new files for the Indiana archives so be sure to see if there is anything new for your County that you may want to link to; http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/in/infiles.htm I am caught up on the archives now so if you have anything new to donate be sure to let me know. Ok...I reconfigured in personal display and got all 58 messages for Lake County since Jan 21st. Kathy Huish- the quick learning new kid on the block ;)
Hello, Well I was trying to answer the question about how many queries are being submitted. I just adopted Lake County 1 week ago so I'm still learning. I went to the automated query page and it says 22 of 58 queries (supposedly in just the past month) but has no way of seeing messages 23-58...am I missing something? For your information. I believe the source of the forwarded message to be reliable. Sam
Found a great site just a little while ago...it has histories, photos etc. Has a whole page on Lake County and one on Porter County, I havent checked all over Indiana as my main interests are up north here. It's the <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/timarends/preserveindiana.html"> Indiana Architecture Home</A> if you cant click in email: it's at http://members.aol.com/timarends/preserveindiana.html I thought it would be just architecture but it includes histories such as the founders of some towns, first settlers etc...really neat site! Blackford County has had 67 queries/responses since January 25, 1998. People haven't caught on to what the Obituary Forum should be and are also posting queries there (about 3, last I looked). Oh, What to do? What to do? Judy Wiesenauer

Hello all! I'm Kathy Huish and I'm the new volunteer for the Lake County GenWeb page. I've lived in this county for 29 years and 10 months to the day as of thursday. I'll be 30 June 9th...do the math :) Gifts of cash are welcomed hehe Just kidding. Ok on a more serious note. My own homepage (http://members.tripod.com/~KHuish KH in caps) started as an adoption page but as my addiction for genealogy grew it's become more of genealogy first and adoption second. I have come to love the "hunt" in genealogy and also enjoy adding lots to my own homepage so working on a GenWeb county is exciting to me. I have my parents lines back as far as about 1810 England (Huish) and 1740 in PA or MD (Plummer), my brickwall stops there. I don't know what other info to give you to introduce myself but if you'd like to know anything just let me know. And if you have ANY info for the Lake County Indiana page please send it! I would really like to make this page grow! Kathy Huish Lake County, Indiana http://users.rootsweb.com/~inlake/ Firstmom's Adoption and Genealogy Page http://members.tripod.com/~KHuish KH in caps!

Fred and all, The Indiana Genealogical Society WWW page has a new webmaster -- me. I will be posting a notice later this week concerning the Society's interest in receiving unpublished, hard copy or WWW, material from the Indiana Counties. Oh, Karen Zack [hope I spelled that name correctly, considering the time of day it is I shouldn't even be sending a message, probably; and my memory banks are about burned out], if you read this, I seemed to have put your request for an USPS address change in the wrong stack of papers, if you could send it to me I'd appreciate it. Thanks
I've been wondering what kind of "action" the Indiana Counties have been experiencing with the Query Forum. Greene Co. has had 156 postings since 1/23/98 Knox Co. - 84 - 1/24/98 Lawrence Co. - 76 - 1/24/98 Morgan Co. - 86 - 1/24/98
Impressive site, Gene. I have linked it on my Research in Indiana page http://www.netusa1.net/~beheler/INrsrch.html Perhaps later I can take you up on the offer of the use of your text and graphics to personalize it to my counties. Hi , Lori sent me the notice that she put on her Ripley site to make it clear that her site is NOT a part of the new company"USGenWeb Inc." she is allowing me to send it out so that anyone that wants to do the same can use her notice, just be sure to change the County name. *******DISCLAIMER NOTICE**************************** THE USGenWeb Project is what these pages are about. There is a `For Profit' organization that incorporated the name `USGenWeb', then made demands on the real USGenWeb organization. This <u>USGenWeb Project</U> is an entirely `Not-for-Profit' entity, and every Ripley County GenWeb page, and Ripley County Historical Society page, are hosted/housed by Rootsweb, and the USGenWeb Project, <FONT COLOR="FF0000">NOT </FONT>by that USGenWeb, Inc. *************************************************************
Therer is now an official announcement about the USGenWeb project and the USGenWeb Inc. You will find it at; http://www.usgenweb.org/official/announce.html Also, below you will find a message from Dr. Brian Leverich on his position. ******BRIAN SAID*************************************************** The idea I was trying to get across is that RootsWeb *hosts* domains, but we don't own, control, or otherwise claim proprietary rights: we believe the domains belong to the volunteers who create the content. That's really different from Jerry's philosophy. Like lightyears different. As written, to the casual (that is, to most) readers it comes across as "Jerry owns some domains and houses some domains, and RootsWeb owns some domains and houses some domains." >From our standpoint, the message that RootsWeb is just like Jerry is substantially worse than saying nothing at all. For the final public release, could you just entirely delete that section and just avoid any mention of RootsWeb anywhere in the post? We'll do our own "RootsWeb isn't Jerry" post. ### Guys, RootsWeb isn't just like Jerry. We aren't even close. o We didn't incorporate USGenWeb. o We don't claim ownership of usgenweb.org. We donated usgenweb.org to the project, without coercion or reservation. o We didn't put banner adds on the USGenWeb homepage. o We donate most of the server space used by the project, but we don't claim ownership of the project (or even to be the home of the project!). o We support a NC and Board who are obviously in tune with the volunteers. Apart from the moral issues, RootsWeb's servers *work* and we don't pull stunts like naming ourselves RootsWeb to piggyback on the goodwill that RootsQuest has generated. When in the name of being "evenhanded" you say RootsWeb is just like Jerry, the loud message you are sending is that morally sound behavior, not to mention technical competence, just doesn't matter. While that's not likely to change our behavior, it sure doesn't make it easier to decide to do things like sleep in a cold, dark NOC to keep the generator going during and USGenWeb online during a power outage. -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O.
