Julian, It's just a link. It helps to pull together the various resources for each county. Often unexperienced visitors miss some facit of available information for a county. In no way is this meant to force anyone to maintain obits or bios. Debby At 09:36 AM 4/29/1999 -0700, you wrote: >I agree with Johns comment on No. 2. Re: No 2 I will, of course, abide by any decisions but do not have a link to the Bios Project. The Clinton County site is *heavy on bios*... I have bought a couple of books for this purpose and many visitors seem to like this feature. I haven't volunteered for the Bios Project because others also submit articles they have transcribed and I want to leave credit for their work with the bio. Just my two cents........ > 2. Maintain links to INGeNWeb, USGenWeb pages, and Indiana Counties, >Surnames, > Queries, Obituaries, and Biographies Online. > 4. Maintain Query pages for your county. Hi all! Like everybody else, it seems, I am confused also about these two. I have the INGenWeb logo and the USGenWeb logo at the top of my main page for Henry Co. Each logo is linked to it's respective page. So am I understanding that I also have to have a separate link besides these to each of the following: Obits Bios Surnames Queries ???? If so...why? #4..Maintain Query pages for your county? I use the GenConnect automatic board for queries on the Henry Co. page. Is there something else I need as far as queries? Thanks for helping me out! Linda lmaker@netdirect.net Confused in Henry Co. The first two links are no problem, it is the latter link(s) that is a bit ambiguous. I gather this is intended to refer to: http://vax1.vigo.lib.in.us/~jmounts/sqob.htm but could be interpreted to mean state level pages for these subjects or other possible sources (for example, Dubois has boards for Bios and Obits as well as Queries. I agree with Johns comment on No. 2. I would not like to take on the additional work of maintaining actual obits and bios for my counties. I currently link to another group that provides Monroe bios and the Monroe list manager places some obits online. Owen takes a different approach and I provide little more than the html support. Owen's emphasis is through their online archival material which is certainly an useful effort. What I am saying is that I think the tone of No. 2 is too near requiring the existence of obits and bios for one's county. If it is just a link to the state page then that should be very clear. Well personally, I dont understand why these are seperate from the county. I had already had about 15 biographies on my County site before taking on the Lake Co Bio "Project". If someone else had adopted it there would be Bios for this county spread between various website such as Jasper county. The CC has a lot of bios, and now someone else adopted the bio project for that county so it's like theyre split up in different places. I also adopted the Newton co bio project. The newton county page doesnt have any bios, obits, or surnames so I didnt foresee the bio project being adopted. Why are we putting things in 50 different locations?? Same goes for the census project etc. I realize that some CC's dont really want to have to do much, some dont have the time between IRL and CC'ing a few different counties. But I think it will confuse visitors more if, for one county, they need to look at the county page PLUS the census, cemetery, biography and other various projects. And if they are on two different pages (example: I have the census's for Lake Co on the Lake co page where it belongs, then if the census project also has them on that page) arent we taking up more server space that Rootsweb cant afford already? Been confused about this since all these smaller projects started showing up...finally I had to ask. Kathy

On the INGenWeb page there are two separate overall Indiana links, one titled: "Surnames, Queries, Obits and Bible Records" and a separate link called: "Indiana Biographies Project". I have a couple of comments about the draft Guidelines, in particular nos. 2 and 3. No. 2 reads "Maintain links to INGenWeb, USGen WEB pages, and Indiana Counties, Surnames, Queries, Obituaries, and Biographies Online" The latter is currently a subpage of the INGenWeb home page. While I find it very useful, there are other useful subpages and I'm not certain that this one should be a required link from all county pages. Very few of them currently link directly to it. No. 3 "Display INGenWeb and USGenWeb Logo on your main page". I have no problem with the INGenWeb logo, which I find elegant and useful, particularly in the commonly used format indicating the county's location. On the other hand I find the USGenWeb logo clumsy and I removed it some months back as unnecessary clutter. I've just finished fossicking through all the IN county pages looking for useful ideas for the Decatur page and I picked up quite a few clues and developed my own view, shared by others, that Orange Co stands out among the rest. I kept count of the logos and found that 15 display INGenWeb but not USGenWeb, 3 display USGenWeb without InGenWeb, and 3 show neither. I'm quite ready to abide by the rules once they're agreed to, especially since I found several pages that discreetly tuck the USGenWeb logo at a relevant point low in the page, an arrangement that I'll happily adopt. Congratulations to the Guidelines Committee! I am currently involved in the committee for the MIGenWeb & know how tough it can be! MIGenWeb CC's are discussing whether the "history" section (how USGenWeb developed & SC contact info) should be an element of every site or a central page everyone links to - I did not see a reference to the history section in our guidelines; however I did see that the "main" page should provide a link to the SC's e-mail. How about providing a link on the main page to the CC's e-mail? I have had problems locating the CC's address on other USGenWeb pages - should this be a requirement? Tracey Morris
The INGenWeb Guidelines and Procedures Committee composed of Debby Beheler, Eric Craig and John G. West are proud to announce that the Proposed Guidelines and Procedures for the INGenWeb are completed. Please review these at your earliest convenience and let us know of any problems, in order to resolve them as quickly as possible. The committee has overcome many obstacles and worked diligently and with great vigor to make these guidelines worthy of consideration of the great CC's of the INGenWeb Project. I would like to thank personally Debby, Committee Chairman, Eric and John,Committee Members, for preparing and working on these guidelines. Their sincerity to work together in behalf of the county coordinator's and Indiana is deeply appreciated. In the next few days you will be receiving a ballot to vote yes or no to accept these guidelines and procedures. Feel free to take your time and discuss them. Debby Eric and John will be willing to help you. Your ballot should be in by May 14th to be counted. ============================================================ Proposed INGenWeb Guidelines and Procedures Basic Indiana County Page Requirements 1. Maintaining an INGenWeb County web site requires posting information that is beneficial to genealogical researchers concerning the county. 2. Maintain links to INGeNWeb, USGenWeb pages, and Indiana Counties, Surnames, Queries, Obituaries, and Biographies Online. 3. Display INGenWeb and USGenWeb Logo on your main page. 4. Maintain Query pages for your county. 5. Maintain a reference page (formerly called a Lookup page) to aid visitors to your site in finding genealogical resource materials. 6. Post a reference on your main page to the state coordinator for new county volunteers. 7. Subscribe to the INGenWeb mailing list (brief version). Send email to: (INGEN-L-request@rootsweb.com /no subject "subscribe" in the message area). 8. Aside from these few requirements, the design and content of the pages are up to the CC. Copyright Infringement It is the policy of the INGenWeb Project to obtain permission from the creator of the code, graphics, and backgrounds before using them on our pages. You must have permission from the creator, author or publisher of data that you wish to include on your website, as well. If you find yourself having used someone's code or data without their permission, please either obtain that permission or remove that feature from your pages. Procedure for new county coordinators As new county coordinators adopt INGenWeb county pages and place them on the web, the pages are checked by SC, ASC or other SC appointed volunteer, for the required elements and to be sure your links work. Your evaluator will let you know when your site has been visited. If there are any problems with links or any required elements missing, you will be advised so you may make any changes or corrections. Post a message to the SC or ASC when you are ready for your page to be checked. Procedures - Election of State Coordinator Elections for IN State Coordinator (SC) will be held from August 1 to 7 each year, with nominations being open from July 15 - 30. The term will be for one year beginning on August 15th. The newly elected SC shall select an assistant state coordinator (ASC). However, the current ASC was apppointed prior to the USGenWeb Project bylaws becoming effective; therefore, the newly elected SC shall honor the grandfather clause in the USGenWeb by-laws which allows the current ASC to remain in that office until vacated by that person. If, or when, the current ASC forfeits the position, then the SC shall be allowed to appoint a new ASC to fill the position during what time is left in the SC's tenure. A State Coordinator who resigns (is removed or unable to serve) will be replaced by the ASC immediately until an election is held. The election to commence 30 days following the resignation (removal or other inability to serve), with nominations being made during the 3 weeks following the resignation (removal or other inability to serve). Who is eligible to vote? - One vote is allowed per county, but only one vote per individual. So if you host more than one county, you have one vote. And if there is more than one person maintaining a county, one must be selected by them to be the one eligible to vote. CC's will be eligible to vote in any INGenWeb election after 30 days as CC. Grievance procedures A coordinator who is not meeting minimum requirements (as outlined in "basic requirements" (above) will be contacted by the SC or ASC to ask the CC to remedy the ommission. Two weeks from the time of this contact by the SC/ASC shall be allowed for corrections in order to meet minimum requirements. In the case of non-communication of a CC with the project and/or visitors to the site, the SC or ASC will contact the CC to mediate any problems that may exist, (such as health or family problems) and determine ability to proceed. The SC shall ensure that a monthly roll call is conducted and that all of the County Coordinators have responded. A grievance committee of 5 members will be elected from CCs and by the CCs. Nominations will be open from July 15 - 30, with elections occurring from August 1 to 7 each year in conjunction with the SC election and serving the same term beginning on August 15th. Eligible committee members must have at least six months experience as a CC. The SC will bring before the grievance committee any problem with a CC who the SC feels needs to be removed from the project. A CC may appeal to the grievance committee and is encouraged to do so. The committee will make the final decision on whether the CC is removed. Procedures that may be taken when removing a CC, are appointing a new CC (temporary or permanent) and removing links from the State Pages that point to the removed CC's County Pages. The new CC will create his or her own County Pages as defined above, retaining any posted queries and other data donated by volunteers to the removed CC's site. Permission must be obtained from the removed CC to copy and use any information or data created by the CC contained on the pages residing on the county site. Permission should be obtained to continue using donated material from other volunteers, if possible. Lookup volunteers should be contacted for permission to continue advising of their services. Once permissions are received the pages will be reconstructed by the new CC. The removed CC should be requested to turn over control of any Mail Lists or Automated Query Systems to the new CC or SC. Amendments to Guidelines and Procedures: These Guidelines and Procedures may be amended by petitioning to the SC by at least ten CC's who are eligible to vote. A majority vote of the eligible voters is necessary to amend the Guidelines and Procedures. This will be done using the INGEN-L list as a vehicle. As I've already told Betty, I'm easily overlooked as I'm pretty quiet here. Tom's resignation took me by surprise as well! I've already posted to Betty and to Joe that I would love to remain on as CO-CC (note the emphasis on CO) as I really don't feel qualified regarding the county to take it on solo. No Lori - this was human error on my part and I errored big time. My brain was on 'overload' and I had the counties mixed up. I have made a terrible mistake and I owe not only Holly and Joe both an apology but InGenWeb. Tom sent in his resignation of Dubois County last night and not thinking I placed it up for adoption. I had his counties mixed up. I thought Orange was co-coordinated with Holly but it was Dubois. I should have checked. Not only do I apologize to Holly but also to Joe who volunteered for Dubois County. The county will remain with Holly. And to InGenWeb - My apologies. Betty a/k/a - Kyseeker of Kentucky and Indiana
