I say the more exposure the better! I just recently "adopted" the Tippecanoe County page on the Indiana Biographies Project. With the help of a few volunteers, we are seeing that the biographies for Tippecanoe Co. will have three kinds of exposure. First we are posting them to the Tipp. co. mailing list, thereby making them searchable through the ROOTS-L archives. After posting to the mail list, they are added to GenConnect for those who search by using Surname Helper, and they are added to Indiana Biographies for even greater exposure because they are searchable with the search engine on Tippecanoe GenWeb. It's been additonal work, but the response has been great from the subscribers to my mailing list. Adina Watkins Dyer, CC TIPPECANOE CO. INGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~intippec/index.html
Hells Bells Family, I leave town for a few days and look what happens? You up 'n have all the action without me!!!!!!! BTW folks, Stillwater, MN is the best place to visit. Now I wanna live there. Cheryl
We have some very wonderful persons who have worked on Indiana things in so many various ways -- whether it is through the USGenWeb Project, the Biographies or Archiving various projects, volunteers who work with the Indiana USGenWeb county things (tombstone transcriptions, census, marriage, birth, death, divorces, wills, newspapers), or separate individuals with no connctions to anyone who have put up county pages on their own, etc. I don't think bickering over minor things is the answer and if we link to one another's sites it only helps the customers find things easier. Sure, we all have egos whether they are big or small, and we all want to be recognized in many fashions (even if just a thank you from one of our customers). And we WILL be recognized if we work together instead of bickering -- otherwise people will hear bad things and shy away from certain sites or not volunteer because of this bickering, etc. Does it REALLY matter if a non-USGenWeb site (such as the biography project) is linked to the major Indiana USGenWeb page or not??? I just wanted to say THANK YOU ALL -- whether we are under one organization or not is NOT SO IMPORTANT as whether we COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER and do the best we can for the customers (those who visit our webpages looking for their ancestry). So now that I have said my 2cents worth let me just say -- let's work together and not against each other. My best to all on this beautiful Sunday, Judy M. jmurphy@erinet.com Perry, Gibson and Spencer Cos, IN (USGenWeb Project)

Deb, I am going to put my two cents in here also, because I was the one that added the links to the SQOB page [Surnames, Queries, Obituaries, Biographies] that I developed back in 1996. I remember you message well, about the Indiana Biographies Project, since I was the #2 County in Indiana for the InGenWeb, behind Fred, and I remember having the rare distinction of being the #1 County in Indiana for the Indiana Biographies Project. Along with the marvelous help of Diana Flynn we quickly input 303 biographies. It was at this time that I added links to the SQOB page, as I was doing the biographies links. There were hardly any biographies posted then and if I found biographies posted in the Indiana Biographies Project, I added a link to the SQOB page [some of these links have been up for 2 years]. I apologize to the InGenWeb County Coordinators, if I have offended anyone, but my intent was to list anything that I thought would enhance our counties, not to upset any people. Deb, in your defense, you have a great website, and have done excellent work to pull all these biographies together. Again I apologize to the coordinators, as I was the one that originally posted the links. Now can we get back to our main effort here in genealogy and help in any way we can the people that constantly email us with genealogy requests and questions....... > Date: Sat, 01 May 1999 22:23:10 -0500 > From: Deb Murray <debmurray@worldnet.att.net> > Reply-to: debmurray@worldnet.att.net > Subject: Re: http://members.tripod.com/~suzysprague/CarrollCo/indexbios.html > To: INGEN-L@rootsweb.com > I realize that all of the updating on the state page and policy and > procedures have caused people to suddenly start looking at what is going > on but I have to say I'm a little upset at the stink going on over the > Biographies project. > > This project has been going on for years (before GenConnect boards > even!) and from time to time I have updated the INGenWeb list on the > counties adopted, urls for those pages, etc. The project was not > intended to "take over" for any of the GenWeb coordinators but to be a > supplement to those pages. If you notice the top of the page says Brown County Biographies, nothing about GenWeb. I'll be happy to modify that if it makes you feel better. I agree with Randy, our intent is to provide information, not get upset over trivial issues! I realize that all of the updating on the state page and policy and procedures have caused people to suddenly start looking at what is going on but I have to say I'm a little upset at the stink going on over the Biographies project. This project has been going on for years (before GenConnect boards even!) and from time to time I have updated the INGenWeb list on the counties adopted, urls for those pages, etc. The project was not intended to "take over" for any of the GenWeb coordinators but to be a supplement to those pages. In some cases the GenWeb coordinators offered to adopt the same counties in the Biographies project, in others they didn't feel they could take on any additional responsibilities so they didn't. I have always encourages our Biographies coordinators to put a link to the GenWeb pages and to contact the GenWeb coordinator for the county and let them know what the site was for the Biographies page so they could do the same if they wanted. I fail to understand why some GenWeb coordinators are suddenly so surprised and upset by these pages? Any "inconsistancy" arises from some counties having decided to do the GenConnect boards instead and we do not have coordinators yet for all Indiana counties (we're always looking if anyone is interested). The GenConnect boards are great but they have one problem, once the information is archived some people can't seem to figure out how to find and view the information or they think what they've submitted is gone and resubmit. I find this to be a problem on my query boards but it beats doing them manually. If this is such an issue just leave the link for the Biographies project and don't link them individually. We're getting plenty of hits with the existing link, lots of submissions (we're up to almost 6,000 bios online) and have had a number of counties adopted recently. It isn't going to hurt the Bios project not to have those links and I'm getting tired of all the "excited" e-mails on the subject! Deb D. Fulton and LaGrange Counties are here!
Hello, I just went to the Indiana page and found that the Bios link for Lake County has disappeared after Betty spent half the night trying to fix it. Lake county Biographies always have, and hopefully always will be, at : http://users.rootsweb.com/~inlake/lkbios.htm I'm the CC for Lake co GenWeb and the Lake Co Bio Project so that they'll be kept together. Feel free to put the Bio link back on there as I volunteered for these projects to give people seeking their roots the most info they can possibly get. Greetings All: I have been watching the flow of email here. The guidelines look good. I think there should be as much "agreed to" standardization as possible in regards to content. The CC should always control the format. The format should enhance and draw attention to the content. I have noticed that Carroll county has been abandoned. I am assuming that a new CC would have to start from scratch? Is that correct? If there is a need here to pick up Carroll, I am interested. Dear Betty, After reading the emails to me, I just went to the state page to see if you had turned off the link to the bio for Carroll County yet......and found Carroll County is an Orphan....? If the bio link was turned off, I was going to turn my site back on, but guess someone thought they'd fix me, and THAT's okay too, just another strange way of handling things. Sincerely, Darilee

When I saw the post come across the Indiana list about the Biographies Project about a month ago (yeah, I even got in late...it's been there for quite a while) I rushed to the Bio project page to check the status on the Lake County Bios (I'm the CC for Lake Co) and it was up for adoption....of course I adopted it because I already had about 15 bios on the Lake County GenWeb page. I also saw that Newton co was up for adoption. Then checked back a couple weeks later and it still was. I checked the Newton Co GenWeb page and he hadnt done anything towards putting bios up...he is doing more important things like census...thats a LOT bigger than biographies. Gotta locate someone (census) BEFORE finding out what their personal life was like (bios). But, I figured that Biographies were also important to a genealogist...who wants just names and dates to give their children?? So, I adopted Newton county biographies. Now, between him doing census, and me posting biographies...people with roots in Newton county can find a lot more information! And isnt that WHY we all adopted anything in these projects??? To give as much info to people as possible? Regardless of rules and regulations regarding wording for the project...I changed the intro for the Newton Co Bio page to read: "I am Kathy Huish and I am the coordinator for the Newton Co., Indiana Biographies." And: "If you would like to volunteer to coordinate a county biography project please contact the Indiana State Biography Coordinator Deb Murray" I simply added the word "biography" in the appropriate places. And it's had a link to the Newton County GenWeb since the day I put it up...it's called cooperation. And if everyone could cooperate...we'd help a lot of people out there! I also sent a post to the indiana bio list suggesting that other bio coordinators do this also. Union County is here and growing . http://www.geocities.com/heartland/woods/9061 Kris Bain Just would like to know??? Now what the required links.?????
Another Request <duck> I noticed in the Bio Links of InGenWeb SQOB there are links to the Indiana Biography Project County Bio's.. If you would like these taken off of your link please contact me and I will remove them from the InGenWeb pages. I feel these should actually be links provided by the Coordinator themself and this is probably upsetting to the coordinator's.. Betty a/k/a - Kyseeker of Kentucky and Indiana

First, here is a big hug for Darilee {{{{O}}}} and a happy face :) too! I just want to say, secondly, that we do have our own INGenWeb logo. It is attractive and I like it! All of our 92 counties are accurately illustrated inside an accurately drawn state geographical shape! Being from Southwest Indiana, I have noticed Indiana's southern border (along the Ohio River) to not resemble anything close to its actual configuration on most maps drawn for Indiana. The logo is plainly marked with "INGenWeb Project". Although it is true that the Indiana Biography Project has a similar logo - it uses the same state (go figure!) <grin> - the words on it are plainly marked "Indiana Biographies." Remember that anyone can make a county genealogy site, but only an authorized INGenWeb Project County Coordinator can proudly display the INGenWeb Project Logo on their county genealogy site and be a part of the INGenWeb and USGenWeb Projects. Darilee, no one has replaced you as an INGenWeb Project County Coordinator. Someone does have a biography page for your county, however - ask them to put a link to your site. If you do not want to maintain bios on your site - put a link on your page to theirs - and suddenly you have a volunteer to help you maintain genealogical data for your county!
