So it cannot be assumed >that all CCs were made aware of the Indiana Bios Project at the time of its >inception. You're right here....not all were made aware through Indytalk because some were not subscribed. Since INGEN-L didn't archive back when I was SC for the Bios (I believe we may have still been on dsenter back in July/August 1997), I will not attempt to state for sure that I sent through both lists (although I do recall.....), but I know I sent through numerous other lists....many people were made aware of the project. >I remember the day I discovered it linked from the main state page and was >quite surprised that the county I host for INGenWeb was already taken. >When it went up for adoption recently, I decided to link to it rather than >adopt the county Bios project. >I have since started a GenConnect Bios board for my county because I >believe that system, with its worldwide index, is more widely known and >accessible. Ok...I may see a glimmer of a point here....but, I don't think anyone would mistake one for the other considering the logos posted, the Coordinators names at the top of the pages, etc....I still don't see the point in getting *This* upset. >The problem is lack of communication. Is that still INDYTALK's purpose or has it changed? When I started the Indiana Biographies project I didn't have time, nor would I have had the desire, to try to find everyone from every county in Indiana who *may* be interested in coordinating a Co., or linking to one. I did post to numerous lists, including ROOTS-L, Indytalk, Kentuckiana-L, and I'm sure the information went through the Kentucky lists, to name only the few I'm sure of. Many people were made aware of the Biography project, and those who were not on any lists, only needed to go to INGenWeb Main page to see the link and banner (banner since has been replaced by a link). I just don't feel that all of this is worth complaining about. Atleast not to the point of giving up a county. If there is a complaint about a link, simply e-mail the person who posted it and politely ask for a revision. You'll catch more bees with honey! ;-) Dee

    3. Let me point out that not all Indiana CCs subscribe to INDYTALK. I, for one, do not, and there are probably many others. So it cannot be assumed that all CCs were made aware of the Indiana Bios Project at the time of its inception. I remember the day I discovered it linked from the main state page and was quite surprised that the county I host for INGenWeb was already taken. When it went up for adoption recently, I decided to link to it rather than adopt the county Bios project. I have since started a GenConnect Bios board for my county because I believe that system, with its worldwide index, is more widely known and accessible. Someone mentioned that its main shortcoming is that after a while, the list of postings disappears and many people don't seem to know how to search it. The way I get around this is by making a link from the county site to each new bio that is posted. So far, it works because there aren't that many bios. :) I don't think Darilee was saying that the Bios project should not exist at all; I believe she was mainly upset that the link had been provided on the SQOB page as if it were a link from her site. Didn't she say she may have linked to it herself, had she known about it? The problem is lack of communication. Sometimes I think important discussions take place on INDYTALK that do not come across on INGEN-L. When I unsubscribed from INDYTALK, it was because it was supposed to be the place for "chit-chat" and I just couldn't handle that many more messages in my already massive inbox. Is that still INDYTALK's purpose or has it changed? "requires posting" means that when you get information (that is suitable for your county either gathered by you or sent to you by an interested contributor) you need to "post" or "upload" by an ftp type program (or have someone else "post" this beneficial information to your website or to another page and link to it from your website. Lori, this is a very simple statement stating that this is a website of a genealogical nature that concerns this one particular county. I do not think it has some sinister or demanding nature to it as you seem to read into it. Any word in this entire document can be twisted by anyone. Please take the sentence in its entirety. JGW

"Maintaining an INGenWeb County web site requires posting information that is beneficial to genealogical researchers concerning the county." It simply means that the type of information that should be posted on INGenWeb pages should be helpful to *Genelogical* researchers - not information for Sports fans, Geologists, Bankers, how to repair automobiles, etc. It also states that the information concerns that county in Indiana and not information about New York City, Hardin Co., KY, or Japan. And it is suggested that this information ought to be of benefit (helpful) to the genealogist. "requires posting"

    3. Whoa!! Wait a minute.... We can't stop anyone else from creating *whatever* project they want to start. We do not own the internet, and we can't take away others rights to websites simply because we don't like what they're doing. (If we could I could think of many I would like to remove, and none have anything to do with genealogy) We also cannot stop anyone from creating a link to our site, this would be similar to banning the Telephone books. I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and think about what they're saying. Darilee, are you asking the US Biographies project to close up shop? If so, what about all the biographies they have spent long hours posting? Do you feel they should just give up everything they have been working on all this time and hand it over to another project? If so, turn the tables...what if they asked us to close it up? Also, what about the many USGenWeb volunteers who do not want to post biographies, or simply don't have time? I would think most CC's would be appreciative of this. One more resource for all of the genealogists on-line....isn't that why we're here? To help them...not take things away! I started the Indiana Biographies Project. I sent numerous messages through Indytalk asking for volunteers. I received responses from many of the INGenWeb volunteers, and the first 15 or so volunteers started right away. Jerry Mounts was our first volunteer to go on-line with his pages. Just my two cents worth.....please remember, we can't tell someone they can't make a site on whatever they want....if someone else starts a Crawford Co. site, I'm not going to get mad and throw a tantrum...I'll e-mail the person and talk to them about a joint effort....helping each other, not trying to shut each other down. BTW, Kailyn is doing great! She's up to 3lbs 8 oz...we're hoping to have her home in a few weeks! :-) (Maybe when she comes home I'll have the time to finish my transcribing and posting all of the information I have for Crawford, including Biographies....maybe not, LOL...but I'll get it done...slowly, but surely! ;-)) Thanks Dee
