Nel Hatcher and Jack Litmer posted surnames to the list indicating they were researching the COOKs. I may also be related to the COOK family. This possibility is based on the following reasoning, so bear with me while I lead you down the path. My gg grandmother was Sarah PATTY b. 1816 IN. She married Joseph WOOD in 1835 in Liberty, IN (Union County - part was Franklin County in 1820). I believe her father to be James PATTY f.c. 1830 Union Co. (p 226), f.c. 1820 Franklin Co. (p 214). I further believe James is related to the South Carolina PATTYs; however, I haven't made a connection. I have eliminated all but Charles PATTY b. 1753 as his father. I do think James migrated to Indiana from South Carolina with the COOKs sometime before 1820. In 1820, this James PATTY lived very close (same census page) to several COOKs, Including Isaac (Liberty Twp., also p 214). There were quite a number of COOKs that lived in this immediate area. They were: another Isaac (p 213), James (p 287), Joseph (p 211), Thomas (p 213), Wright (p 205) and Zimre (p 213). I believe that all came in the early 1800's Quaker migration from South Carolina. They are recorded in the monthly meeting notes of that faith (Union Co. SC). In trying to identify the possible spouse of James PATTY, I look to the women of the COOK family as prime candidates; because of proximity, same faith and common birthplace (SC). Eliminating those that are married or with a large age difference leaves Phoebe COOK as a likely candidate. Phoebe b. 1789 SC was the daughter of Eli COOK and the sister of Isaac COOK (same f.c 1820 page as James Patty). To date I have not been able to find Phoebe's spouse or link her to James PATTY. I have explored the Quaker archives at Earlham University as well as many documents at both Brookville and Liberty. I have also searched sources available at the Indiana State Library, South Carolina Archives, and the various pertinent counties in South Carolina, Indiana and Ohio. Does anyone have any information regarding these persons and their relationships that I have supposed? Any suggestions? Thank You Don
