In regard to the John Peter Schmitt - do you know if he had a sibling? I have a Justin Pierre Schmitt in New Albany. I know he had a brother Peter, that lived there also. Justin Schmitt 1830-1917, buried in St. Mary's cemetery in New Albany. Justin and his brother Peter came over from France together. I don't have any information on their parents.
