J.H. Lemon Coroner Philip Smith was a carpenter 63 years of age, born in Lanesville, Harrison co., Indiana and son of Thos. A. and Kate (Wiggins) Smith. December 4, 2003 Dear Barbara, I was looking at your Smith genealogy. I am a direct descend of Philip Smith. His first marriage was to Julia Cline. After she passed away he married Margaret R. Routh Twomey. Margaret's first husband had passed away. She brought 3 boys with her. You have Effie Pearl Smith b. March 30, 1878 and Bertha Mae Smith b. August 30, 1879 as Julia's children. These girls were Philip and Margaret's girls. They also had another girl named Virginia Corinne b. May 22, 1881. Margaret died July 1884 of stomach cancer. Philip put the girls in the Cornelia Memorial Children's Home. The records say that "he could not take care of such young children being an old man". No other family could or would take the girls into their homes. My gggrandmother was Bertha. The girls were all adopted into different homes. The records are at the New Albany Floyd Co. Library. I believe this is why he commited suicide. I have an old photo of Margaret. If I can be of any help, please let me know. I live in Clark Co., Indiana which is next to Floyd Co.
