Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3h.2ADE/2037 Message Board Post: Web site update 3/11/05 http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/ The Historic Atlas Series has been updated to include township and precinct level atlases from Pennsylvania and Kentucky. By popular request, we are currently digitizing more of these kinds of atlas and map data, and will be adding more in the coming weeks. Kentucky: http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/ky_map/ky_index.html Pennsylvania: http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/pa_map/pa_index.html At the present, atlas CD's are offered from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Missouri, West Virginia and Virginia will be added later this year so please feel free to check back often. The Historic Atlas Series may be an invaluable aid to Genealogists, Historians and researchers in search of 19th century places and place names. Many early property owners are indicated on the township and precinct level maps making these a great resource for identifying 19th century land ownership. Each atlas includes the following 19th century features: * roads, railroads and canals * cities, towns and villages * post offices and government sites * one-room schoolhouses, churches and cemeteries * rivers, streams and ferries * industrial sites, furnaces and mills * early homesteads and farms * land ownership - and much, much more Details on early maps are often difficult to read and these are no exception; however, by virtue of high resolution Adobe PDF formatting, map documents may be inspected at high levels of magnification without additional digital distortion; something that simply cannot be accomplished with paper reproductions and photocopies. The Adobe Acrobat Reader for MS Windows is needed to view, zoom, pan and print from the PDF map images, and is included free on each CD. No other software is necessary. The map data has been created and configured using the Adobe Acrobat Reader (6.0) for MS Windows (98, 98SE, XP, NT and 2000). The maps may be viewed in earlier versions of the software as well; however, optimum use of the data can be expected using the Adobe Reader 6.0 that is included on each CD. Typed by Lora Radiches: 2-25-2005 Surnames in the biography of Theodore Deming are: Deming, Russell, Dorsey, Mitchell, Hartwell, Woodward, Anderson, Kauffman, Lutz, THEODORE DEMING was especially well known in Southern Indiana, his residence during the greater part of his life having been at New Albany. He was born January 12, 1850, and died April 12, 1926, at the age of seventy-six. His parents were Theodore and Sarah (Russell) Deming. His father was a New York man who went south and taught school and later entered the shoe business and built up a very satisfactory trade at Knoxville , Tennessee. He left that city during the war and reestablished himself at New Albany, Indiana, where he continued his work as a shoe merchant until his death. He was the father of a large family of children, Mary A., Henrietta, Charles, James, Scott, Theodore, Sarah E., Oregon, James, George and William. The parents of these children are buried at New Albany. Theodore Deming had his first school advantages at Knoxville, Tennessee. He helped in his father’s store and also carried newspapers, at an early age learning the fundamentals of business. When he was fifteen years old he enlisted in the northern army, but the war soon ended and he returned to his home at New Albany. He was a merchant in that city and later took up insurance and became superintendent of The Prudential Insurance Company of Newark, New Jersey, doing business in Indiana. He had been retired from business for several years before his death, which came suddenly at Pittsburg while he was en route to the home office at Newark, New Jersey. He was a Republican and a member of the Christian Science Church for many years, filled all the chairs in the New Albany Lodge of Masons, and also filled chairs in the Knights of Pythias. He is buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery. Mr. Deming married Mary C. Dorsey, daughter of Frank and Eliza (Mitchell) Dorsey, who had liv! ed at Lebanon, Kentucky, before going to New Albany. Mrs. Deming now resides at 3244 Kenwood Street in Indianapolis. She has had six children. The youngest, Brent H., is deceased. Alice is Mrs. C. L. Hartwell. Lillian married Curt B. Woodward. Theodora is the wife of Dr. F. P. Anderson, and has a son, William T. Winfield S. married Zoe Kauffman. Shirley A. married Fern Lutz, a native of Ohio, and they have a son, John E. Deming.

I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don‘t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. Typed by Lora Radiches: 2-25-2005 Surnames mentioned in the biography of Harry V. Brown are: Brown, Paquette, Scott, HARRY V. BROWN. Among the younger generation of citizens of Floyd County who by conscientious service and the application of native ability have contributed to the good government and advancement, few have better records than Harry V. Brown, of New Albany. Seriously disabled while serving his country as a soldier during the World war, he was incapacitated by his injuries for a long period, but upon finally recuperating began his connection with public affairs, and after serving ably in the Legislature was elected in 1928 to the office of county recorder, a position which he fills at this time. Mr. Brown was born at New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana, January 28, 1897, and is a son of Robert Manning and Anna (Paquette) Brown. His grandfather, a native of England, ran away from home at the age of fourteen years, boarded a vessel for the United States, and after spending several years in the East came to Indiana, arriving about 1825. He married a Miss Scott, who was b! orn in this state, and they rounded out their lives on a farm in Floyd County. Robert Manning Brown was born at New Albany, where he was reared and educated, and as a youth began working in a woolen mill, in which he rose to a foremanship. He married Miss Anna Paquette, who was born at Adrian, Michigan, and they became the parents of nine children. Harry V. Brown attended the grade schools of New Albany, and as a youth became clerk in a general store, a vocation which he followed for four years. He was then employed by the Illinois Central Railway Company for two years, and was thus engaged when he enlisted in the United States Army for service during the World war. At the end of seven months he met with a severe injury which incapacitated him not only for further military service but for active labor of any kind, and for five and one-half years he was practically an invalid. This time was not totally wasted, for he applied himself to study and reading, and eventua! lly secured employment with the Interstate Public Service Commission, by which he was employed two years. There he had the opportunity of displaying his abilities and in 1926 was elected on the Republican ticket as representative from Floyd County to the State Legislature, in which he served during the session of 1927-1928, establishing a record for constructive and intelligent work. In 1928 he became his party’s candidate for the office of county recorder of Floyd County, to which he was elected for a term of four years. He has proved himself an able, energetic and thoroughly conscientious official, and has discharged his duties in a capable and expeditious manner. Mr. Brown is one of the active younger members of the Republican party in Floyd County, where he has hosts of friends and well-wishers. He belongs to the Masons, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the American Legion and the Calumet Club, and is a member of the Evangelical Church.
