John Andrew repotedly attending Hartsville University (4th created west of mountains). 1850 census has John "United Brethren Minister" where in 1844 Abram FLORA was listed "Church Trustee". My great grandfather, John Andrew, was born 5 Sept 1845, living next door to Frakes, who moved from Montgomery Co Ky to Indiana, then to Putman Co., IN. John & Amanda of Pennslyviana, united about 1832, had six known children: Josphine b.1833, Volney Pulaski, b.1834, Sarah Catharine, b.1836, Daniel Rice Boon, b.1838. Margaret Ann, b.1841 (may have been born in Harrison County) moving to Mauck's Port. I found on http://home.att.net/~Local_History/Harrison-Co-IN.htm Abram FLORA in 1844, and William H, Sr., James K. and Wm. H. Jr. later. Also on http://harrisoncountygenealg.com found Wm H. Richard, my 2nd great-grandfather, was born in Indiana, 19 March 1819, and died 11 October 1888. He is buried with his wife Mary Jane Hancock at Hancock Chapel Cemetery, Hancock Chapel, Harrison County, Indiana. He married Mary Jane Hancock d/o Mathew and Elizabeth Hooker Mills Hancock on 11 March 1847 in Harrison County. Mary Jane’s brother Major William Hancock attested to the ages of the bride and groom. William also mentioned in a letter to a cousin (Osburn Lamar Wilson) in the Mexican War that the groom (Richard Roberts) was from Floyd County, Indiana. Mary Jane, Richard and their children lived down on the farm in Blue River Township, Harrison County, Indiana among all the Hancocks. Richard and Mary Jane’s children: 1. James H. Roberts, born about 1846, appears only on the 1850 Census. So, Mary Jane and Richard’s first-born son must have died after 1850 and before 1860. 2. William Cravens Roberts was born 10 February 1848 who was last heard from in a postcard from Maysville, Colorado where he was with a party of 4 prospecting in Greenes Gulch (death date 24 October 1881). William's widow, Cora Alice Faucett of Orange County, Indiana, later married Elvet Beverly Rhodes of West Baden, Orange County, Indiana. 3. Sarah Ann “Sallie” Roberts (1852-1942) attended the National Normal School in Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio and later married widower Richard Devenish, proprietor of the Blue River Valley Farm. 4. Lydia Evaline “Evie” Roberts (1859-1897?) also attended the National Normal School (both sisters became school teachers). 5. Samuel Addison Roberts (1860-1934), also a “Normal” attendee and an 1882 graduate of the University of Louisville [Kentucky] Medical School. In a letter to Evie from Boulder Colorado (21 January 1883), Addison closes his letter with a reference to the infernal din that Willie (brother William C. died 24 October 1881; so who is this Willie?) is making by grinding coffee in a baking powder tin with the handled end of a hammer. Samuel Addison did return to Indiana’s changing seasons, married local girl Lillie Mae Hottel (d/o Anett Horner and Levi Pitman Hottel), became the father of three daughters, Ruth Virginia, Lillian Annette, and Polly Jean Roberts, and settled in Salem, Washington County, Indiana. Samuel and Lillie Mae’s oldest daughter Ruth Virginia Roberts married Thomas Michael Cavanaugh (whose great-grandparents are another brick wall). Ruth and Tom had a daughter, Helen Beatrice Cavanaugh, who married FBI special agent Carl Theodore “Ted” Renne of Clearwater County, Minnesota. Helen and Ted had three daughters - my sisters and myself. Curiously, the 1850 Harrison County, Blue River Twp. census lists a John Roberts, b. Pennsylvania with wife Jemima (nee Haynes/Haines) and children Lydia A. and Samuel, and Jemima’s sister Lucy Haynes (who later married next-door neighbor John Hancock). In addition, there is a Mary Emile Roberts born 31 January 1816 in Pennsylvania who married a Simeon Garriott in Floyd County, Indiana on 8 June 1847. They moved to Washington County, Mary’s parents were John Roberts and Lydda Cravens, both born in Pennsylvania. So, I wonder if anyone could shed light on Richard’s antecedents or have I just made up a family for my Richard Roberts with John and Lydda Cravens Roberts as the parents and Mary E. and John as his older siblings whose children coincidentally share the same names... Thanking you in advance, Sally Renne Murphy
According to The Indiana Southern Counties Collection Volume V indicating burials in the Fairview Cemetery, is listed the following: SOHN, Elizabeth Eilen; 12271; 45 yrs; b. Indiana; bur 1 Jun 1900; p4 r27 lot 8; Cancer of bowels; Dr. E. A. Severinghaus; Merker & Gwin (NADL 31 May 1900 p4 c2 Died at home 1534 Locust St.). Is there anyone who could check this out, or could get me a copy of the obit? If this is possible, e-mail me for charges etc., or the best place to write for this information. I am trying to prove if this Elizabeth may have been the wife of Andy Sohn, thus a daughter of Mary Sinex/JohnMartin with Mary Martin being a daughter of Elizabeth Sinex whose first husband was her cousin John Sinex and her second husband was Peter Z. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Doughten, Armstrong, Riley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3h.2ADE/2069 Message Board Post: Looking for information on the family of John S. Doughten who appears on the 1850 census in Floyd Co, IN. He is 62 years old and b. New Jersey. He has in his household Claudius, age 19, George M., age 16, Claurena M. age 11, Adele J., age 8, all b. IN and Martha Hollingshaw, b. NY. He is also on the 1840 census. In particular, I'm looking for the name of the wife or wives he had. One of his wives is probably the mother of Alexis Leroy Armstrong, who appears on the 1850 census in Davidson Co, TN, married to Mary Jane Riley. A man named Armstrong was supposedly first rector of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Wheeling, WV. His son was also supposedly a rector at a later time. One of these was possibly named John Armstrong. I am interested in this Armstrong family, particularly if either of these men were married and the names of their spouses. I am also interested in how these two Armstrong gentlemen are related to John Armstrong who was a physician in Jackson Co, WV. Dr. John Armstrong's will mentions sons Alexis Leroy Armstrong and William C. Armstrong, as well as his wife, K.S.D. Armstrong (probably Katherine Divine). Dr. John Armstrong was married at least once before to Mazella Cozart b. PA, in 1835. But Dr. John Armstrong would also have had to be married at least one more time to a woman born in France and possibly another time to a woman born in Virginia or England, according to information provided to census takers (see below). William C. Armstrong (b. VA about 1821) became a minister in Wisconsin. In 1880, he is age 59 in Waupaca, WI, and says he's b. VA, his father England and his mother, b. Virginia. His wife is Hattie, age 44, b. Vermont and daughter Mary S., age 31, b. IN. William C. Armstrong, age 49, appears on the 1870 census in Walworth, WI, with wife Harriet, age 36 b. Vermont, daughter Leontine, age 11, b. WI and son Claudine, age 8, b. WI. In 1900, Olandius Armstrong (probably really Claudius) appears in Oconto, WI, b. 1863, age 37, b. WI, father b. England, mother b. England. He is a physician, with wife, Emma, b. 1866, WI, and daughter Claudine, b. 1896, WI and son John William, b. 1899, WI. Claudine m. Herbert Lord, a civil engineer and they're in the 1930 census in Madison, WI, with son, Richard H. age 5, b. WI. Leroy Armstrong (b. VA about 1830) married Mary Jane Riley in Nashville, Davidson Co, TN in 1850. Leroy Armstrong had at least one half-sister, Adele Doughten Tatem (Mrs. Charles), of Moorestown, Burlington Co, NJ. Mrs. Tatem was b. 1842, IN, and appears in the household of John S. Doughten, b. 1788 in NJ, in Floyd Co, IN in 1850. There is no mother in this household, but there are siblings listed as Claudius, George M. and Claurena. However, her mother, presumably Leroy Armstrong's mother also, was b. in France, according to information on later census. There is another Adelle Doughten on the 1850 census in Burlington Co, NJ. She was b. 1827 or 1829 in NJ and married Nathan H. Buzby 5 Feb 1852 in Burlington, NJ. Would appreciate knowing anything about the Armstrong family connected with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and other Armstrong families who might be related. I have information on the descendants of Leroy Armstrong and Mary Jane Riley. Thank you.
Is there anyone on this list who has any information about the above cemetery? I am interested in the BYLAND name and there may also be HARKINS buried there. Thanks for reading this request, Roxanna in Ohio
