Abstracted from The New Albany Public Press Silver Grove Incorporation, The citizens of Silver Grove, for some time past were in doubt whether the town was legally incorporated or not. In order to settle the question satisfactorily the citizens appointed a committee to request Senator Gwin to write to the attorney general concerning the matter and the following is his answer: Indianapolis, Ind. April 9th, 1900 There was no law in 1886 that prohibited a town from being located within two miles of the city limits of an incorporated city. In fact in this city we have a town right in the city, with the city limits entirely surrounding it. I presume the impression got out from the fact that the police powers in cities extend, in some instances, four miles from the city; in other instances, two miles; but this does not affect the question involved in your letter. Very Truly yours, W. L. Taylor --from the Public Press 18 Apr 1900 p5 c2

In the 1880 census she is working as a servant and has a Jesse Leach living there also. I don't know how he is related but probably her son. In 1900 I found Nancy Grimes in St Louis, Mo and living there also was Margaret Leach. Nancy was my grandmothers aunt and Margaret was my grandmothers sister. Why they were in Missouir I have no idea! Anyway, Margaret died in 1902 of consumption and is buried in Fairview Cem. I can't locate Nancy after the 1900 census. If anyone has any information of her or her parents, it would be most appreciated.

Were county death records being kept that early and, if so, would they have included parents' names? > > ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: I am fairly certain that Eliza Ann was the older sister of William Nelson WHITLOCK (1826 to abt 1893) whose married Mary A. KERSNER, and who lived in Lafayette Township. Eliza Ann WHITLOCK married Hiram HOPPER in Floyd Co. on July 17, 1835. About two weeks later, on July 29, 1835 one William WHITLOCK married Julia Ann MONAGHAN (his second wife). This William was definitely the father of William Nelson WHITLOCK mentioned above, but I cannot determine the name of William WHITLOCK Sr.'s first wife, who would have been the mother of William Nelson WHITLOCK and, most likely, Eliza Ann as well. William, Sr. and his first wife were both born in VA abt. 1796, apparently married there, and show up in the 1820 census in Boone Co., KY, where Eliza Ann and William Nelson were both born. By 1830 the family was in Floyd Co. (Greenville), and shortly thereafter William Sr's first wife died. He then married Julia Ann MONAGHAN, and they both died abt. 1872 in Lafayet! > te Towship. > > > ============================== > Find your ancestors in the Birth, Marriage and Death Records. > New content added every business day. They immigrated form Switzerland in 1852 and lived in New Albany in the 1850's - 1870's. I know that my grandmother, Jospehine Juliot was born in New Albany on Oct. 2, 1866. She had seven siblings. I have found some of them on the 1860 and 1870 census records. But I am trying to find the church records of Holy Trinity to see when they were baptized. I need to find the name of the village Henry and Victoria came from in Switzerland and I am hoping it might be listed on the baptismal record. The siblings and birthdates are: Adeline - May 5, 1850 (born in Switzerland) Sylvester - 1855 Henry - Oct. 27, 1857 George- Dec. 10, 1854 Julia -( b. 1852, d. 1864) Mary - April 11, 1864 Josephine - Oct. 2, 1866 Frank - Jan. 23, 1869 Tha family moved to Pepin WI. sometime after 1880 but Sylvester retured to New Albany after he married.
