the cemetery assigns numbers to each plot/grave. that is their own record of the location for cemetery use only. some cemeterys are privately owned and some are county/state owned and each has their own rules. if there is no headstone they can locate the grave by the burial/plot number. they have their own map and a numbering system of each plot or burial which includes the vaults. when you bury someone they get information about the deceased person and that information is in their records. cemeterys have not always been up to par on record keeping and its up to them what information they need/want or have. i don't think they would release it unless you have reason to have the information or if you can provide that you are kin. i would also guess the person would have to be deceased for at least 50 yrs before releasing info unless you are kin because its info about the deceased and next of kin. all you can do is contact the cemetery and keep in mind, each cemetery is different, and ask them. Thanks, I have written them several times over the course of 30 years. Never once a reply, nor acknowledgement. I don't use a telephone due to hearing problems. I do have a distant cousin in New Jersey who is planning a trip to New Albany and I will be sending her this information. Thanks so very much. A burial number is just that. I is the listing in the burial register. Those listings are in the volumes Fairview Cemetery (there are 11) of those volumes, arranged by date. Burial numbers are entered by date. If the person died in March of 1886, they would have a higher burial number than a person who was buried in Febuary of that same year, but if the person was moved to or from another site, they would usually be given an additional number - a later number, and it would fall in order of the burials between the original burial number and the present number for that day. Sometimes, it is not mentioned that a person was moved to a location, sometimes it does. An entry would usually contain: Burial Number, name, age, death date, burial date, birthplace, residence at death, cause of death, dr., undertaker. Some years contain more info than others, but sometimes all you may see is "Mr. Sinex", Mrs. Jones' Child, "German child", "Old Man", age, but no other info and rarely not even a burial date. Did I confuse you? You might try Southern Indiana Genealogical for details of the books. Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2006 2:33 PM Subject: [INFLOYD] BURIAL NOS. Thank you. I am a direct descendant of Thomas Sinex who established the Thomas Sinex Family Vault in the early 1850s. Thank you Sue. I do have several of the Southern Genealogical Society publications and have used them extensively. What I was actually referring to was the sketch of the Sinex Vault giving dates & numbers indicating possibly something I could order through the County Clerk's office. Sandi, Are you referring to St. Mary's of New Albany or St. Mary of the Knobs at St. Mary? It seems that I accessed the list for St. Mary of the Knobs at one time in the past. If I can find the access again, I will send the link. I asked one of the Floyd Co, IN mailing list coordinators and she told me when the site was changed over a couple of years ago the info on St Mary's Cemetery was lost. I would love a couple of lookups. Thank you for your offer. Buchart and Lamke. If there are too many, please let me know and I'll ask for specific first names. I would really love a copy of the file you downloaded if that would be possible. Sandi

I did some web searching and it looks like it's been removed totally. The link for Floyd County, IN on rootsweb is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~infloyd/ There is a link on that page for the county coordinators, so maybe if you e-mail them that could answer the question of why this data was removed. The information that I saved at the time it was available was: St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, Floyd County, Indiana Cemetery Listing by Michael L. Dearing http://www.rootsweb.com/~infloyd/ But as I mentioned, this link is no longer valid. A few years ago, I downloaded most, if not all, of the information that was posted for St. Mary of the Knobs Cemetery, so if you have some specific surnames, I could take a look in my files and see what I have. Best Regards, Chris Breen

You are welcome. Let me give you a little advice and tell you how I found that. Sometime you need to vary your search. In your original posting you mentioned that one of the girls went by the name of Winona. I searched the index for Floyd county using only that first name. The result was that there were only two people with that name listed in the county. When I saw the similarity of the names Hauger and Hanger, I took a look and saw that the other people there were the ones you had listed as being in 1920. Good luck. Don
