    3. Correction to Sue's post (and I know she didn't mean St. Mary's). St. Mary's in New Albany (downtown) is still in operation. It was Holy Trinity Catholic Church that burned about 25 years ago. I think St. Mary's has records for both St. Mary's Cemetery on Charlestown Rd. and Holy Trinity Cemetery on Green Valley Rd.. I think those records are also at the Family History Center of the local Mormon Church on Slate Run Rd. Floyd County folks please correct me if I am wrong. Walker K. I found a news article of my g'g'gfather and 2 of his brothers mentioning Fort Reed. Their parents were William and Sarah (Coombs) Reed, married in Georges Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. After growing up, the three boys married; David Reed married Mary Herrod, James B Reed married Mary Peyton, and Joseph married Louisa (Smiley) Tucker Below is the article; The venerable James Reed, of New Albany, who is now making his home with his brother, David Reed, of Octagon, is very low with lung troubles. These brothers are the only ones left of a family of twelve children. Their father, William Reed, moved from Virginia to Kentucky in 1794, and from Kentucky to Indiana in 1800. James was born, April 1802 and David in March, 1804, making them respectively 85 and 83 years of age. When young they sepnt part of their time at Fort Reed, and saw more Indians than whites in their boyhood days. Their brother, Joseph Reed, was noted as the "Boy Indian Figher and Hunter." Joseph and David were born near the Ohio river, in Clarke county, Indiana. James was a ship carpenter and was on the last boat that came from New Orleans to Louisville, proceeding the opening of hostilities in 1861. David moved from Clarke county, Indiana to the farm on which he now lives, near Octagon, in 1850

J.H. Lemon Coroner Philip Smith was a carpenter 63 years of age, born in Lanesville, Harrison co., Indiana and son of Thos. A. and Kate (Wiggins) Smith. December 4, 2003 Dear Barbara, I was looking at your Smith genealogy. I am a direct descend of Philip Smith. His first marriage was to Julia Cline. After she passed away he married Margaret R. Routh Twomey. Margaret's first husband had passed away. She brought 3 boys with her. You have Effie Pearl Smith b. March 30, 1878 and Bertha Mae Smith b. August 30, 1879 as Julia's children. These girls were Philip and Margaret's girls. They also had another girl named Virginia Corinne b. May 22, 1881. Margaret died July 1884 of stomach cancer. Philip put the girls in the Cornelia Memorial Children's Home. The records say that "he could not take care of such young children being an old man". No other family could or would take the girls into their homes. My gggrandmother was Bertha. The girls were all adopted into different homes. The records are at the New Albany Floyd Co. Library. I believe this is why he commited suicide. I have an old photo of Margaret. If I can be of any help, please let me know. I live in Clark Co., Indiana which is next to Floyd Co.
