*** This is a retransmission of a message I sent to the list 2 days ago which may not have made it. Please forgive any duplication! *** A big thank you to the ten or so people who tried unsuccessfully to find Thomas and Nancy ALLEN for me in the 1850 census. It would appear that some combination of the following happened: 1. They avoided being enumerated ANYWHERE in the U.S.A. 2. They WERE enumerated but their names were so badly garbled as to defy transcribing and indexing. 3. Their ages were wildly misrecorded, miscopied, etc. My best guess as to Nancy's birth date is 1804; I don't have a clue as to Thomas. She would have married at 16, but that was no big deal in those days. I'm about 99% sure they were living in either New Albany or Greenville, as that's where all their kids were, including Thomas J. whom several of you noticed. I'll be contacting the Indiana State Library to follow up on some articles in the 1849-1889 New Albany newspaper data base. They may shed some light on Thomas. Thanks again! At one time I believe someone had sent me a list of newspapers and/or years they were published for the New Albany area and for some unknown reason I cannot find the list. Or if someone might know whether there would be "tidbits" in these newspapers during the above noted time frame of let's say a lumber merchant traveling to Philadelphia and back regarding business. Or to the east on business, whether he was just going, or what may have transpired upon his return. I am definitely going to have to write a book before I am through with my SINEX lineage. There is much speculation that Thomas SINEX (of the Thomas Sinex vault in Fairview Cemetery) and one Thomas SINEXON of Philadelphia being one and same person. Although each family had several children, they are spaced as to "accommodate" the traveling ways of this "one" man IF. A descendant of the Thomas SINEXON line is working with me on my Thomas SINEX line to "figure" this all out. The men have birthdays one year apart. The men died within 6 months of each other ALTHOUGH there is no record of the Thomas SINEXON death in Louisville, Kentucky nor anywhere else. The Philadelphia family had no contact with their Thomas SINEXON except supposedly through his brother John in Louisville/New Albany. Thomas SINEX also had a brother John in New Albany (the coroner). Now do you see why we need newspapers <grin> Thank you for any help that anyone can give us ~ ~ Antoinette (Tacoma, Washington)

Chuck, I could not find Thomas and Nancy in Floyd Co. Thomas Jr. (age 25) was in Greenville, however. Jack Ott
Dear Listers, Does anybody have access to an index to the 1850 census for Floyd county? I'm looking for Thomas and Nancy ALLEN, who may or may not have been living in New Albany. They would be somewhere around 50 years old. I found their son, also Thomas ALLEN, living in Greenville in 1850 & 1860, and Nancy living in Greenville in 1860 with some of her other kids. I believe Thomas senior died about 1855. I have access to the 1850 census via Heritagequest, which unfortunately hasn't indexed that year yet. New Albany covers 200+ pages so trying to find anybody by "browsing" is a monumental task. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Is the Merchants National Bank still in business in New Albany, Indiana? According to the copy of the Will that I have of Thomas Sinex he had stock in the Merchants National Bank of New Albany and this will was written in 1870. I have tried finding this doing a search but find them almost anywhere except New Albany. Does anyone have information referencing this bank still in operation, and if so, would you have an address in order that I might write them? Thank you. Antoinette (Tacoma, Washington)

I find the children as young adults in 1850 living in Putnam County but have no idea what happened in the years between. I can find no death records for Eli and his wife Rhoda Hurley nor any information as to when they might have left Floyd County. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kathleen Leveroni

I got a reply from my friend who is going to do some additional research on the death date and let me know. Of course, the death certificate will be the answer for sure. If I find out any thing, I will let you know and if you get info, I would appreciate knowing. I noticed the Catherine in the 1910 census and decided that it was Sarah K. the K being for Katherine. When I was checking the 1880 census, I was using the Family Search website and it was down for maintenance, so I was not able to check it for the Baxter family. So I was able to add Effie and Nannie to my list from your information. There is almost a five year span between Effie and Roy so perhaps one is missing there. I subscribe to ancestry.com but I find I prefer my library card access to Heritage Quest which has most of census records except 1880. If any thing new comes up, I'll let you know. Jafra

I realize there are many possible explanations for Belle Baxter claiming widowhood. Before I look into a lot of other possibilities, I think a search for Louis' obituary and his death certificate are the best places to start. If there is one of these to support the 1938 death date, then at least we will have the date confirmed. If that fails, then just in case the tombstone or cemetery book date is wrong, maybe a death date of Oct 19, 1908 should be tried? Anyhow I would appreciate it if you would keep me informed of anything you find. Louis is the brother of my 2nd great grandfather. I plan to send for the death certificate. I did see that Belle Baxter claimed 16 children and 11 living. She claimed the same numbers in both 1900 and 1910, meaning she had no more children after 1900. This also might indicate Louis' absence. I'd say divorce or death. Hospitals and jails are enumerated in the censuses, and Louis by any of his names and initials is not in the index for both the 1910 and 1920 censuses. Of course pages are sometimes unreadable. I have found 10 of Belle's children. It gives his birthdate as 9/17/1854 and his death date as 10/19/1938. He is buried in Section 2o LOT 264 Grave 2. Drusilla Belle (Hand) Baxter was born 4/10/1859 and died 11/21/1915. She is buried in Section 2o Lot 264 Grave 3. The only explanation I can think of is that the couple may have separated for some reason and she passed herself off as a widow. This does not seem likely because they are buried on the same Lot. Could he have been incarcerated or in the hospital for the mentally ill which was in Madison, IN? His wife would not want either of these made public. There is a good possibility that there might be an obituary available. The Jeffersonville IN Public Library would be the one to contact. Their Indiana Room has lots of obits on microfiche. I have a friend in IN. I will write to him and see if he could check the library for an obit. Their sons Eddie Clark Baxter and Raymond Garner Baxter, Sr are also both buried in the S-burg Cemetery as well as their wives and some of their children. Did you notice that Drusilla Belle Baxter says on 1910 census she had born 16 children and 11 on them were still living? I can only account for 8 living. Regards, Jafra Schireman

It appears to be incorrect. I started looking for Louis and family in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. He was in Madison Co., IN in the 1900 census, but in 1910 his wife "Belle" is the head of household, and she states she is "widowed". Belle and children were in Clark Co., IN in 1910. This is telling me that Louis died between 1900 and 1910 instead of 1938. Could you recheck your source for that death date please? Also could you give me the source of the dates for Louis and Belle? Thanks for any help.
