My friends just bought the former home of Edwin Hawks, who owned that furniture company. This home was built around 1898 when the furniture company was still going strong. The home features beautiful wood-work of birds-eye maple. During this same time, the extended Hawks' family owned quite a number of businesses in Goshen- real estate, banking, hardware, milling etc. But Edwin's brother Frank Hawks saw he had too many cousins to compete with, and left around this same time to Wisconsin and married into the toilet paper dynasty. Latger the family would move to California. Frank's son Howard became a famous movie director in hollywood - The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo, High Noon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Eldorado, Hatari, The Thing..and dozens more. A few books witten about Howard tell a little about the Hawks family in Goshen, including a little about the furniture company.
