Elliott enlisted from Elkhart Co, IN on 12/6/61 and was mustered into Co. A, 48th Indiana Infantry. Date and method of discharge not given so given the fact he died in 1865 might indicate he was in a hospital away from his Regt. when he died. The 48th fought in the Vicksburg Campaign, Iuka, Corinth, Jackson, Champion's Hill, Vicksburg all 1863 and Kinston, NC in 1865. Check <www.civilwardata.com>

I am going to try to verify death information by asking for help with a visual check of his tombstone. Perhaps I have the dates wrong. I have also thought that perhaps he enlisted under a different name (proper baptised vs common?). I think I have to make a trip to the National Archives and look through records myself. I have been frustrated by the mail research service there (brief, uninformative information) but maybe it's just me. There is no substitute for doing it yourself. Mandy

He enlisted from Kosciusko Co. 9/24/61, reenlisted 1/1/64, transferred to Co. E 12/3/64 and was mustered out 11/25/65. Another John H. Long enlisted 8/2/62 from Leesburg, IN and mustered into Co. M, 5th Indiana Cavalry. "Date and method of discharge not given. No further record". Perhaps as you suggest he died and was not noted on company records. Check with Natl Archives for his military record. Also checked 48th Indiana Inf. and found two Longs, both of whom died. Jacob d. 10/6/62 and William d. 1/31/64

The two John Long's I found that are the closest are: John Long Residence: Elkhart Co Enlisted as a private on 24 September 1861 in Company I, 30th Infantry Regiment 24 September 1861 John H Long Residence: Leesburg, Indiana (Kosciusko) Enlisted as a Private on 02 August 1862 in Company M, 5th Cavalry Regiment Indiana on 02 August 1862. I don't think he was in the cavalry because the uniform he is wearing in his picture appears to be an infantry uniform. Jacket is dark blue 4 button and hip lenth, pants are light blue, he has a black slouch hat was as common as a Union Kepi. The problem is, I have not found out if one of these two match. One difficulty is that he likely died in a hospital and his death was not linked to his regimental roster information as a result. I am at a loss. Mandy

Otts, Hapners, Judays, Rookstools) I want to find out what unit John fought in but I have had a terrible time figuring it out. A biography of his father (Memoirs of Elkhart Co.) says he died of illness and his body was shipped home to be buried. I would appreciate any help, I am at a loss. Mandy Colgan
