Surnames: Hostetler Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vh.2ADI/2171 Message Board Post: PFC Joseph O. Hostetler of the United States Marines from Elkhart County Indiana was killed November 20, 1943, while serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We found this reference in the Indiana State Library World War II database but we do not have a copy since the microfilm is not available to us here in the islands. Any help obtaining this sure would be helpful. We also welcome any information that would lead us to find the family of this Indiana hero. Hello, I am a retired American residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. A year ago we visited the memorial as visitors but came home with a mission in our hearts. As we gazed over the beautifully manicured acres and the 17,202 American graves, it was obvious only a few families had ever visited their graves. I stepped into the soft grass and focused my camera on one of the white crosses, a grave of an Ohio soldier. A strange calmness was in the air as I walked a few more steps and a cross of an Indiana soldier lay square in my path. The letters of the inscription on the marker was bolder than ever, here lay a soldier from my home state. At that moment a quiet brainstorm aroused my humble thoughts. I wondered if I could locate any of the families of these men. My stride became more defined and within a few moments I had located and photographed eight more graves. Since those gut-wrenching but touching moments we have energized our efforts in finding the families of these American men from Indiana. We have located well over 100 and have delivered the FREE photographs to them via email. Please visit our website and see the men we have honored and the families we have assisted in finding a more genuine closure of a horrible tragedy. http://fizkid.tripod.com/ Our success in finding the families was the result of journalists, amateur genealogists, historians, historical societies, librarians and lots of wonderful Hoosiers and those with Indiana ties across America. During our search we have also reached families from other states as well and have filled special requests for photos from the Manila American Cemetery. We presently have photographed only the graves of the Indiana soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen; however we have photographed all of the names that are engraved on the "Tablets of the Missing". We offer them free of charge to anyone who asks. We ask for your help in finding their families. We understand this is a genealogy board but we do not need immediate genealogy in that form, we need leads to find the families. Please become one of our special volunteers today and find the family of an Indiana serviceman from near your home. A list of the men from your Indiana county is available, free and all you must do is request it. Dave and Apple Dwiggins San Pablo City, Philippines

In the 1900 Census I found Harmon Bringolf, b. March 1867 in Switzerland, a widower, listed as the brother-in-law and living in the household of Jacob and Hannah (Null) Weldy. Does anyone know who his wife was? Was she Hannah's sister? I have other men listed as the spouses for Jacob's sisters. Anna Belle Emery

M.D., J.H. Colton, New York, 1852 http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/1852_IN_index.html This is a digitally reproduced version of Indiana: in Relation to its Geography, Statistics, Institutions, County Topography Etc.; with a Reference Index to Colton's Maps of Indiana, 1852. Historians, genealogists and researchers of mid 19th century Indiana will find the vast amount of research material in this book and its accompanying maps invaluable. The 144 page book is a companion to the 6 segment series of Colton's Maps of Indiana included on this CD. The book contains topographical and historical profiles of the cities, towns and villages of Indiana in 1852. Indiana places and place names, many of which no longer exist in contemporary literature or on current maps, are identified and discussed in this early Indiana resource. Excerpts from the book advertisement: This little book has been prepared to accompany COLTON'S MAPS OF THE STATE OF INDIANA, and to illustrate the geography, statistics, and institutions of that important portion of the American Union. The descriptions, though brief and concise, embrace nevertheless a great mass of information useful not only to the immigrant settler, but also to those who, from long residence in the state, may be entitled to the distinguished title of "citizen." The descriptive portions of the work have been chiefly compiled from the publications of the most recent writers; but a large mass of information has also been derived from the labors and inquiries of the publisher's agents, and from numerous private sources, all of which has been incorporated. The statistical matter is chiefly based on the census of 1850, the official returns of the several departments of the federal and state governments, and from the reports of companies incorporated within the state. Every available source of accurate information, indeed, has been consulted, and the publisher has no hesitation in sayi! ng that there is no other work on the same subject, and within the same compass, that furnishes so much valuable information as is contained herein... ..maps are engraved in the best style of art, and are colored in a handsome manner. A REFERENCE INDEX, by the aid of which any place on the maps may be readily found, is appended to this work. I noticed that your Jane Melissa Mills was born in 1837. I have a Robert Bruce Mills born in 1838 , on his death certificate its says his fathers name was Orlando Mills. I have found an Orlando Mills in the 1840 NY census , but he seemed to disappear after that. Roberts mother was listed as Mary Hiller. I found a person who has her ancestor listed as his father as Orlando Mills also with a different mother too. But her ancestor was born in 1836. So if you have extra info on Orlando I would be most interested to see if any of your data combines with mine. What states yours was in or anything. Thanks in advance. Susan

Hi everyone! I've just recently joined the Elkhart County list. I've made several trips to Elkhart County as it is only a few hours from my home in SE Michigan where I live. My primary interest in Elkhart County is the Boomershine Family. I've written two books on the descendants of the immigrant Henry Boomershine, who migrated into Southwestern Ohio, primarily Montgomery County (Dayton area). One of Henry's son's, Peter Boomershine and his wife, Margaret Catherine Rumbarger migrated to Elkhart and many of their descendants are still there today. Peter & Margaret are both buried in Benton Lutheran along with quite a few of their descendants. Peter's stone was broken and laying on the ground but as of my last visit in 2004 there was no sign of the stone at all. Margaret's stone is not broken in pieces but was broken off and was lying flat with grass grown up around it. If you find yourself running into any Boomershine's I would love to hear from you - I'd be happy to share whatever I have that might help anyone who needs it. I do track the intermarrying families so you never know what I may have. I am including a family group sheet on Peter and Margaret and their children. (see below my signature file) If you find any connections to ANY OF THESE FAMILIES I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for reading my note!
