Thanks for the response Sally. I may have to go to NARA for some information. I hate to do that since I have no idea if these men are same ones listed as having joined these regiments. I don't even know for sure if they were in the Civil War. But it appears that their mother was getting a pension, so maybe. Is anyone on this list a Civil War Buff? I need some advice please. There are two brothers, ELLIS & JOHN CLARK. Both were in Elkhart. They seem to have disappeared after 1860, so I think they may have volunteered for the war. I have some Regiment information as follows: 9th Infantry Regiment of Indiana. There is an Ellis Clark who enlisted on 5 Sep 1861 as a private. In 1862 he deserted the regiment on Oct 10 in Louisville Kentucky. 2nd Cavalry Regiment of Indiana. A John Clark enlisted 19 Nov 1861 as a private. He died on 15 Dec 1862 of wounds received in battle. This was also in Louisville, Kentucky. My problem is how to connect this information with my Ellis and John? How can I determine if these are the same men? Any suggestions? Virginia
For the past 10 years or so I have been searching for the parentage and ancestors of Washington ADAMS born in Ohio in 1811. We find him in the 1840 and 1850 census in Indiana. In the history of Lagrange County Indiana he is found as one of the early settlers even at that young age. In the 1850 census he is shown with his wife Laura (Hill) ADAMS and their three children: Mary J. Adams, Moses Adams and Martha Adams. Laura HILL was the daughter of Dr. Moses HILL. She was born in NY. In 1832 Washington ADAMS married Laura HILL in Lagrange county, IN. In the 1830 census for Elkhart Indiana there is a John ADAMS shown with his family. One was a male between the ages of 15-20. This would match my Washington ADAMS age group. Under the John ADAMS listing is the name Asa ADAMS. Or at least it looks like "Asa". on the next page of that census is shown the Dr. Moses J HILL family. I have checked out two Washington Adams' and ruled them out. One was in Warren County, Ohio and the other was in Muskingkum County, Ohio. Both of these died in those counties. My Washington Adams died in Mt Carroll, IL in 1863. I feel that the John Adams who was shown in the 1830 census in Elkhart County, IN is the most promising parentage of my Washington, but I cannot find where he came from. He was between the age of 50-60 in 1830 and does not appear in the 1840 census - most likely passed on. Is there anyone out there tracing that John Adams family or the Asa Adams family???
Hi! Does anyone have any information on a Jacob HOLDEMAN b. 5 /11/1788 d. 12/14/1867. I found him in the Elkhart Co. Cemeteries book vol. 1 page 359 and am trying to connect him to my wife's Holderman family in Elkhart Co., IN. I am trying to locate a Jacob HOLDERMAN (or Holdeman, Haldeman, Halderman, even Hulderman) who arrived in Harrison Twp. in 1848 from Holmes Co., Ohio, having arrived in Holmes Co., Ohio from PA in 1812. Jacob arrived in Indiana in the company of his son, John and Anna Seese Holderman (and their nine children). An educated guess is that my wife's Jacob Holderman was born about 1776-1783, based on the Ohio Census of 1820. Jacob does not show up in the Harrison Twp. Census in 1850, two years after his arrival in 1848. His son, John appears as HULDERMAN with his wife and children, but no Jacob. It appears that Jacob might have died between 1848 and 1850. I have checked the Elkhart Co. Cemetery, vols.1-4, Rice Cem. vols.1-2, Violett Cem. book, Oakridge book, and Grace Lawn book, but I can't find anything closer than Jacob HOLDEMAN b. 5 /11/1788 d. 12/14/1867. Is it possible that my wife's Jacob Holderman might have been buried in a family cemetery which might not have been transcribed? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Joseph R. You'll need the complete information from the Elkhart County genweb listing, including the 7-digit LDS reel number, which you can find using the CRIMP/LDS link on the CRIMP page. It costs about $3.50 per reel. When the film comes in, you'll have about a month to look at it, and you can renew if you wish. If you're in Elkhart, you could contact the Elkhart County Genealogy Society, as they have a set of the Elkhart County films at their library in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church on Beardsley. Also, the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis has these films. Happy hunting, Sally K.

In the 1830 Elkhart census is shown the Asa ADAMS family6 consisting of one male child under age 5, one male between ages 20-30 and one female between age 20-30. On the line directly above Asa ADAMS is the John ADAMS family. I suspect that Asa ADAMS is the son of John ADAMS. In the 1840 census for Madison County Indiana is shown the Asa ADAMS family. Does anyone have information on this Asa ADAMS family or the John ADAMS family? Thank you for your help. Perry Adams

Hello All, My mom came from a town in Elkhart named Bristol. My Great great grandfather was Peter BARDO, he came to Bristol in about 1860. His wife was Rebecca GORTNER. They had nine children the ones I know are - William, John, Anna C., and Guy (my ggrandfather) These children were all born in Bristol. Guy married Sadie STRAWSER, They had four children Edith, Elsie, May, and Llyod ( my grandfather). Sadie was born in Bristol, her father was Johnathon STRAWSER, he moved his parents wife and other children to Bristol in about 1860. I don't think the two families had traveled to together or not. Hi! Would someone who has Vol. 4 of the Elkhart Co. Cemeteries, please check for FLOYD BEALS d. 1941 and his wife Florence Beals? I have the cemetery information on Floyd Beals' first wife, Della Moyer Beals (d. 1918 in childbirth with unnamed infant), but would be interested in other Beals who might be in Vol. 4. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks! Joe Joseph R. Murnane 4219 Jersey Rd. Williamson, NY 14589 315-589-6631 JMurnane77@aol.com
Hello List, I was hoping someone could tell me what type of business "Benton and Ramsby" at 110 North Main Street, Goshen, Indiana were in during the late 1940's and early 1950's. I am particularly interested in Ramsby's first name. Hoping to fit that person into our tree. Any tips as to where I might look for this info would be appreciated as well. Thank you, Sincerely, Brigitte Hostetter
Hi Alfred: I have not been able to really pin down Dr. Moses J. Hill's family. There seems to be several HILL families in that NY area at that time who might be his parents. I do know that he came from an educated family, so the fact that your family were teachers and engineers might be a connection. Moses J Hill was a frontier Doctor in the 1830s in Lagrange county Indiana. On the census he showed his birth place as NY and his wife birth in CT. It looks like his wife's name was Betsey. We think that Moses' middle name was Jones. So it is possible his mother or grandmother may have had the maiden name of Jones. He gave one of his sons the middle name of Newell, so that is another possibility for a family name. I have a date of Mose's birth as 30 Jan 1783 in stephentown, NY. The names of his children are: Moses Newell Hill born 24 Jul 1811 NY Slocum Hill about 1812 Marvin Jones Hill 27 Apr 1813 Laura Hill born 28 May 1815 - (Laura married Washington Adams in 1832 in Lagrange County IN.) Hiram H. Hill born 17 Apr 1819 Eliza Hill born 24 Apr 1824. All children were born in NY. I hope that we can find some other researchers who are looking at some of these other children who may help in connecting Moses Jones Hill to his proper parents and ancestors.
