If family members were soldiers, and you know more about the years they lived, you can ask the soldier records in the Hague www.cbg.nl. Important is the "stamboeknummer" from the soldier, but they are helpful to find. The name Looij exists in the Netherlands. Regards, Fred van Veen -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: indonesia-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:indonesia-bounces@rootsweb.com] Namens Mary Young Verzonden: dinsdag 28 augustus 2012 15:49 Aan: indonesia@rootsweb.com Onderwerp: Re: [INDONESIA] INDONESIA Digest, Vol 7, Issue 4 Sorry for the delay in the responses. My cousin went to Indonesia, and went to Jakarta and other places where my grandmother and aunt were born. They also went to where ever the records are kept. They are from Holland and have also been to the Hague and could not find anything to prove that my grandmother was born in Jakarta. I don't think they could even find marriage information. The family story of my grandmother - Elisabeth Lups's mother (I think her name was Elisabeth too) was a servant/slave to a Dutch man by the name of Cornelius Lups who was living in Jakarta. Cornelius was married and had children. His Dutch wife passed away. He ended up either marrying my great grandmother, or just having a child with her. I am not sure, and this was a sort of taboo subject for my grandmother to speak of even when she was more than 80 years old. My great grandmother died, and then later, Cornelius died. My Oma (Elisabeth Lups) was sent to live with her half brother. She was treated as a servant and made to sleep in a courtyard where she said she was bit by rats. She was removed from the home by some sort of social services group. I don't know the particulars after that, but she married a Dutch soldier with the last name of Looy (this is the Americanized version of the name I believe), had my aunt in Jakarta, and then while pregnant, the soldier abandoned her. She married my Opa who was! also a Dutch soldier. They moved back and forth between Holland and Indonesia until my mother was a small baby and they had to flee Indonesia during an uprising. They stayed in Holland until my mother was 14, and then moved to Indiana in the U.S. Family members have gone to Indonesia to try to find documentation of my grandmother's line, and they have searched the records at the Hague. They were trying to get my aunt some sort of settlement funds or something like that. My Oma is deceased and before anything happens to my mother, I would love to be able to get more information, but have never been able to get anyone to help us look. I cannot afford to pay anyone and what is worse is that I do not know the language (either Dutch or Indonesian). I feel like a part of our heritage is missing. I would just like to know how much truth there is to the family story. I would also like to know about her lines and hear what she really went through. Dear Mark (in Menteng), Thank you for your information. Because you are living in Menteng, I have another question for you: I am looking for more information about a cemetery near Menteng. My grandfather Johannes van Veen and grandmother Dina Houtkoop lived in the Palmenlaan (nowadays Jalan Suwiryo called),in the beginning of the 20th century. He was manager at Erdmann & Sielcke in Batavia and she was manager of the shop "Eigen Hulp" in the Molenvliet street. My grandmother Dina Houtkoop died very early at the age of 37 years, in the 20th may of 1920. My grandfather died in Holland in the Second World War. I have some unclear photos from her tombstone, and I am curious in which cemetery she was buried in 1920. Are there cemetery archives in Djakarta? Thank you, Fred van Veen -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: indonesia-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:indonesia-bounces@rootsweb.com] Namens Prisma Verzonden: dinsdag 28 augustus 2012 2:11 Aan: indonesia@rootsweb.com Onderwerp: Re: [INDONESIA] INDONESIA Digest, Vol 7, Issue 3 Regarding the state of archives in Indonesia, the national archives are located in Jakarta, on the island of Java, which was not affected by the 2005 tsunami off Aceh (or subsequent earthquakes and tsunami in Padang and other parts of the island of Sumatra). To my (limited) knowledge, colonial-era records have for the most part been kept only at the national archives; regional government archives are mostly post-Independence (at best). The archives in the Netherlands (some references given below) are more extensive, and, since some of it is on-line, you can even do it from home. In your particular case(s), if there was a birth, (legal) marriage, or death in a Dutch family, there should be some record of that, and it is more likely in the Netherlands than in Indonesia. Sorry for the delay in the responses. > > Hi Mary and Talia, Here are some links to records from Nederlanders who lived in Indonesia. Beside civil records you might try searching newspapers because it was common for people working in Indonesia and other colonies to place advertisements in the National or local papers when someone was born/engaged/married/retired or died. These adverts could have important clues. Dutch citizens still had to register any vital event with the Dutch authorities. If they did, (and yes that did not always happen) you will find them listed in the city where the consulate was. Not necessarily the same city where the people were living. Regarding the state of archives in Indonesia, the national archives are located in Jakarta, on the island of Java, which was not affected by the 2005 tsunami off Aceh (or subsequent earthquakes and tsunami in Padang and other parts of the island of Sumatra). Hi Peter! Thank you for the info! Yes, my grandparents returned to Holland with my infant mother for a few years. While there, they had my aunt also. However, due to the weather in Holland, my mother was a sickly child and the doctors thought if she didn't move somewhere with a warmer climate, she wouldn't see her fifth birthday. So they were sponsored by a church and brought to California to start life anew. My grandfather became a US citizen in 1966. Good morning from Australia I am searching for information on a child that is said to have been born at sea and registered as Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia. His name was ERNEST ALBERT CHESSELL (or one of many variant spellings). Ernest married in Australia in 1885. Parents listed on his marriage certificate are GEORGE CHESSELL and EMILY SANDERS. Can anyone give me ideas how I can confirm if this family was in Indonesia. George was supposedly a seacaptain. Possible that the parents were not married as Ernest changed his families surname to Sanders in 1909. Regards Lyn Baker
*Apologies for Cross/Re-Posting* Hello! Professor Wendy Roth in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia is doing a research study on the social impacts of DNA ancestry testing -- especially whether it has any effect on identities and attitudes. This may have already been posted to this list, as some members of this group have graciously assisted with this study. We are still looking for participants, especially people with any Native American, Black, Hispanic, or Asian roots. We're looking to talk with people with a wide range of experiences to DNA ancestry testing, so we'd be very interested in learning about your experiences regardless of whether the test results had much influence on you or not. If you have taken a DNA ancestry test and would be willing to help with this project, would you fill out a quick online survey at: http://faculty.arts.ubc.ca/wroth/SurveyIntro.html It should only take you about 10-15 minutes. It focuses on why you chose to take the test, your background, your experience with genetic genealogy testing, and how the results may have affected you. You can fill out the survey anonymously, or if you are interested in talking more about these the social impacts of DNA ancestry testing, you can choose to be contacted for a follow-up interview as well. These interviews are done over the phone and are confidential. If you would like to be contacted for a follow-up interview, you can enter your contact information at the end of the survey. But regardless of whether you are interested in the follow-up interview, I hope you will complete the quick online survey. Thank you very much for considering this. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Prof. Wendy Roth at wroth@interchange.ubc.ca or at (604) 822-4845. You can also contact Natasia Wright, Research Assistant on this project, at natasia.social.impacts@gmail.com.
Stephen CERONIO left Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1793. At least that is what is claimed. He supposedly left for Batavia, E.I. - apparently now Jakarta. Now I do see two of his sons in the earliest part of the 1800's in India. One of them, a ship's captain, James CERONIO, traded with Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. In fact, he gave birth illegitimately to two children by Elizabeth BECKFORD, a convict's daughter. She went to India with them, and the children remained there. Elizabeth remarried twice, and died in England. Are there genealogical databases for Indonesia that are readily accessible? I have no money to pursue genealogy, whatsoever, I am afraid to have to admit. Stephen CERONIO was of Italian birth, Giuseppe being his father. Giuseppe was an American sympathizer at the time of the Revolutionary War, and Stephen and Angelo joined the war effort, finishing that in 1784. Stephen returned to Philadelphia, but no one yet knows where Angelo went. Perhaps Mississippi... I am hoping someone can see just *something* that indicates Stephen made it to Indonesia. Thanks, Vince Summers
Hello, Has anyone taken a genetic genealogy test? If you have, would you be willing to help me with a study of genetic genealogy testing? I teach sociology at the University of British Columbia and I'm very interested in the experiences of people who have taken DNA ancestry tests, especially if the results have an effect on people's lives or identities. I'm hosting an online survey – you can complete it anonymously and it should only take about 10-15 minutes. You can complete it here: http://faculty.arts.ubc.ca/wroth/SurveyIntro.html Thank you so much. If you know of other people who've taken genetic genealogy tests, would you also pass this along? Wendy
