    3. Also -- it was possible for some people who could afford it to pay someone else to go in their place. There might be some sort of record of this. One of my relatives (by no means a wealthy man) came into possession of a large chunk of land just before he went to the war. Looking at HIS records (my relative's records) I found that the person who transferred the land to him had paid him to join the Army in his place. So if your relative was a landowner prior to the Civil War, you might check to see if he sold or transferred some or all of his land in that time period and to whom. Just a thought.
