My family line shows a NAME CHANGE from Popejoy to Lovejoy around the late 1800's. Future children born to this family then carried the name LOVEJOY. What I wanted to know was, back then, did they HAVE TO change their name legally or could they just have taken on the name of Lovejoy and passed it down to their decendants? Now days it takes a legal name change to do this. If they DID HAVE TO do a name change legally, where would I find those type of records? Thank you. ..Jeff
