Jeff, Even if you did find the county he was born in, it is unlikely that you will find a birth record or birth certificate. Birth records were kept in the counties, but not required until the early 1900's. The date on the tombstone may originally have said "1888" , but because of time and erosion, it may look like it says "1886". If the other records seem to lean toward the 1888 date, I would go with it, based on propensity of the evidence.
