    3. At the actual NARA location, there is an index of soldiers. The Confederate list is in alphabetical order wtih all soldiers inter-filed. The Union list is broken down by state, then filed alphabetically by soldier's last name. However, when I requested the actual Pension records for my Confederate ancestor, the copies were filed in the STATE he was living in at the time of the request. To make it clearer: he fought for South Carolina in the war, but his records were on file in Arkansas which is the state he was living in when he applied for his pension.
