From the Handy Book for Genealogists, Indiana Territory was organized in 1800. Between 1700 and 1735 the French built Fort Miami, near Fort Wayne; Fort Ouiatenon, on the Wabash River; and Vincennes, on the lower Wabash to protect their trading interests. Only Vincennes became a permanent settlement. In 1763, the area became British, but Indian uprisings made settlement difficult. During the Rev. War Gen. George Rogers Clark, captured Vincennes from the British and helped end the Indian Troubles. With the end of the war, Clarksville, opposite Louisville, Ky. ws settled in 1784.
