Dear Fireflower, Hi, I feel as you do about finding ancestors. I have boxes of stuff that I am organizing the best I can. The stuff that is not proven I am marking so someone someday may try to prove it. For now no one is interested but in my search I have found distant cousins who are interested. I see to it that all of the information I come upon gets out to them and what I have is going into a sort of time capsule. A trunk with zip lock bags and what ever I can find to preserve what I have. One never knows who will enjoy looking through it when I am gone. I remember going to my grandmothers and looking through the things she had about the family. I wish I had gotten her to write more names on or beside pictures. Maybe you can put your sons talent to work on photographing documents and pictures and anything else you have to be put on CD ROMs. Then give a map to where the treasure of info is. A person can make a concrete box fairly easy and hide it in a basement or attic or even buried some where. Maybe I sound a little nutty but I love mystery and I wish that someone would have done some genealogy before me or at least left some notes somewhere as to where they were from. What ever you do don't toss any of it. Some day a grandchild or greatgrandchild or maybe a neice or nephew or distant cousin will love to continue your work. What you are doing is so valuable. the original stuff is especially a treasure. I just know that somewhere in the future someone is going to thank you for all your hard work. Susan in Utah
I have been reading all of the comments about what to do with our notes, etc when we are no longer able to search. I am just glad that I had a grandmother who took the time to get started and document. I have carried it on and now I have an 11 yr old niece who is very much interested in what I am doing. She is constantly asking me what I have learned. She can name pretty much everyone back to her gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather. I know who is going to get my stuff. I am glad that someone is interested in it and it won't go to "waste."
